Smile Stories Junior
We are a specialized dental practice for Children, Teens and patients with Special Needs.
We provide a warm and child-friendly environment and make dental treatment an enjoyable experience by providing distraction aids and laughing (happy) gas.
I read this somewhere and it has always stayed with me,
Don’t underestimate children, they know more than they say, think more than they speak and notice more than we realise.”
Parents always ask us :
How will my child get dental treatment done?
Oh my god! how will my child get a tooth removed?
We Pediatric Dentists have to perform
dental treatment procedures for little children like cavity fillings, tooth removal etc and most children get it done comfortably 😊
While we have to use local anaesthetic, happy gas etc to help make the procedure painless, the first step is
✅to get to know the child and
✅involve them along with mom and dad in the process (in an age appropriate manner)
👨👩👧 👩🏽⚕️
That is really what brings out the cooperative spirit in children :
✅the whys and hows of it and
✅when they understand how it benefits them
✅Lastly, letting them know how their contribution was so important helps them recognise their skills and makes them feel
empowered 🌟✨
All that a Child really needs is,
To Feel Safe 💜
While all parents keep a thorough track of when the baby needs vaccinations 💉
when the baby can start bathing 🧼
when and how will the baby start eating 🥣food so on and so forth,
the one that is often missed is when should the baby start having his/her teeth brushed?
✅AS SOON AS the FIRST TOOTH emerges
👶🏻 🦷 🪥
Introducing brushing 🪥as soon as the first tooth emerges 🦷 is important as the baby starts eating 🥣👶🏻 in addition to nursing 🤱🏻 after 6 months and this food starts accumulating even on that one tooth 🦷
Starting early gives you and the baby enough time to learn and accommodate brushing into the routine by the time more teeth come into your baby’s mouth. 👨👩👧
Delaying introduction of brushing can make your baby prone to tooth decay 🦠🦷especially if their meals are sweetened with jaggery/ sugar or any other sugary item is introduced ( except fruits)
🍯🧃🍬🍫🍪
Fluoride Varnish :
❓What is it?
✅Fluoride Varnish is a coating that is painted onto your baby’s teeth to protect them from tooth decay ( cavities) by making the enamel (outer layer of teeth) stronger and more resistant to decay.
Tooth decay ( early childhood caries) is one of the most COMMON, PREVENTIVE diseases in toddlers.
❓Do all toddlers need fluoride varnish ?
✅No. Some babies may be at a higher risk of developing tooth decay than others. Also, if your baby is showing any early signs of developing cavities, they will benefit from applying the varnish.
❓Is it safe ?
✅Yes it is safe. Fluoride varnish is applied for infants by pediatric dentists all over the world and has enough scientific research showing it’s benefits.
Only a very small amount (about 0.4ml or less ) is applied and it sticks and hardens on your baby’s teeth quickly.
We will share more about fluoride in subsequent posts 🙂
So mamas and papas, let’s remember to also add this to our baby’s check list once the first tooth emerges 😃 :
✅Introducing brushing usually around 6-14 months of age
✅Getting a preventive oral health examination done by a Pediatric Dentist
All new parents go out of their way to make sure they’re doing their best for their new born 🤱🏻👨🏽🍼
Are they nursing alright? Are they sleeping /bathing/ p**ping/ peeing/ eating alright? Are their milestones in check? Are the vaccinations happening in time?
Make sure you add ORAL HEALTH to that list too 😊
Are they having their gum pads cleaned ( before teething) ?
Are they teething okay?
Are they getting their teeth brushed as soon as the first one erupts?
Is the brushing happening effectively?
Are they eating a healthy diet?
What care is to be taken while breastffeeding after teething?
First preventive pediatric dental visit by age 1?
Starting early goes a long way in making oral health care a part of their routine in childhood as well as adulthood 👶🏻 🦷 🪥 👨👩👦 👩🏽⚕️ 👧🏻 👩🏻

As a new parent 👨👩👧 with so much on your plate 🤱🏻, you are less likely to be concerned about your baby’s oral health, atleast for the first couple of years.
Also because awareness about children’s oral health is still so limited.
