Measles is a viral infection mainly seen in young children and infants. Apart from the generalized redness and rash on the whole body, fever, cough and cold are the main symptoms. The infection is contagious and will spread to unvaccinated close contacts. The illness can get complicated and rarely lead to death, especially in non vaccinated children and those with low immunity.

In view of the recent outbreak of Measles in Mumbai, all children whose vaccine for 9 months and 16-18 months is due need to take it as soon as possible.
Treatment of measles remains symptomatic and no specific drugs are available to treat it. It can only be prevented by timely vaccination.
So catch up on your child's vaccination as soon as possible and always try to stick to the given schedule.

Acute diarrhea is one of the commonest infections in children in India. The standard treatment almost always includes Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).
ORS is a magical treatment that has saved millions of lives in developing nations and it deserves all the praise it can get.

This post is about one warning that many people may not be aware of.

NEVER USE COPPER VESSELS TO RECONSTITUTE OR STORE ORS WATER.

Most of our older generation people know that Copper reacts with anything citrus in nature and hence they never serve or store sour or acidic foods in copper vessels, like lemon, pickles, citrus juices, etc.
ORS also contains Sodium citrate which reacts with Copper and causes copper poisoning. The early symptoms of this can be abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting.
If this happens inadvertently please discard the solution, drink a lot of clean drinking water from steel or glass containers to flush out the toxins and consult your nearest doctor.
Always read instructions on medicine packaging before use and follow them thoroughly.
