Ficus rumphii Bonsai development over the rock style
Root Over Rock is a style inspired by nature. In wild forests, many trees often grow on rocks as the trees attain age the roots give a stunning appearance to the base of the trunk of that tree. As Bonsai artists, we aim to make our Bonsai look mature in less time.
Root over the Rock Bonsai is one of the fascinating styles of bonsai. When the roots are exposed on the rock, These roots add an age and natural aesthetic look to the Bonsai. ROR style is entirely a different style of making. Usually, roots will be placed inside the soil while repotting a Bonsai tree, here we are exposing the roots on a rock artistically and trying to develop them on the rock as if the rock is supporting the tree's growth.
Plants like conifers, evergreens, and deciduous plants naturally grow on rocks. Selection of Plants for this style depends on the zone, and weather conditions. In the tropical Zone, the suitable plants are native trees like Ficus varieties. They are fast-growing and have a deep root system, and these are good for root over rock style.
Murraya exotica commonly called Kamini Bonsai. It is a nursery plant. it is growing in a garden pot. thought of making it into a Bonsai, primary shaping has been given by pruning big branches, and a primary shape was given. Secondary pruning was given after two months. now the plant is looking to get the shape of a tree. it needs more training. Still, the plant is in the garden pot and is allowed to grow. Next spring, the plant will be shifted to Bonsai pot.

Each Bonsai has a story. Let me share the story of my Barbados cherry plant, which captured my heart and found its way into my home.
On May 28th, 2018. At Shashikala Madam and , I bought this unassuming little plant—the Barbados cherry (Malpighia emarginata). Its glossy leaves beckoned, and those bright red fruits hung like jewels, promising sweetness and vitality. How could I resist? I bought it.
With just three branches, it was a modest start. But sometimes, it’s the small things that hold the most magic. I brought it home, cradling its potential in my hands. Little did I know that this unpretentious plant would become my companion—a living testament to my love for green beauty.
As the seasons unfolded, so did our bond. The plant grew, each branch reaching toward the sun. Those red berries multiplied, and delicate blooms swayed in the breeze. I watched, tended, and whispered encouragement.
In 2019, it surprised me with pink flowers—five petals of delicate grace. that later transformed into those vibrant red berries. Delicate blooms swayed in the breeze slowly. And beautifully.
The right branch extended, defying convention—it’s not a sacrificing branch; it’s a promise of more flowers and hanging berries.
2021: Encouraged growth, reshaping the trunk line by removing small branches. But it didn’t stop there. The trunk line transformed. And that right branch—is encouraged to stretch, to defy convention. It’s not a sacrificing branch; it’s a promise. A promise of more flowers, more hanging berries.
Now, in 2023, it continues to develop. Pruning keeps its form intact. Secondary branches emerge, and tiny third-generation shoots appear. Pads on branches hint at future beauty. And all this in a tiny Bonsai pot—limited space, but boundless growth.
So, here’s to my Barbados cherry, my patient companion. May it thrive, its trunk telling stories, its branches reaching for the sun. And when the fruiting season ends, I’ll trim those branches, preparing for the next burst of life. Fertilizers like Phosphorus and potassium are the activators for fruits—will work their magic.
In this miniature world, where bonsai trees flourish, I find joy. And perhaps, just perhaps, my Barbados cherry feels it too—a shared secret between a Bonsai art and Nature
Busy day.......
Jade is a succulent plant. It had a long trunk and a good canopy. First, we repotted them in an oval shape pot by placing stones to give stability. After a few months, the canopy became strong and a heavy load came on the trunkline, because of that plant started falling. To give support a canal Grove is made on the rock and the plant is placed properly in the Grove. With that support, the plant is standing tall entire look of the plant changed
Working on nursery Ficus plant. Defoliating is done to see the structure of the plant and branches. Cutting and pruning of some branches was done to give a primary shape to the plant. Wiring the primary and secondary branches was done to provide a style for the plant, and training started. It's a long journey for a nursery plant to become a Bonsai.

Learning of wiring a Bonsai tree, in the class.
Wiring technique in Bonsai
1) Wiring is done for functional purposes. But it should have an aesthetic look.
2) The angle of wiring will be 45 to 60 degrees. Less wire is more comfortable bending.
3) A shoulder point of a tree is the joint where a branch is attached to the trunk or primary or tertiary branch.
4) When bending a branch, the wiring can be done above or below the branch depending on the species like juniper and deciduous trees.
5) When wiring the right and left side branches, one will be clockwise, and the second will be in the anti-clockwise direction.-s
6) Usually, at any point, not more than 3 wires are allowed because of the aesthetics and functionality of the plant.
Happy to share the creations of Bonsai of our group during the Bonsai class.