However, starting oral care from infancy will go a long way in PREVENTING many oral health related issues in your baby’s future.
As per world guidelines, your baby should have their first dental visit when the first baby tooth emerges.
👶🏻+🦷=👩🏽⚕️(Pediatric Dentist)
This visit is mainly about EDUCATION and MOTIVATION. We discuss :
👶🏻Healthy feeding practices or any difficulties that you may be facing with the same or in the over all health of your baby
👶🏻How to clean your baby’s gum pads and tongue
👶🏻How to avoid the bottle and transition to a cup
👶🏻When to start brushing? How? Toothpaste?
👶🏻Teething
👶🏻How to prevent tooth decay
This mommy came in and said, “I wanted to make a pre teething visit. I’m not sure how to clean my baby’s mouth and tongue and want to prevent tooth decay.”
We were thrilled and more than happy to help 😀
While Baby Myra here is really zen and enjoyed her visit thoroughly, not all babies have to be the same.
Many babies cry during examination, but don’t worry, it doesn’t take long and you’re holding and interacting with uth your baby throughout.
Is your baby about to teeth or has one or two teeth already? Make sure your baby has a preventive visit with a Pediatric Dentist 🙂
Hope this was useful? Let us know if you want to know more.
Summer holidays, when I recollect even my own as a child , mean a break from routine! A break from school and homework, a break from rules around sleep time, screen time etc.
While this is fun and a great feeling , too much of a break from routine or healthy habits can bring about unhealthy changes in both children and us adults!
We see many children developing new dental cavities right after a long holiday. So while we are enjoying our vacation , let’s ensure our children:
➡️continue to effectively brush their teeth morning and night (it requires such a teeny tiny part of their day) 🪥🦷
➡️don’t go overboard in eating sugary and processed foods which not only cause cavities but also affects their health 🍪🍩🍰🍫🍭🧃🥤
➡️play a lot and get their daily dose of exercise
Happy Summer Holidays 😀
“Do milk teeth matter? Because they’re going to fall out anyway!”
YES! MILK TEETH MATTER!
They contribute towards the ORAL HEALTH of your child which in turn is an important part of over all health.
Just like we would seek care for an infection in any other part of our or our child’s body, dental decay( cavities) is an infection of the teeth - which is an important part of your child’s body.
Milk teeth or Primary Teeth as they’re called
play an important role in
🦷 chewing all textures of food which in turn provide nutrition to your child 🍎🥦🍗
🦷 growth and development of your child’s face 👶🏻 ➡️👩🏻🧒🏻
🦷guiding the permanent teeth correctly into place when they erupt ✅
🦷your child’s smile 😁
Also, having clean and healthy teeth helps us feel more confident and good about ourselves , doesn’t it? 😀
What a star 🌟 you’ve been Shrinidhi! Cavity free for 3 years now! Kudos to you, mom and dad 🤗
Make sure your child has a Pediatric Dentist who helps keep their oral health in check 🙂
This brave cookie Saiesha pulled out her wiggly tooth when she came for a routine dental visit 😃🙌🏼
Does your child have a shaky tooth that isn’t falling out and they’re scared to touch the tooth?
Don’t worry! Let them take their time and slowly try to wiggle the tooth ( with their tongue/ finger) . Make sure hands are clean 🖐 ✅
Encourage them and tell them how this means they’re growing up and will soon have their brand new permanent teeth coming in. Cheer them, praise them for their effort and celebrate the tooth falling out!
This video may help motivate your child 😃
Things to watch out for 👀
1)Has the tooth been shaky for months now with no progress and not falling out ?
2)Tooth is shaky or not but the permanent one is already coming out from an incorrect position?
In case of the above, get an exam done by a Pediatric Dentist. 👧🏻 🦷 👩🏽⚕️
Things to watch out for once the tooth falls out 👀
1)Don’t worry when you see a little blood 🩸 Some children may panick. Assure them that this is normal . Simply rinse the mouth / bite on wet cold cloth or cotton and they’ll be fine in minutes ! 🚰 🍦😃
2)Sometimes , some children swallow a wiggly tooth with their food! Again , nothing to worry! It’ll be out in their p**p 🙂 🦷 💩
3)Some times, TWO BABY TEETH 🦷🦷may fall off and only ONE LARGE PERMANENT TOOTH 🦷 may come in it’s place - watch out for this 👀.
