Future of human augmentation

In early October 2017,108 stroke patients with arm and hand disabilities were put in a peculiar clinical trial. They have surgically implanted a neurostimulator to their vagus nerve, the cranial nerve that runs along the groove in the front of the neck and is responsible for transmitting signals from the brain to other parts of the body. By the time the trial concluded, the subjects’ once limited limbs had begun to come back to life.
The trial was meant as a way of repairing damage and restoring motor control. But what if there had been no damage, to begin with? In the hands of the healthy and fit, such technology could significantly enhance physical performance—the question is whether humans are ready to contend with it.
If that process can be sped up, then we’ve just learned how to optimize the brain—and how to augment human beings. Generally, to acquire a skill, the brain’s neurons need to fire in the right way at the right time; practice is the usual human course, but now, stimulation lets us do it faster, and better, too.

It’s already true that students, athletes, and musicians with better funding have an edge; they can afford the best care, more training hours, better coaches, better facilities. They will be the first to afford new means of optimization as well. Neurostimulation is likely to become the next problematic nexus of social justice and access.
The ethical questions for the future of neurostimulation are not very different from the questions we face concerning current technologies: this breakthrough is exciting, even revolutionary. But we must start planning for its implications now, namely to address who will benefit, and who may be left behind.

BrakTooth Bluetooth vulnerabilities affect billions of devices
A team of security researchers has published details this week about a suite of 16 vulnerabilities that impact the Bluetooth software stack that ships with System-on-Chip (SoC) boards from several popular vendors.
The vulnerabilities allow attackers to crash or freeze devices or, in the worst-case scenarios, execute malicious code and take over entire systems.
The subsequent research found that the same Bluetooth firmware was most likely used inside more than 1,400 chipsets, used as the base for a wide assortment of devices, such as laptops, smartphones, industrial equipment, and many types of smart “Internet of Things” devices.

The severity and impact of the attack vary from device to device. It is based on the device’s underlying SoC board and Bluetooth software stack. The worst thing is the BrakTooth attacks could be carried out with off-the-shelve Bluetooth equipment that costs less than $15.
The research team is set to release a security patch for solving the issue. Since patching has not yet been completed, the research team said they don’t plan to release any of the proof-of-concept code to reproduce BrakTooth attacks but have set up a web form instead where vendors can approach them and request the code to test devices on their own.

T mobile is facing the data breach of the decade...
The mobile service provider is investigating the data breach which has put the data of 100 million users in risk. The anonymous author of a forum post is offering up roughly one-third of the T-mobile USA customer data in exchange for 6 bitcoins ( worth around $280,000). The stolen data, which was reportedly obtained from multiple T-Mobile servers, is filled with identifying information, including names, addresses, and phone numbers; social security numbers; IMEI numbers, which are unique to each mobile device; and driver's license info.
T- mobile is still silent on the account of this issue which puts its entire customer base in a confusion. On the other hand it's entirely possible that the seller is misrepresenting the breach or the contents of the information they claim to be selling.
This puts everyone in a dilemma whether the data we keep secured in our mobile phones is entirely secure?

We are exposed to new offers and advertisements every day, so we find it difficult to determine what’s truly beneficial and what is just a waste of time.
