How do we select stocks for our investing purpose.

Let's say, you are 26 years old, just started with your career, and you have investible surplus of Rs. 2500 only. Out of this limited surplus, you have to make some prudent choices about stocks, as you are looking forward to build your portfolio.

How would you make the choices out of number of companies listed on the stock market?

You would ask your father or friend? You would follow some random tips on Telegram channel or WhatsApp channel? Or rather, take some efforts to study and research as it is your hard earned money, which you are planning to put on work for a long term?

The last approach is a rational and best approach. So here's quite a study which will help you to start with stock selection, you can take the pointers and develop you own style of investing.

Nothing beats your own research and study!

*Please note the important points.*

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป For physical mode of transactions, AMCs require additional written declaration as per their own format during the investment process along with the immigration proof (Proof that they are present in India at the time of Investment).

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปDeclaration format for all the above mentioned AMCs can be taken, for that matter pls *DM me with your email id* to send the NRI declarations for all the above AMCs.

*Important Information*

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปNRIs can invest in mutual funds in India via NRE and NRO accounts.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThey can invest directly using these accounts or by granting the power of attorney to a trustworthy person, who can invest on their behalf.

*They would require to have,*

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป *Non-resident External (NRE)*: It is suitable for NRIs who want to park their overseas earnings in India.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป *Non-resident Ordinary (NRO)*: It is an account opened in an Indian bank in the name of NRI. The main objective of an NRO account is to manage the Indian earnings of NRIs.

Once an NRE or NRO account is opened, NRI can invest in mutual funds in any one of the following ways:

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป *Direct or Self*: You can invest directly in mutual fund schemes via regular banking channels using your NRE/NRO account.

However, you will need to submit the KYC documents that include your recent photographs, self-attested copies of Adhaar, PAN, Passport, bank statements, and foreign residence proof.

Your bank may require an in-person verification, which you can manage by visiting the Indian Embassy in your country.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป *Via Power of Attorney (PoA)*: This is another way NRI can invest in mutual funds in India. The reputed AMCs allow PoA holders to invest on behalf of NRIs. You will have to complete the KYC process in this method as well. Both the NRI and the PoA holder must sign the KYC papers to be eligible to invest in MFs in India.

A couple of days ago, when the Fed announced that the new year may bring cuts in interest rates as inflation is easing, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF managed by State Street Global Advisor had a huge Santa Claus rally with the highest inflow since its inception in 1993.

Now what is the SPDR S&P 500 ETF?
Let's decode the name.

SPDR: Standard & Poor's depository receipt (also known as Spyder or Spider)

S&P 500: Standard & Poor's 500 Index

ETF -Exchange Traded Fund

SPDR S&P 500 ETF is the largest, oldest, and most popular exchange-traded fund listed on NYSE Arca.

It tracks the S&P 500 index, meaning its investment portfolio comprises 500 large-cap US stocks that are in the S&P 500 index with the same weights.

Here, the objective of this note is to highlight two points:

The first is the connection between , , , and . Just a signal from the FED that, next year, as inflation is going down, there may be interest rate cuts. People showed their trust in the index, invested, and the market rallied. The stock market behaves in a similar fashion worldwide.

Second, what are and how do they make lucrative investment vehicles?

ETF, short for Exchange Traded Fund, is very similar to mutual funds, but the difference is that it is tradeable on an exchange like a stock.

Hence, its prices fluctuate in relation to the underlying index during the day, unlike mutual funds, whose NAV is updated once a day.

Hence, when the underlying index rallies, the ETF also rallies.

When you invest in an ETF, you are actually investing in the whole underlying index. Further breaking down, you are eventually investing in all those stocks that are on the index with the same weights as the index.

Thus, ETFs are a good investment vehicle in which one can stay invested in the equity markets without selecting particular stocks which otherwise demands time and knowledge.

Again, there are different ETFs available with different underlying indices, thematic, sectoral, commodities etc.

If we compare it to mutual funds, its expense ratio is lower as there is less(passive) involvement of the fund manager in ETFs.
In India, the 1st ETF was introduced in 2002 by Nippon India Mutual Fund, named Nippon India ETF Nifty 50 BeES.

ETFs are considered an all-weather investment product, a product for savvy millennials, and a smart solution for the long-term investor.

Started with the US ETF example and ended with what ETFs are, because financial literacy is all about how we connect the dots and make sense out of different news stories spanning economies world wide.