Many parents don’t realise this or may not be keeping a count. If this happens, get a dental examination done . It may be a sign that your child may develop crowded / crooked teeth if not looked into .

Thankyou for taking time out to say this Aarohi , you made our day 💓
Thankyou for reminding me to always be like a child - with an open heart ❤️
The one thing I learn from children every single day is to always stay curious and never stop learning 👶🏻👧🏻🤔📖🙋🏽♀️ ( other than pediatric dentistry, happiness in the small things and so much more) ❤️
Grateful to .tots sir
Starting brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts into your baby’s mouth is as important as getting vaccination shots/ having a bath.
But, how many of you find brushing your toddler’s teeth a struggle?
Are you worried it’ll hurt them because they cry and resist while brushing?
We shared one technique previously which involves two adults ( check reels) 👨👩👦
Here’s another technique that works well when only ONE PARENT is brushing 👩👧/👨👦
Key points :
👶🏻Useful for infants and toddlers
🪥Works well if the child is seated in their high chair so they’re supported well.
👶🏻Keeping the child’s hands occupied helps.
Here the little one is busy brushing the goofy dragon’s teeth while getting her own teeth brushed 😃
🪥 The dental chair here is supporting her head well. However , you may need to gently support your child’s head against your body with the non brushing hand while LIFTING THE LIP/CHEEK and brush.
👶🏻Sing a song/ keep talking to make it fun and keep the child engaged . P.S im yapping away the whole time in that video 😃
🪥Brush all the surfaces and the bristles must stroke the gums while brushing for effective cleaning ( should take about 2 minutes when all 20 teeth are in)
👶🏻Remember to CROSS BRUSH the molars ( back teeth)
🪥Use rice grain amount of toothpaste containing 1000ppm of fluoride ( check previous reel for more on this)
👶🏻Keep a napkin handy to wipe off excess foam till your baby learns to spit
🪥Consistency is the key and remember to cuddle/ say happy, positive things once done. Some days will be good , some days the child will resist, but keep at it and slowly the habit will form just like any other routine.
Happy Brushing ☺️
One of the main reasons that toddlers develop tooth decay is LACK OF ORAL HYGIENE .
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts into your baby’s mouth.
⁉️Why?
➡️After 6 months of age , complementary feeds in the form of semisolid/ solids are introduced which stick to even that ONE tooth that has erupted.
➡️Also, starting early helps the baby get used to brushing by the time more teeth come in.
⁉️Why start brushing at night so early ?
⁉️What has breast feeding got to do with it?
➡️Babies nurse till age 2 or longer .
Breast milk and breast feeding don’t cause cavities but the food that the baby has eaten through the day, sticks to the teeth. If the latch isn’t proper ( due to various reasons ), the milk can then pool and cause the uncleaned food to become more sticky, contributing to tooth decay.
⁉️What about bottle feeding?
➡️Feeding from a bottle ( especially to sleep/ in between sleep) causes pooling of milk ( unlike breast feeding) . This along with lack of brushing in the night will contribute to tooth decay in your baby.
Bottle feeding also interferes with normal growth and development of the jaws and face.
⁉️Isn’t wiping with a cloth or cleaning with finger adequate ?
➡️The food along with bacteria in the mouth forms a very sticky layer called plaque which cannot be effectively cleaned with a finger/cloth. A brush plus fluoridated toothpaste plus correct technique is what is proven to be effective .
So start brushing as soon as you see that first baby tooth mom and dads! It’ll go a long way I promise 😊
🪥 👶🏻
My eyes did well up, I’m not gonna lie.
That stunning piece of art has been painted by this talented and adorable little cookie, Kaashvi! Look at those colours and the strokes! 😍🎨🖌👧🏻
Thankyou so much for being such a star 🌟 during your dental visits and this absolutely heart warming gesture.

My First Dental Visit 😊🦷🪥
I am Dr.Pooja Rajagopal, a Pediatric and Preventive Dentist and the founder of Smile Stories Junior.
