, also known as , is a common condition in new-borns, typically caused by elevated/high levels of bilirubin in the blood. The skin becomes/shows yellow pigmentation (in the white of the eye (sclera) and other mucus membranes). Another term for jaundice is ‘Icterus’. Jaundice symptoms are indication of liver damage as bilirubin is mainly processed by the liver. Jaundice can occur in both children and adults. The condition is just as common among new born babies, where it is known as neonatal jaundice. Mucus membranes of the mouth also show yellow pigmentation in some cases. Other symptoms include pale coloured stool and dark urine. Jaundice, if not treated well in time, can lead to liver failure.
Causes:
1. Physiological Jaundice: This is the most common cause, occurring in about 60% of full-term new-borns and 80% of preterm new-borns. It happens because a new-born’s liver is still maturing, making it less efficient at processing bilirubin.
2. Breastfeeding Jaundice: Inadequate milk intake in the early days of breastfeeding can lead to jaundice.
3. Breast Milk Jaundice: Some substances in breast milk can inhibit the excretion of bilirubin, leading to prolonged jaundice.
4. Blood Type Incompatibility: If the mother's blood type is different from the baby's, the mother's antibodies can attack the baby's red blood cells, causing an increased breakdown of these cells and elevated bilirubin levels.
5. Infections: Certain infections, such as urinary tract infections or sepsis, can lead to jaundice.
6. Liver Diseases: Rarely, new-born jaundice can be caused by liver diseases.
Diagnosis:
Paediatricians usually diagnose jaundice by visually examining the baby and checking the bilirubin levels. They may:
• Visual Examination: They observe the baby's skin and eyes to see if they have a yellowish tint.
• Bilirubin Test: This can be done with a small device placed on the baby's skin, or a blood test to measure bilirubin levels accurately.
• Blood Group Testing: If blood type incompatibility is suspected, blood tests can determine if there's an issue.
Treatment:
Treatment for paediatric jaundice depends on the cause and the levels of bilirubin. Here are common approaches:
 Phototherapy: This is the most common treatment. The baby is placed under special lights that help break down bilirubin in the skin so that it can be eliminated more easily. The baby will wear only a diaper and protective eyewear.
 Exchange Transfusion: In severe cases, where bilirubin levels are dangerously high or rising rapidly, an exchange transfusion may be needed. This involves slowly removing small amounts of the baby's blood and replacing it with donor blood.
 Increasing Feeding: For cases related to breastfeeding, ensuring the baby is feeding well can help increase bowel movements, aiding in the elimination of bilirubin.
 Treatment of Underlying Conditions: If an infection or blood type incompatibility is causing the jaundice, treating these underlying conditions is necessary.
 Monitoring: Regular monitoring of bilirubin levels to ensure they are decreasing is important. This may involve repeat blood tests.
 Supportive Care: Keeping the baby well-hydrated and ensuring they are feeding properly is essential during treatment.

Homeopathic remedies for Jaundice –In- Neonatal and in Children
1. Aconite Napellus - For jaundice that appears acutely and suddenly. It is also useful in soothing fright, either a mother’s or a baby’s.

2. Aethusa Cynapium: Gastric disorders of disease, throws out milk as soon as taken, eats and vomits again, intolerance of milk.

3. Aloe Socotrina- Uneasiness with dull pain in liver and stool soon after a meal. Jaundice but no fever. Involuntary stool with passing of urine or wind.
4. Alumina- Liver pains, obstinate constipation, useful in the early stage of disease.
5. Arnica Montana- For jaundice that is caused from a difficult or traumatic birth. If a baby is bruised or swollen, this remedy is used as a preventive.
6. Bryonia Alba: It may be recommended if the new born is experiencing constipation along with jaundice, especially if there's a dry mouth and thirst for large amounts of water.

7. Calcarea Aresnicosa: for enlarged spleen and liver in children. Infantile liver of malarial origin.
8. Carduus Marianus: This remedy is mainly for liver problems, esp. Jaundice. Pain In liver region. Bad taste in mouth; vomiting of green and acrid fluid. Gallstones with hepatomegaly. Dragging pain in right hypochondriac region after lying down on left side.

