According to Atlas 2023, Half the Global Population will be living with Obesity if prevention, treatment and support don’t improve.

Obesity is associated with significant long-term conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and several types of cancers, implicating the need to address it as an essential risk factor for the most common chronic conditions.

All India Association of Advancing Research in Obesity organised a three-day Conference, “Obesity India 2023,” from December 1st to 3rd in Nagpur.

It was an honour to share insights on the Low Carb vs Low Fat diet debate for weight loss as a faculty speaker at the international conference. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the discussion on healthy living.

Heartiest Congratulations Sunil Gupta Sir Kavita Gupta Ma’am and the entire organising team for the success of transformative conference on obesity, where experts converge to address this global health challenge. Engaging in discussions on multifaceted approaches, from lifestyle interventions to medical advancements.

Macro- Role of Micronutrients

Did you know
Epidemiological and Scientific Studies suggest every third person is affected by "Hidden Hunger."

Hidden Hunger, unlike Protein Energy Malnutrition, represents hunger as the Malnutrition of Micronutrients.

Micronutrients are those nutrients that are required in small amounts but are vital to healthy development, disease prevention, and well-being.

UNICEF observed, " Hidden Hunger does not produce hunger as we know it. You might not feel it in the belly, but it strikes at the core of your health & vitality.”

Why are nutrients that are needed in trace elements so essential? Why is it important to have the micronutrients in a balanced concentration?

We are aware that our bodies are made up of organs, which in turn are made of tissues and cells. These microscopic entities carry out the metabolic activities that get our body going.

In all metabolic activities, enzymes are a must, and what drives these enzymes are the co-factors. These cofactors are vitamins and minerals without which the enzymes cannot function, slowing the entire metabolism.

Our brain, nerves, blood, skin, bone, and everything depends on vital micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. These micro-molecules are essential for reducing the risk of diseases and adequately functioning and proliferation of dividing cells in the body.

Vitamins and minerals are involved in every biochemical process in the human body.

The micronutrients are crucial to keeping our body functioning well, like the air we breathe and a good night's sleep.

They are altogether more essential to relieve PMS Symptoms.

Sugar is noteworthy as a substance that releases opioids and dopamine and thus might be expected to have addictive potential.

The evidence supports the hypothesis that under certain circumstances rats can become sugar dependent.

This may translate to some human conditions as suggested by the literature on eating disorders and obesity.

Last 2 posts talked about obesity caused due to added sugar and how it is associated to cancer but there is yet another study which tells the relation of Diet high in sugar being associated to cancer irrespective of weight, so next time you drink that Redbull or that can of coke or for that matter any juice in tetra pack, remember this, they are not just empty calories but... !

Obesity is linked to nearly more than 13 different cancers. The reason for this is the increased body fat that promotes inflammation, which over time damages the DNA and leads to cancer.

“You will be hungry again in an hour”

Sugar provide large amount of “empty calories (calories with little or no nutritional value). If you eat these foods in excess, your body will quickly turn them into body fat leading to obesity which in turn decreases your insulin effectiveness and so most of the carbs wreak havoc on your natural hormone levels.

Insulin production goes haywire as the body attempts to process huge amounts of starches and simple sugars contained in a typical “Bad- Carb” based meal. This leads to dramatic fluctuations in blood glucose levels- a big reason why you often feel lethargic after eating high-carb meals. Since it’s low in protein and fibre, it offers LOW SATIETY VALUE, MAKING YOU HUNGRY !

Does this happen to you ?

Did you know ?

The pastries and the chocolate cakes, the soft drinks and all other hot sugar foods give sudden peaks and troughs in the amount of glucose in your blood; symptoms that this is going on include fatigue, irritability, dizziness, insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and forgetfulness, excessive thirst, depression and crying spells, digestive disturbances and blurred vision. Since the brain depends on an even supply of glucose it is no surprise to find that sugar has been implicated in aggressive behavior, anxiety, and depression, and fatigue.

In fact, a study of 3,456 middle-aged civil servants, published in British Journal of Psychiatry found that those who had a diet which contained a lot of processed foods had a 58% increased risk for depression, whereas those whose diet could be described as containing more whole foods had a 26% reduced risk for depression.

Are you wanting to get rid of those acne ?

Do you know the culprit?

Yes the comfort foods that you turn to on your weekends or the festive times, the chocolates, those hot-chocolates, the ice-creams, the soft-drinks etc

The researchers examined data on more than 6,700 participants with acne across North America, South America, and Europe. They found a significant association of acne with daily consumption of sweet beverages like soda or juices and eating foods like pastries and chocolate."

It is rightly said that “Abs are made in kitchen” and here is why you are not able to see those abs or you are not able to tone your abs even after doing those crunches and other core- burn exercises👇🏼

Added sugars are often referred to as empty calories, as they’re relatively high in calories yet void of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and fiber, which your body needs to function optimally (PubMed Central)

Daily consumption of large amounts of added sugar can lead to chronically elevated blood sugar levels. Prolonged elevated blood sugar — known as hyperglycemia — can cause serious harm to your body, including weight gain.
(PubMed Central)

Eating foods rich in carbs — particularly refined carbs high in added sugars — yet low in protein can negatively impact fullness and may lead to weight gain by causing you to eat more at subsequent meals throughout the day.

Few days back, I was talking to a friend, he told me about his daily routine, a sugar-free energy bar is his evening snack, I told him to share the nutrition label of his bar and here it is !

You can see it’s not sugar free, the facts say that it has 5.5g sugar, also if you give a closer look to the ingredients, it has Dates, Brown Sugar and Honey as well !

One more thing which I always say, “Sugar- free doesn’t mean Fat- free, this bar has 14.1g fat.”

Read the nutrition label carefully !

Following are some of the recognised important health related foes associated with higher dietary sugar intake:

1)Suppression of immune system

2)Defence against bacterial infection- By
impairing functions of WBCs is impaired

3)Disturbed mineral and vitamin balance in the body

4)Chromium deficiency

5)Disturbs role of calcium, magnesium in body

6)Macular degeneration of eyes

7)Ageing- Sugar molecules enter into the blood along with proteins and produce some harmful molecules, AGEs (Advanced glycogen end products) which damage elastin and collagen, making the skin fragile and affect its firmness. AGEs also neutralise the anti-oxidative enzymes protecting the skin from harmful sunrays and ultimately our skin ages
