Mymemories with Dilip Kumar Iwas pretty young when I started watching Dilip Kumar movies. I saw his firstfew films where he played older characters like in Deewar. Deewar was the firstfilm of Yusufsaab that I saw in the theatres.Ammawas an above average fan of Dilip Kumar. She loved Sanjeev Kumar though andJeetendra as well. We would often see Jeetendra at film trials at the Broadway theatreat Dadar TT.Butdad liked Dilip Kumar a lot more, though he was not really a movie buff. Hejust loved the massy dialogues.Anyway,growing up watching Dilip Kumar films and then meeting him time and againwas a pleasure. It was just that back in the day, journalists never took selfieswith the stars. It would often be the helpful and kind photographer who wouldquietly grab some candid momentsMylast two meetings with Dlip Kumar when he was able to communicate happened oncewhen he was part of a TV show produced by Saira Bano. Veteran journalist turnedPR person Peter Martis was the man representing her and he made sure that everyonewas treated well. Mylast interview with Dilip Kumar was when I was at NDTV and Yusufsaab wasspeaking about actress Suraiyya’s death around 20 years ago on January 31,2004. I was working all day on Friday and all night as well and had justreached home at 9 am on Saturday when we got news of Suriayya’s death. I rushedto her home in Marine Drive and then reported and then went off to interview DilipKumar.Oneline that he said was stunning - when I asked him if the industry had a setbackwith her death. “Kisiko dhakka nahin pahuncha hai. People come and go,” he saidand went on to talk about the songstress and actress.