9. Chamomilla: Jaundice in new born babies. Child cries a lot, better by carrying. Hepatic colic. Jaundice caused by fit of anger or any undue excitement. Congestion of liver; loss of appetite; nausea; pinching, twisting pains in abdomen.
10. Chelidonium Majus: It is a prominent liver remedy. Jaundice due to Hepatic and Gall Bladder obstruction. Cholecystitis. Liver enlarged, inflammation of liver and shooting pains in liver radiating in every direction of liver. Liver sensitive to touch, constant pain under the inferior angle of the right scapula. Gall stones. Eyes pale. Yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The white of the eye (sclera) appears dirty yellow. Yellow tongue, imprints of teeth and a bitter taste in the mouth. Babies are tired with sluggish bowels.

11. Chelone Glabra: A remedy for liver affections- jaundice. Pain and soreness in left lobe of liver extending downward. . Dyspepsia with hepatic torpor.

12. Chionanthus Virginica: It is a prominent liver remedy. Catarrhal jaundice with rumbling. Abdomen is sore enlarged, with jaundice and constipation. Stools are clay coloured, soft, yellow and pasty. Tongue heavily coated; tongue and eyes yellow. No appetite. Jaundice returning every summer. Urine contains traces of bile and sugar.

13. Cinchona Officinalis/ China- Is one of the most prescribed among Homeopathic medicines for jaundice with great weakness and exhaustion. Liver weakness due poor diet, loss of vital fluids. Jaundice due to gastric catarrh. Slow digestion; swollen liver and enlarged. Gall stone colic. Pain in right hypochondrium.

14. Hydrastis Canadensis: Liver atrophied, marasmus, jaundice, prostration and obstinate constipation.

15. Leptandra Virginica: It is a liver remedy with jaundice and black and tarry stools or clay coloured stools with foetid smell. Tongue coated yellow. Aching in liver region extending to spine. Severe pain in the umbilical region.

16. Lupulus – It is one of the most effective Homeopathic medicines for jaundice in new-borns and for infantile jaundice. There is yellow pigmentation of the skin and a slow pulse.
17. Lycopodium Calvatum: This remedy could be considered if the new born exhibits jaundice with colic, bloating, and gassiness. This remedy could be considered if the new-born exhibits jaundice with colic, bloating, and gassiness. Lyco. is suitable when liver function is severely disturbed. If Brown colour spots seen on the abdomen, reddishness in the urine is seen, indigestion problem etc. this remedy is of great use. Child may have a thin belly and they usually look older than their age. Babies are irritable, constipated. The belly rumbles loudly and is full of gas. Symptoms are worse from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

18. Mercurius Solubilis: Is a leading remedy for jaundice. Eyes shows yellowish tinge. Tongue is flabby and coated slightly. Stools- constipated, pale, dry, deep yellow coloured. Profuse sweat which gives some relief. Increased secretions esp. saliva. Liver enlarged, sore to touch, obstructive jaundice. Bile secreted deficiently.

19. Nux vomica: If the new-born shows signs of irritability, restlessness, and sensitivity to light along with jaundice, this remedy might be suggested. Best Homeopathic medicines for jaundice with diarrhoea. Pale or yellowish coloured skin, a yellow tongue, incomplete and unsatisfactory stools.

20. Phosphorus: There is yellow atrophy of liver and sub-acute hepatitis. Hungry soon after eating. Large yellow spots on abdomen; jaundice. Phosphorus works best for jaundice with great weakness and a pale, sickly complexion. The person feels especially weak after passing stool.

21. Podophyllum Peltatum: Sharp, cutting pains in liver region, with feeling of fullness and soreness. Vomiting of thick bile and blood. Constipation alternating with diarrhoea. Chalk like dirty, offensive, watery stools.

22. Senna - When the child seems to be full of wind, liver enlarged and tender. Constipation with colic. Loss of appetite. Stool hard. Oxaluria.
23. Sulphur: It acts as an intercurrent remedy. One can start treatment of jaundice with this remedy or can also end the treatment with this remedy. Pain and soreness over liver region. Colic after drinking.