My love for Pediatric Dentistry stems from the fact that it is an intricate combination of science, art, psychology and most importantly, looking after little humans which brings me joy in abundance.
The general perception of dentistry being one associated with pain/fear, my aim was to dispel that notion and make dentistry a fun and positive experience for children and adolescents.
At Smile Stories Junior, we provide individualised oral health care for our patients based on prevention , education and minimal intervention.
We focus on the over all well being of the child and not only the teeth and mouth.
We strive to ensure that children have a compassionate, fun and comfortable dental experience so that it instills a lifelong positive outlook in their minds towards oral health care.
We love sitting on mama’s lap while getting dental treatment and also this little dental applicator brush
😃💕
Tooth Behind Tooth / Double Row of Teeth
This is a fairly common occurrence in children .
Don’t worry, Don’t Panic.
It is recommended you get it examined by a Pediatric Dentist if you see this happening in your child’s mouth.

Sahiti!! You are such a star 💫
Well done sweetie 💕
That’s How We Roll At Our Dentist’s
😃👧🏻👦🏻🦷👩🏻⚕️🙌🏻
Now that we know when and why must we start brushing our baby’s teeth as soon the first couple of teeth come in , let’s now address the HOW ❓
Starting toothbrushing for your baby 👶🏻 🪥
👶🏻Just like the baby adapts to many new experiences, tastes etc, the baby will adapt and many even love getting their teeth brushed.
👶🏻The idea is to get the baby’s mouth to be slowly and consistently DESENSITIZED to cleaning and brushing.
👶🏻 Starting early by simply wiping the baby’s gum pads ( before teeth come in) with a damp wash cloth really helps in introducing brushing later. 🤱🏻
👶🏻 Introduce the toothbrush in a fun, playful way as soon as a tooth erupts into your baby’s mouth. 👶🏻🪥😃
Let the child hold the brush, explore it in the mouth , chew on it with you around.
👶🏻Start with making circles on the one or two erupted teeth while you sing/ interact with the baby . 👶🏻🪥👫🏻💕
👶🏻Gradually increase the brushing time as more teeth come in .
The key is CONSISTENCY.
When brushing happens twice a day, daily and is followed up with cuddles 🥰, it will get incorporated into the baby’s routine.
This cutie Kabir is just a year old in the picture and loves brushing ♥️
Every child is unique and some will take to it instantly and some will take longer and may resist it for longer. Don’t you worry moms and dads , just hang in there and don’t give up.
One of the top reasons why children as little as just a year old develop tooth decay is
👉🏻lack of tooth brushing all together
👉🏻delaying brushing the teeth until the child is 2/3 years of age
👉🏻 not brushing the teeth at night
👉🏻inadequate brushing
You may start by simply wiping your baby’s gumpads with a soft damp cloth at first.
Once one or two teeth erupt, you MUST brush them with a finger brush/ soft baby brush.
The baby is usually 6-8months ( or older) when one or two teeth erupt and has started eating solids which adhere to these teeth.
Therefore brushing is a must.
It helps keep the teeth clean and prevents tooth decay .
When brushed everyday, twice a day from this early age, it helps your child slowly get used to the feeling of brushing by the time more teeth come in 👶🏻 🦷 🪥 👨👩👦
So much has changed since 2019!
Advay who was 5 is 7 now, we expanded our clinic and the pandemic struck us!
But our little champ has been cavity free since we last treated him cuz he’s eating healthy, brushing his teeth twice a day and visits us twice a year for a checkup 🤗
Wonderfully done Advay! Proud of you 🌟
Oh and we’ve moved on from being a PJ mask fan to a Marvel fan! Great choice buddy 🙌🏻
When tooth decay is left unchecked in toddlers (these pics are of 21/2-3 year olds) , it can progress rapidly causing these little teeth to crumble and leads to the following consequences :
1) Pain 😢
2) The child won’t let you brush this area due to pain/ sensitivity 😣
3) The child will avoid using these front teeth to bite into food (due to discomfort)😞
4)Swelling and Infection 🤕🤒
5)Aesthetics (smile) is affected 🤭
Unfortunately , more often than not we see little kids in this advanced stage of the disease 😔
Oral health awareness in children has a long way to go, world over.
