Reading Keeda's "Pitara" :
Wish you all a very happy Eid!
To celebrate this merry occasion with you, Reading Keeda Pitara brings forth to you "Ismat's Eid." An adaptation of a delightful Turkish tale, this is a story by Fawzia Gilani-Williams, vividly illustrated by Proiti Roy and is published by Tulika Books.
The story starts with Ismat, a shoemaker, who goes to buy gifts for his family on the occasion of Eid. While doing that, he is persuaded by the shopkeeper to buy a gift for himself, too.
The story follows Ismat and his family and the love and care a family holds for each other. All this comes with a dose of laughter and, most importantly, with an example of being able to laugh at oneself.
A read recommended for read aloud, story-telling, for children as well as adults for all ages by us 🌼
==============================================
Reading Keeda "Pitara" is an attempt to put the spotlight on picture books that are a portal to myriad worlds of diversity, inclusion, racism, sexuality, gender identity, and gender equality.
We celebrated Hindi Diwas with an online Hindi story-telling session by for the children of .nl , Amsterdam.
Rajeshwari Deo from narrated a beautiful story "सपनों के पंख - छोटी सी आशा" by . This was followed by a finger puppet making activity at the .nl centre.
📚💫 READING KEEDA RECOMMENDS :
"The One and Only Ivan" is a story of friendship between Ivan, a silverback gorilla, and Stella, an adult elephant and Ruby, a baby elephant. It is also the story of the unique bond that Ivan shares with a stray dog, Bob, and Julia, a young girl.
Ivan lives at Exit 8 Big Top Mall by the Video Arcade. He has stayed there in captivity for 9855 days. Ivan is also an artist who likes to draw and paint. His artworks are sold at the mall's gift shop.
Because of an incident, Ivan now needs to fulfill a promise he made a friend, even though he didn't know how he would when he made that promise.
This is a story told by Ivan about his life, how he spends his days and what he sees and thinks about the events, people, and animals that surround him. A 2012 novel written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao, "The One and Only Ivan" was named the winner of the Newbery Medal in 2013.
This is a beautiful book on friendship - a friendship that spans age, language, and species, a friendship that sustains captivity, thrives in it, and overcomes it.
Suitable for age 10+ or middle grade readers and above.

This year, Reading Keeda Library celebrated World Literacy Day with Pratham Books "One Day, One Story" campaign.
We took story-telling and read-aloud sessions with the book "हैलो सूरज", written and illustrated by Rajiv Eipe and translated in Hindi by Shashi Sablok. The sessions happened at 3 different locations, spanning Nagpur and Gurugram, during which we engaged with different children from different backgrounds and communities using the story and various games and activities.
We started with our Swap It 2.0 program, a book exchange initiative, in this May with 14 participants. Today was the first time some of us met online to discuss how the program is going for them. We ended the session with an interesting game of "21 Questions," where the participants had to guess book names off each other's minds.
Members participating in our July "Readers' Circle" had a great time exploring non-fiction tools like atlas, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. As the session progressed, we went on with our discussions around the books that the members had read in the last one month, telling stories that they could remember and making figurines out of clay.
Today (July 29) is celebrated world over as the International Tiger Day in a bid to raise awareness on various issues surrounding tiger conservation.
The tiger enjoys the reputation of being the largest of the world's big cats. Despite known for his ferociousness, the tiger finds its place in a lot of children's books as a beloved, gentle and protective character.

This month’s Reader’s Circle activity was based on a special theme- Mother’s Day!!
Starting the conversation was the idea of how children feel about their mothers.🌻
We asked the children to think of any instance involving their mother in which she did something wonderful for them, but they failed to express their gratitude. 🌻
Children were taken down memory lane and brought back fond memories of numerous activities they had done together.🌻
They each selected one occurrence from the book that best exemplified the mother's distinctive role in the story. Children made beautiful greeting cards for their mothers.🌻
Sharing all of these activities with the group had a really positive impact on the children.🌿🌿

Reader's Circle!!🌟
We would love to share that on 23rd April we conducted our monthly activity Reader's Circle!!
In Reader’s Circle, we combine the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a natural way. This helps to motivate children to read comprehensively and build their perspective on the subject.🤗
On the occasion of World Book Day, we told children to pick a book from our library that they loved most and wish, their friends could read. They had to choose two books in English and another one from either Marathi or Hindi. After this, they expressed their thoughts on why others must have to read these books. 👥
We also did a drawing-painting activity on the theme of World Book Day, where children brought very beautiful pictures of books using their imagination. 😇🥳
Let's Hear a Story with Rajeshwari ! 😇
On the 16th of April, Reading Keeda organized a storytelling session in collaboration with . 15 children participated in this program. Kids were enthralled not just by a fantastic story telling but also with some fun activities!
🌟
In the first activity, children identified and counted the animals in the image.
In the second activity, kids made their favorite animal using the paper. They sang songs, recited poems, and presented their story enthusiastically. Everyone gave their best while doing the activities 💙
Mrs. Rajeshwari Deo Deshpande is the founder of Katha Kingdom Org. Through her work, she aims to spread the magic of stories amongst all. 🤗

'Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability' is a graphic biography on the experiences of caste discrimination and resistance that Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar recorded in his autobiographical illustrations. The Bhimayana provides critical insight into the negligence and caste-ridden mind of the Indian society towards the architect of the Indian constitution.
Navayana Press has a fine reputation in India for publishing books about gritty subjects with a particular focus on social injustice. Artists Durgabai and Subhash Vyam are highly accomplished Gond painters. They are tribal peoples from villages deep in central India. They worked closely with authors Srividya Natarajan and S. Anand to convey the biography of untouchability's most important spokesperson, Bhimarao Ramji Ambedkar. The story itself compelling interweaves profound anecdotes from Ambedkar's entire life with potent reports of contemporary abuses reported throughout India.
The highly imaginative drawings combine successfully with frequently shocking messages to create a masterpiece that enchants the reader and succeeds in conveying valuable information that is often lost elsewhere in rhetoric and hyperbole. This book is a must for any socially conscious Indian.
Book club helps us to discover new worlds. There's nothing better than reading a great book and then calling up a friend to discuss it. Book clubs are just like that, but with more friends. Teens also have their own book clubs, too. Starting them early will set them up for a lifetime of reading, self-discovery, and connection. The Reading Keeda organized Teens Book Club on 26’th March. We were pleased to punch by seeing participants from Nagpur, Amravati, Thane, Kalyan, and also from Panaji!
Book discussions were followed by an activity of Blackout Poetry where participants created poetry out of their favorite prose excerpts.
Art and library special connection!!
Art and creativity have often been thought of as Wonderland, a subject to find a collection of ideas and a vault for the imagination. Art is a space for communication, connection, and creation. This leads us to explore the infinitely obvious topic of art, and creativity in the Reading Keeda library through a series of workshops with Bookworm Trust, Goa.
So as an initial kickstart, our library coordinators Mugdha Pathradkar and Sh*tal Raut facilitated the ' Visual Arts Series' session. Children made art on comic strip making. It was so a fascinating experience to see children making their own stories around spaceships, food, and waste disposal also! Children were thrilled to put their imagination on paper. Children of age 7 to 11 Participated and enjoyed the process. We were glad to share their stories in comic form and even appreciated each other's ideas and representation.
The Theme of the Week is Books by Tulika Publications..! 😊
Do drop by the library to browse through our collection of Tulika Books!💙
Tulika’s imaginatively created children’s books pioneered a fresh
wave in Indian publishing in 1996. An independent publishing house
based in Chennai, their focus is on picture books for children in
English and other Indian languages - Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali for the most part and sometimes others too - so that more children can access books in a language familiar to them.🌻
They offer a range of experiences that are inclusive and representative: of different childhoods, of different social milieus, and of different cultural contexts.
The visual language too is diverse, with the traditional alongside the contemporary. Tulika’s books are for all children, anywhere, and speak in many voices. ☀️
"Readers' Circle" is a monthly initiative by Reading Keeda Library, open for all children between ages 9 to 12. an activity we are introducing every month 💙
We conducted our 1st Readers' Circle in the month of Jan. We saw our participants enthusiastically discussing books they last read and what they liked the most in them. Alongwith this, we saw some brilliant ice-breakers and team-building games to build rapport among our participants.
Thanks to for helping us plan and execute this lovely initiative 🌼
If you would like to be part of these meets, please drop us a DM!

There's so much more we need to learn and unlearn about children. Every interaction with them teaches us so much about the fascinating way a child's mind works. Every time we are amazed by both the innocence and profoundness of their words and actions.
Reminding ourselves who are at the core of everything that we do and wishing everyone a very Happy Children's Day!

Mental health is health. That's it. Nothing more, and definitely nothing less.
And it requires as intimate and regular a care like which comes to our physical health by brushing our teeth daily, bathing daily, wearing fresh, clean clothes etc.
How do you talk to children about mental health? By talking about inclusion, acceptance, diversity and tolerance.Children should not only understand to be kind to others but also to themselves.
And hence, on this World Mental Health Day, the Theme of the Week in the library is books which directly or indirectly talk and touch upon the nuances of mental health.

At Reading Keeda Library, we strongly believe that libraries play a very important role in propelling literacy forward.
They provide a platform and also resources for individuals to read and learn about varied aspects of our world, ranging from literature to science and many other topics. Several provide books to those who may not be able to receive a formal education or cannot afford to buy and read books.
Thus, libraries help on a pivotal point - accessibility. People from all walks of life can benefit from this.
All that we work on at Reading Keeda is aimed towards this - making our library and books easily accessible to those who wish to grow their "literacy", in all senses. Wish you all a very happy International Literacy Day!
