'Why not again' was the on-loop mental soundtrack playing on Lasith Malinga's head each time he stood atop his bowling run-up during his four of four-phase. When the fast, dipping yorker still capable of such devastation, why veer away from it for another batsman. Hamish Rutherford, the 11th-hour replacement in an injury-riddled New Zealand squad probably knew what to expect given Malinga was into his 15th year in international cricket. But nothing, not even the sight of Colin Munro's re-arranged stumps, prepared him for what was to come.
Rutherford wore the yorker on his pads and had the misfortune of watching the Malinga theatre on the giant screen as he waited for the three while waiting for three reds to officially send him on his way. Malinga, who half-appealed, half-celebrated and later called for an immediate review, had seen the wicket coming from his bowling run-up.
"After taking the first wicket, the newcomer [Rutherford] was an inexperienced left-hander. I thought of getting him out in the first ball. My best weapon is the inswinging yorker, so I thought of using that and he got out," he would say later, before elaborating how the same strategy also worked for batsmen on the other end of the experience and form spectrum - Ross Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme.
"Then came de Grandhome and Taylor. These two guys have been a real headache for us throughout the series. The other bowlers failed to get them in the other match. I was thinking about how to get these two guys, and I knew we could win the game if we get them. I thought that if I could bowl two yorkers, then why not the third? So I got back to the mental preparation that I do before I bowl a yorker and walked back to my run-up.
"The timing and accuracy were there and I got the third wicket. When I got the third, I was thinking again: 'Why not try it a fourth time?' It was all the same preparation again and I did it."
And he had. More than 12 years after he shook the cricketing world with a dramatic four-wicket burst against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup, Malinga had repeated his magic feat at a ripe age of 36 - at a time when fast bowlers begin dreaming about life on a hammock by the beach. Malinga's burst ensured Sri Lanka defended what was a paltry score of 125 to walk away with a consolation victory in the T20I series.
"I always come to every match thinking I can turn the game around," Malinga said after the match. The skill that I have in taking wickets, considering the experience, is more than any other player on the field. I don't care who believes that or not, but I believe that. So I want to control the game as soon as I get the ball in hand," the veteran fast bowler said.
Enroute his fifth hat-trick in international cricket, Malinga also became the first male cricketer to pick 100 T20I wickets, a feat he didn't dwell on for too long in his post-game debrief. He did, however, hope that his Pallekele exploits would fuel his own teammates' aspirations to achieve similar levels of excellence.
"It's just another achievement for me. It happened today and it's history now, but if I was hit badly tomorrow, these four wickets and the other achievements are all forgotten," he said. "But then, I am really happy that I could take four wickets in four balls in T20s as well because I am playing in the latter part of my career.
"All the younger players who played with me could see it with their own eyes. I think that could have been an inspiration to them and maybe they also think that they can do something like this. That's what an up-and-coming player needs - to see something happen, and train towards that."
BCCI cuts short Sreesanth's ban; to end in September 2020 ...
BCCI ombudsman DK Jain has ordered for S Sreesanth's spot-fixing ban to be reduced to a seven-year suspension, meaning the fast bowler will be eligible to play from September 2020. Jain's order comes months after the Supreme Court had set aside Sreesanth's life ban in March this year, asking the BCCI to consider a fresh punishment for the former India pacer, who already has served six years away from the game.
In an order passed by Jain on August 7, the BCCI ombudsman has argued that Sreesanth's heydays as a fast bowler "may already be over" and that the "ends of justice" would be met if he's allowed to play next year.
"... I am of the view that banning Mr. Sreesanth from participating in any kind of commercial Cricket or from associating with any activities of the BCCI or its affiliates, for a period of seven years with effect from 13.09.2013, i.e. the date from which, the period of ban imposed by the Disciplinary Committee had commenced, will meet the ends of justice," Jain said in the order.
In March this year, while the BCCI had argued that the ban imposed on Sreesanth was "fully sustainable in law", Salman Khurshid, the cricketer's lawyer, told the two-member bench - comprising of Justices Ashoka Bhushan and KM Joseph - that the only fault the pacer had committed was to not disclose the wrongdoings to the board.
