Solar competitors band together to help bring electricity to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico

Solar companies are banding together to help restore electricity to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico as 90 percent of the island's 3.5 million residents remain without power.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a solar entrepreneur better known for his work on electric vehicles and spacecraft, has also jumped into the fray, posting a message to his Twitter account Oct. 5 saying it would be feasible for Tesla to rebuild Puerto Rico's electric grid.

Solar supplies such as roofing, generators and tent shelters worth about $2 million are expected to arrive in the territory in the coming weeks.
"Everything is needed down there, but we are trying to help out in a unique way," said Brad Creer, president of New Star Solar.

Advanced silicon solar cells: Detecting defects that reduce efficiency:-
As the world transitions to a low-carbon energy future, near-term, large-scale deployment of solar power will be critical to mitigating climate change by midcentury. Climate scientists estimate that the world will need 10 terawatts (TW) or more of solar power by 2030—at least 50 times the level deployed today

MIT research is shedding light on why some (but not all) photovoltaic modules containing a new type of high-efficiency silicon solar cell generate significantly less electricity after they’ve been in sunlight for just a few months. Based on studies using specialized equipment and analytical techniques, the researchers hypothesize that defects in the silicon are causing electrons that have been energized by incoming sunlight to lose their extra energy—before they can travel through external wires as current. They recommend that manufacturers fabricating these solar cells use the lowest firing temperatures they can and ensure that their silicon has low concentrations of certain impurities that the MIT team has identified as potentially contributing to the problem. The researchers hope that their final explanation of this fault and how to solve it will help encourage the rapid deployment of these promising high-efficiency solar cells.

Transparent, flexible solar cells combine organic materials, graphene electrodes.

Imagine a future in which solar cells are all around us—on windows and walls, cell phones, laptops, and more. A new flexible, transparent solar cell developed at MIT brings that future one step closer.
The device combines low-cost organic (carbon-containing) materials with electrodes of graphene, a flexible, transparent material made from inexpensive, abundant carbon sources. This advance in solar technology was enabled by a novel method of moving a one-atom-thick layer of graphene onto the solar cell—without damaging nearby sensitive organic materials.
Until now, developers of transparent solar cells have typically relied on expensive, brittle electrodes that tend to crack when the device is flexed. The ability to use graphene instead is making possible truly flexible, low-cost, transparent solar cells that can turn virtually any surface into a source of electric power.

China’s Solar PV Market Passes 100 GW Milestone

According to data recently released by the National Energy Administration of China, as of the end of June, the country had a PV power generation installation capacity of 102 GW. The country added 24.4 GW in new capacity during the first half of this year, a year-over-year increase of 9 percent. After several years of development, the country’s PV power generation sector finally passed the 100 GW milestone, the same milestone passed earlier by the hydropower and wind power sectors.

Encouraged by a series of supportive policies issued at the national level, including the poverty alleviation policy for the PV sector, the country continued to experience rapid growth in distributed PV installations. The country boasts 84.4 GW in utility-scale solar and has added 17.3 GW in new installations during the first half of this year, down 16 percent from a year earlier. The distributed PV sector is up to 17.4 GW. Most of the new installation capacity went to Anhui, Zhejiang and Shandong provinces, each respectively adding 1.38 GW, 1.25 GW and 1.23 GW, together accounting for 54.2 percent of the country’s newly added distributed PV installation capacity.
Last December, the National Energy Administration issued the 13th Five-Year Plan for Solar Development, pointing out that the country is on track to achieve PV power generation installations of more than 105 GW by the end of 2020. As of the first half of this year, the target had been 97 percent achieved. This July, the administration issued the Guideline on Implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy Development, specifying that the country aims to add 54.5 GW in new PV power generation installations by the end of 2020. According to the Guideline, excluding Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Fujian, Chongqing, Tibet and Hainan, which independently manage the establishment of new PV power stations establishment, and Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang, which are suffering from excess solar curtailment, the country is expected to add 86.5 GW in new PV power generation installations as well as 128 GW in new planned on-grid capacity by 2020.
Recently, the National Energy Administration, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China jointly issued a notice on raising the technological requirements on major PV products and enhancing supervision, stipulating that from Jan. 1, 2018, the market entrance barrier for the photoelectric transformation efficiency of polysilicon silicon battery components will be raised to 16 percent, while that for the monocrystalline components will be upped to 16.8 percent.

According to the data, China’s PV industry generated 51.8 billion kWh of electricity during the first half of this year.
