This dual degree programme will enable students to delve deep into the realm of public policy, international diplomacy and governance.

Renowned educationist and academic administrator Prof. D.P. Singh has been appointed as the Honorable Chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for five years by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

In his illustrious four-decade career, Prof. Singh, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has led several higher education institutions. As UGC Chairman (2018-2021), he has guided 8 inter-university centres of UGC as President of the Governing Council.

He has been Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar; and Devi Ahilya University, Indore. He has also held the post of Director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Prof. Singh has contributed as an ex-officio member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Indian National Commission for Collaboration with UNESCO, Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA); Implementation Committee of National Education Policy-2020; etc.

Prof. Singh has had significant exposure to international programmes and experience handling international projects. He has been instrumental in developing a conducive learning environment, enhancing academic & administrative efficiency, fostering excellence in teaching and research, encouraging global facilitation of higher education and promoting holistic, multidisciplinary, technology-enabled, quality and value-based higher education in India.

Prof. D. P. Singh has been honoured with several awards in the field of education, such as the Environment Leadership Award, Nation Builder Award, Raja Balwant Singh Shiksha Samman, etc.

Prof. Shankar Das was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences on 30 January 2024. Congratulations to Prof. Shankar Das from the entire TISS family.

Prof. Shankar Das is a Public Health and Social Care Educator with 30 years of diverse experience in education, research, and capacity development. He is a committed practitioner and educator who has made scholarly contributions to knowledge-building and set exemplary benchmarks in practice. He has trained and provided human resources development consultancy to health care and social care agencies, hospitals, and community-based rural and urban agencies. Prof. Das has designed, planned, monitored, and evaluated health and social care delivery systems in India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the USA, and the UK. The keystone of his work has always been inclusive development, promotion of indigenous systems of Indian knowledge, equity, and social justice.

Prof. Shankar Das is also Dean of Academic Affairs; Dean of the School of Health Systems Studies; and Project Director of Saksham (a Field Action Project) at TISS.

Congratulations to the School of Social Work (SSW) for winning the 9th FICCI Higher Education Excellence Awards 2023 in the Category Institutional Social Responsibility.

Prof. Vijay Raghavan (Centre for Criminology and Justice, SSW) received the award on behalf of the Dean, SSW, faculty colleagues, students and Field Action Project (FAP) leaders and staff, in a ceremony organised on 29 November 2023, by FICCI as part of the 9th Higher Education Summit held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.

According to the FICCI website, “Winning a FICCI Higher Education Excellence Award signifies an institution's unwavering commitment to excellence and establishes them as a benchmark for quality education. It serves as a testament to their dedication, leadership, and collaboration with industry partners, demonstrating their ability to deliver exceptional education and create a positive societal impact.”

The SSW would like to thank our Ph.D. scholar Ms. Sharli Mudaliyar for her hard work and diligence to collate and compile the information and help with the application process while applying for the award.

Prof. Shalini Bharat concluded her tenure as the Vice-Chancellor/Director of TISS on 25 September 2023. Prof. Bharat's remarkable service to TISS began in 1984, when she joined as Lecturer.

We are grateful for her unwavering dedication, commitment, and exemplary integrity throughout her tenure. Prof. Bharat's contributions have left an indelible mark on our TISS community, and we extend our warmest wishes to her as she embarks on a well-deserved retirement journey.

Making a difference since 1936... 😀

Congratulations to Meera P.R. for securing an All India Rank of 160 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2022.

It gives us great joy and pride to share the news that our alum, Meera P.R. (Batch of 2017-2019, M.A. Social Work in Community Organisation and Development Practice, ), secured an All India Rank of 160 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2022.

In an email sent to us, this is what Meera had to say:

"I was born and brought up in Kochi, Kerala. After schooling in Kochi, I moved to Mumbai for my B.A. in Economics from St. Xavier's College. I then pursued the LAMP (Legislative Assistant to Member of Parliament) Fellowship in New Delhi, where I provided research support for a Rajya Sabha MP for a year. After this Fellowship, I joined to pursue an M.A. Social Work in Community Organisation and Development Practices. I was placed with Reliance Foundation through the TISS Placement cell and worked with them for around 1.5 years. Post that, I also worked with NITI Aayog in their Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office as a Young Professional before quitting my job to prepare full-time for UPSC Civil Services.

