It also sought to answer questions about the optimal mix of and , the realistic potential of India's mission, the performance of various states in mechanisms such as intra/inter-state charges, , , and , and the viability of green open access.
With India being the third-largest carbon emitter globally, fossil fuels are likely to continue their prevalence. As a result, achieving is of utmost importance and will require the deployment of and technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) particularly in hard-to-abate sectors to achieve by 2070. This journey towards net-zero ambitions demands robust policies and market certainties, essential for securing the financing needed to deploy CCUS supply chains and commercial infrastructure.
NITI Aayog is at the forefront of shaping this transformative landscape, spearheading the development of a comprehensive policy framework and financing support mechanism for CCUS in India. Idam Infrastructure Advisory Pvt. Ltd., under the aegis of NITI Aayog and The World Bank, had the wonderful opportunity to organise a dynamic roundtable on the 'Role of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) Technology in Meeting Net Zero' on October 12, 2023, at Daniell’s Tavern, The Imperial Hotel, New Delhi.

As the world’s third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, has pledged to achieve carbon emissions by 2070. The electricity sector is at the forefront of initiatives and (DERs) are expected to play a key role in enabling the country to eventually transition away from power generation (especially coal). DERs can not only raise the and of the power sector but they can also help in meeting the country’s electricity demand from sustainable sources in a reliable manner, especially for the unelectrified rural population. Using these resources can reduce the from fossil generation that is used to meet peaks in , thus increasing the system resilience and benefitting all consumers through lower prices resulting from avoided generation and costs. Among the many with varying degrees of maturity that are currently being deployed in India, , batteries, (including ), , and micro and mini grids are expected to grow significantly in the coming years due to a range of policy and market-driven incentives.
To facilitate the large scale deployment of DERs through policy and regulatory actions, a virtual roundtable/webinar on 'Market Dialogue on DER Policy Support in India' was jointly organised by Idam Infrastructure Advisory Pvt. Ltd. and Regulatory Assistance Project. The objective of this webinar was to bring together important stakeholders in the community on one platform to identify the most immediate challenges to the adoption of DERs in India and discuss solutions which could be effective in dealing with those challenges.

During , India declared its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. To fulfill this goal, it is imperative to implement both zero carbon and negative carbon technologies to support India's transition to a sustainable and future. Recognizing that fossil fuels will continue to be a part of the energy landscape, achieving carbon neutrality will necessitate the deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies. CCUS plays a crucial role in reducing CO2 emissions, especially in those sectors in which emission reduction is challenging, by capturing emissions at their source. The development of robust policies is essential to secure the necessary funding and market stability for CCUS deployment, supply chain, infrastructure development, and, ultimately, private sector investments in CCUS technologies.
In view of this, a Roundtable Discussion on the 'Role of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Technology in Meeting Net Zero in India' was jointly organized by The World Bank, NITI Aayog, and Idam Infrastructure Advisory Pvt. Ltd.
Dr. VK Saraswat, a member of NITI Aayog, chaired the roundtable discussion which oversaw participation from a diverse set of organisations such as Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Earth Sciences , Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Central Electricity Authority (Cea) and research institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and corporate companies such as Oil India Limited, NTPC Limited, Reliance Industries Limited, Dalmia Bharat Group, among others.