Tooth decay in children or Early Childhood Caries as it is called, is preventable. 😀😀
As per international guidelines, it is recommended that your baby has their first (PREVENTIVE) visit to a Pediatric Dentist when they’ve developed one or two teeth, usually around age one.
👶🏻 🦷👩🏻⚕️
“I got a silver star on my hair band and a silver star on my tooth too!!” 😄🤩😍🙌🏻
In our last post we discussed how parents often confuse tooth decay for just stains from food and delay getting a dental examination for their toddler.
Here we have explained how STAINS look different from CAVITIES (tooth decay).
Stains on children’s teeth could be due to :
1)Iron or other tonic that may be dark in colour
2)Inadequate or improper tooth brushing
3) Berries like blue berries, black berries
4)POMOGRANATES! Yes, when eaten more frequently , daily. Brushing well twice a day helps prevent it.
5)Chromogenic stains- these stains form due to black pigment forming bacteria present in excess in some children’s mouth.
Stains are of no worry because they only affect the aesthetics of the teeth and not the HEALTH of your child’s teeth. 😊
They’re external and can be easily cleaned by the dentist.
Stains DO NOT alter the structure of the tooth. The tooth will have its smooth and shiny surface intact.
A cavity or tooth decay will alter your baby’s tooth surface by:
1)making it ROUGH
2)making it OPAQUE and CHALKY
3)causing a discontinuity in the surface / crater/ hole 🕳
They affect the HEALTH of your baby’s teeth. 😔
If you notice any such change in your toddler’s teeth, you must seek dental care so that it does not worsen.
We say TODDLER because tooth decay in the front teeth can begin as early as 8-9months of age. 👶🏻🦷
A pediatric dentist will help treat it in a simple, comfortable manner and also prevent it in the future 👶🏻🦷👩🏻⚕️😄
This is commonly asked by parents when they notice such an appearance on their toddler’s teeth.❓👨👩👦 ❓
Most often parents assume they’re some stains from food or tonics that brushing isn’t able to clean.
(A cavity will appear like a crater but a stained tooth will still have its original smooth surface.)
More often than not parents are not aware that even a little baby under 1 year of age can develop tooth decay / cavities. 👶🏻🦷
It’s not your fault mamas and papas, oral health awareness especially in children has a long way to go, world over. 👶🏻🦷 🌍
As per guidelines, babies should have their first dental visit when one or two teeth have erupted into the mouth.
🦷👶🏻
If you happen to notice anything out of the normal on your baby’s teeth, get it examined.
We understand that currently it is, the pandemic versus a dental concern.
You may take a picture of the area and seek a video consultation to begin with, so that the pediatric dentist will be able to guide you further.
👶🏻 🦷 📸 📱 📞 👩🏻⚕️ 👨⚕️😊
PediatricDentistry
A cavity(hole) or tooth decay is the breakdown of the tooth by bacteria .
HOW?
When your child eats sugary foods or sticky, starchy foods ( packed processed stuff ),or has sugary drinks, it gets stuck on/ coats the teeth.
This is basically food for the cavity causing bacteria. They digest it and form acid as a by product on the teeth .
👶🏻 +🍪🍬🧁🧃🥤🍫🥫 🥯+🦠 = ACID 🦷
Frequent ACID formation due to FREQUENT consumption of these foods/ drinks plus inadequate brushing starts DISSOLVING the outer layer of your child’s teeth .
This is what gives that frosted, chalky white, patchy appearance on your child’s teeth at first (initial stage of tooth decay- often missed).
If the sugary, processed food and drinks intake plus inadequate brushing continues , soon, the acid dissolves more of that white patchy area and a hole or CAVITY develops .
Pointers :
✔️All food and drinks containing artificial sugar ( biscuits, chocolates, cakes, ketchup, jam, breakfast cereals, packed juices etc) must be restricted to special days/ occasions like a treat.
✔️Assisted, supervised brushing twice a day with toothpaste containing 1000ppm of fluoride.
✔️Incase you notice these patches developing on your child’s teeth, do get an examination done by a pediatric dentist.