My optional subject was Sociology (which I could prepare independently because of the strong academic foundation I received during my time at TISS). My fieldwork at TISS was a turning point in my life, an eye-opener which prompted me to choose a career in public service."

The 10th Convocation of the TISS Guwahati Off-Campus will be held on Friday, 23 June 2023, at 3.30 pm IST. In this Convocation, 153 students - including 112 Master's and 41 Bachelor's - will receive their degrees.

Chief Guest, Prof. Manorama Sharma (Retd. Professor, Dept. of History, North-Eastern Hill University; and Academic Adviser, Assam Institute of Mass Communication & Media Research, Guwahati), will grace the occasion and deliver the Convocation Address.

Prof. Shalini Bharat (Director, TISS) will preside over the Convocation ceremony, which will be held at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, NH 37, Bethkuchi Adjacent to ISBT and Balaji Temple, Guwahati.

We are delighted to share that our alum, Bhatta Ram (Batch of 2018-2020), has been selected to receive the Rotary Foundation Scholarship to pursue an M.Sc. in Water and Sustainable Development at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Netherlands. Bhatta Ram did his M.A. in Water Policy and Governance (School of Habitat Studies - Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai) and was also the President of the TISS Students’ Union 2019.

In an email sent to us, Bhatta Ram said:

“The Rotary Scholarship is a prestigious award recognising students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to serving their communities. Through this programme, I am grateful for the opportunity to further my education and develop my skills as a global citizen. iCALL, a field action project of the School of Human Ecology, TISS Mumbai, offers free telephone and email-based counselling services, to individuals in emotional and psychological distress across age, language, gender, sexual orientation and issues, through a team of qualified and trained mental health professionals.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has been ranked between 201-250 in the 13th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject: Sociology.

The QS rankings offer a comparative analysis of more than 15,700 individual programmes at 1594 universities across 93 countries in 54 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas.

Congratulations to Ms. Samridhi Bhardwaj (First Year student of the Centre for Community Organisation and Development Practice, School of Social Work) of for being awarded the First Position in the Mayor’s Speech Competition at “Prajantra: National Youth Festival 2022-23”. The event was held on the 13 and 14 of March 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Samridhi spoke as the Mayor of Guwahati and shared her vision and practical plans for the city after she underwent a Q&A round with the judges.

Some memories from the recently concluded 82nd Annual Convocation at TISS Mumbai.

Tomorrow is the 82nd Annual Convocation Day, where the 2022 graduating batch of students from TISS Mumbai and TISS Tuljapur will get their degrees.

The 82nd Annual Convocation of TISS will be held on Saturday, 11 February 2023 over two sessions at the Convention Centre of its Naoroji Campus, TISS Mumbai.

Session One: 11:00 am

Waterman of India, Shri Rajendra Singh, Water Conservationist, Environmentalist, and Winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award, will deliver the Convocation Address.

Session Two: 3:00 pm

Dr. Satish Pradhan, Former Group Head of HR, Tata Group, will deliver the Convocation Address.

Prof. Shalini Bharat (Director, TISS) will preside over the Convocation which will see 1161 students and scholars of the Batch of 2022 from TISS Mumbai and TISS Tuljapur receiving their Bachelor's, Master's, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, TISS Mumbai, hosted an interactive session with 20 graduate students of the Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Management programme from Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Spain, on 8 February 2023.

The students, along with three Professors from Mondragon University, interacted with the Faculty and students of M.A. in Social Entrepreneurship (MASE) programme at the School of Management and Labour Studies. The purpose of the session was to understand and learn from each other's learning experiences.

In his briefing, Prof. Adrián Martínez Pacín (Mondragon University) shared that their students needed to set up ventures as part of an experiential learning programme called Entrepreneurship Lab. This interactive session would help the students gain practical insights from the field.

The Mondragon University students talked about their experience of starting their ventures as part of the graduate programme, while the MASE students shared their learning experiences. The TISS team also gave a brief presentation of the programme design of MASE.
