*Mumbai Crimes Against Senior Citizens Fall 42% But City 2nd After Delhi - Somit Sen | Dec 5, 2023, 08:15 IST. Times of India*

Mumbai: There was a 42% drop in cases of crimes against senior citizens across Mumbai in 2022 compared with the previous year, latest NCRB statistics showed. Mumbai, though, is number 2 after Delhi when it comes to crimes against the elderly among 19 cities.
While Delhi registered 1,313 cases of crimes against senior citizens in 2022, Maharashtra recorded 572. In 2021, the state registered 987 offences. The comparison with previous years also showed a 32% drop compared with cases registered in 2020 (844 cases).
Of the 572 cases registered in 2022, there were five murders of senior citizens in Mumbai, three attempts to commit murder, 84 cases of seniors being hurt, 11 cases of assault on women with the intent to outrage modesty, and 149 theft cases, among other offences. As many as 120 senior citizens were cheated by others and 22 of them filed forgery cases too.

Former state director general of police Praveen Dixit said, “Senior citizens need to be alert and register themselves with local police stations so that cops are aware of their existence in their jurisdiction. Also, elderly persons should form groups of their own with people and neighbours so that they can be in touch with them and alert them in any emergency situation.” He said Mumbai police are regularly in touch with senior citizens in the area, maintaining their data.

*Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings* which has been on the forefront of senior citizen welfare initiatives since 2008, said: “The problem lies mainly with seniors staying alone and those who prefer not to mix with society. When you isolate yourself, you become a soft target.”

Mishra said a significant number of police complaints are against their own family members who harass them for money or property. More than 40% of elders suffer abuse at the hands of family members.