"Life ban given to Mohammed Azharuddin (former India captain) was overturned. Pakistan's Salim Malik got a life ban but it was overturned. Hansie Cronje was given life ban but he died in a plane crash when proceedings were not closed," Khurshid had argued. "If at all he is guilty of anything, it is for failure to disclose about fixing, etc, despite having knowledge. That will make him guilty only of the least punishable offense. There is nothing on record to warrant a lifetime ban."
The Supreme Court's directive to BCCI's disciplinary committee was what cleared the decks for Sreesanth's return. The last he played for India was in 2011, with his last appearance in IPL coming in 2013.

Brendon McCullum named KKR head coach !!!
by Cric Talk • Published on Thu, 15 Aug, 9:45 PM
Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. This follows the exit of Jacques Kallis, who had served in that capacity since October 2015.
McCullum had two stints as a player with KKR in the Indian Premier League, between 2008 and 2010 and then again for the 2012-13 seasons. His association with the franchise goes beyond as well, having played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League.
"It's a great honour to take on this responsibility," said McCullum, who recently announced his retirement as a player. The Knight Rider franchises in IPL & CPL have become iconic and have set the standard in franchise cricket. We have fantastic squads in both KKR & TKR and me along with the support staff will be looking to build on the successes both franchises have enjoyed," he added.
KKR has also severed ties with Simon Katich who was the assistant coach but a replacement for him is yet to be named.

Nigeria, Namibia replace suspended Zimbabwe in World T20 qualifiers !!
Zimbabwe's loss is Nigeria's gain in the upcoming Men's World T20 qualifier in October in UAE. The side that finished third in the Africa Men's Final will now be the 14th team in the qualifier in place of Zimbabwe who was recently suspended by the ICC. Inclusion of Nigeria maintains the regional representation for the World T20 qualifier as they will be the third team from Africa in the tournament - alongside Kenya and Namibia.
The event in UAE will also include hosts UAE, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jersey, Kenya, Namibia, Netherlands, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Singapore and two teams from the Americas Final, scheduled to take player later this month.
In the Women's game, Namibia gets a late entry into the qualifier at the behest of Zimbabwe. The event in Scotland will now have Namibia jostle it out with the hosts, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Papa New Guinea, Thailand and USA for two vacant spots in the tournament proper, to be held in 2020.
Umpire S Ravi no longer part of ICC Elite Panel
Indian umpire Sundaram Ravi has been left out of the ICC's Elite Panel of Umpires for 2019-20, which now has two new additions in England's Michael Gough and Joel Wilson from West Indies.
Gough and Wilson, who were previously part of the ICC's International Panel of Umpires, received a promotion to the Elite Panel by a selection committee consisting of ICC General Manager - Cricket, Geoff Allardice (Chairman), former player and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, and match referees Ranjan Madugalle and David Boon.
Two spots became available in the Elite Panel following the retirement of umpire Ian Gould and the removal of Ravi, for which no specific reason was given by the ICC apart from Adrian Griffith, the ICC Senior Manager, Umpires and Referees, stating that an elite official's job is "extremely challenging" and that each match official is subject to a rigorous ongoing performance assessments throughout the year.
Speaking about the latest additions, Griffith said: "We are fortunate to have some fantastic officials who are able to withstand the pressures of the job and deliver consistently on the international stage. Michael and Joel are deserving additions to the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Umpires and I wish them all the best for the coming season and for the future."
Both Gough and Wilson are experienced umpires at the international level. Gough, a former Durham batsman, has officiated in nine Tests, 59 ODIs and 14 T20Is while Wilson has stood in 13 Tests, 63 ODIs and 26 T20Is.
Gough and Wilson will now join the Panel that has Aleem Dar, Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Bruce Oxenford, Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker.
Meanwhile, the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees is unchanged, with David Boon, Chris Broad, Jeff Crowe, Ranjan Madugalle, Andy Pycroft, Richie Richardson and Javagal Srinath being the seven officials.
