Deciding to investigate the source of the orb, the team visit Razmaadi for more information. He reveals he had inherited the orb from his recently deceased grandmother and shows the team a hidden brass-lined room filled with ancient artifacts, at the center of which he had found the orb. A PKE scan reveals that Razmaadi himself is charged with spiritual energy, so the team brings them back with him to the lab and has him undergo a psychological evaluation by Dr. Peter Venkman in hopes of uncovering his true nature. Upon being sufficiently agitated by Venkman, Razmaadi seems to cause an open flame in an adjacent room to mysteriously flare.
With her family absent on a mission one night, Phoebe accepts a ghost emergency call from a local diner named Melody's. There she finds the friendly ghost by the same name she had earlier encountered. To the astonishment of Podcast, who accompanies her, she deliberately misses her shot with the proton pack as Melody flees. Melody later visits Phoebe at the firehouse and tours the facility, taking special interest in the containment unit where her fellow spirits are held captive. Later, she hears orders in an ancient language from the mysterious entity inside the orb, and laments that Phoebe must play a part in his plot.
Determined to uncover the mystery of the orb, Stantz takes photographs of the orb along with Phoebe and Podcast to Dr. Hubert Wartzki at the New York Public Library. Wartzki reveals the lore behind the orb: Thousands of years ago, a powerful godlike entity named Garraka was once weaponized by a power-hungry king before a feud between them ultimately resulted in the demonic entity attempting to conquer the earth with a power known as the death chill and an army of ghosts. Garraka's plan was thwarted when he was entrapped in a bronze vessel by Firemasters, sorcerers who essentially served as the forebears of the modern Ghostbusters. The Firemasters also removed Garraka's horns before imprisoning the demon in the orb. Upon hearing an electronic voice phenomenon from footage of the orb, Wartzki identifies it as the same language as the phonograph record played in the prologue of the movie, which he proceeds to play. Attempting to retrieve the recording for Garraka, a possessor ghost that escaped from the lab and Podcast had unknowingly carried to the library possesses the record. As it escapes the library, the possessor brings the stone lion statue Fortitude out front to life, forcing Phoebe to shoot it with a proton blast and destroy it.
The incident provides Mayor Peck with the political ammunition to lock up the Ghostbusters firehouse after impounding the equipment within; he promises to shut down the Ghostbusters' operation for good within days. A defiant Phoebe is briefly arrested as Zeddemore berates Stantz for his carelessness and his endangerment of the children; he suggests finding a less dangerous outlet for his spiritual curiosity.
Sympathetic toward Melody and hoping to physically interact with her, Phoebe decides to use the spiritual energy extractor at the Ghostbusters' lab to temporarily extract her own spiritual aura. The process is successful, but Melody apologizes as Garraka possesses Phoebe's ghost, compelling her to speak the chant that would free him from his orb. Her separated spirit and body speak the chant in synchronization. Melody explains that manipulating Phoebe into becoming a ghost was necessary to the plan since only a human voice speaking the chant would free Garraka from the orb, but Garraka was only able to possess other ghosts. Melody had made the deal with Garraka in hopes that the psychokinetic turbulence involved in his rise to power would open a pathway for her to a peaceful afterlife with her family. With seconds to spare, Phoebe unwillingly completes the chant and is returned to her living body. Lucky attempts to stop Garraka but finds her proton pack completely ineffective and is nearly frozen to death by his power. Freed from his prison, Garraka rampages across New York, retrieving his horns and using the death chill on a to***co shop owner he mistakes for the Firemaster, whom he perceives as the only real threat to him.
Gary and Callie retrieve a regretful Phoebe from the lab as Stantz and Zeddemore, joined by former Ghostbusters secretary Janine Melnitz, realize the demon's plan: to use the reservoir of captured spirits in the firehouse containment unit to build his undead army for the conquest of the Earth. As he approaches the firehouse with his coming heralded by a massive and deadly winter thunderstorm and icicles sprouting from the ground, the Ghostbusters plan a desperate defense and equip themselves with new proton packs from the offsite research lab. Stantz encourages Razmaadi to train himself in his family's ancient art of Firebending, which he learns with limited success. Warned by Lucky that the proton packs appear to be ineffective against Garraka, Phoebe wisely infuses hers with brass from one of the firepoles, knowing that it was similar to the bronze used by ancient firemasters to weaken and entrap malevolent spirits. Venkman also arrives to assist his colleagues. A potentially deadly incursion by the possessor ghost into the firehouse is thwarted by Nadeem, who prevents the spirit from killing Trevor with a possessed proton pack by channeling the proton beam out the window using his firebending magic. The possessor ghost is subsequently consumed by the firehouse's gluttonous attic ghost, Slimer, after it possesses a pizza and attempts to flee.
Garraka finally reaches the firehouse and overwhelms the entire team with the power of the death chill, ultimately incapacitating them all after their standard issue proton packs, as Lucky had warned, prove ineffective against the demon. Emboldened by his success diverting the proton stream, Razmaadi confronts the demon as well, but is unable to use his firebending power after revealing he had used up all of the fluid in his lighter on the training prescribed by Stantz.
Meanwhile, Pheobe confronts Melody in the basement over her betrayal, warning her that Garraka will not grant her the passage to the afterlife that she sought, which she would have to achieve from within herself, and urging her to turn against the demon. Phoebe then attacks Garraka alone, and proves successful weakening the demon with her modified proton pack, but is ultimately overpowered and frozen. Garraka successfully fractures the containment unit, freeing all of the spirits collected since 1984.
When all hope seems lost, Melody lights her last remaining match to provide Razmaadi with the spark he needs to begin his firebending attack on Garraka. The Ghostbusters are freed from the ice by the ensuing heat. Trevor, Callie, and Gary assist Phoebe with the physical strain of resuming her attack with the proton pack, while Stantz realizes that the now-empty containment unit can be quickly retrofitted into a ghost trap to contain Garraka while he is still standing over it and being weakened by the dual attacks of Razmaadi and the Spenglers.
With assistance from Zeddemore, Venkman, and Melnitz, Ray manages to suck the demon into the containment unit with moments to spare. The fractured containment unit seals itself and displays a green light, indicating it is secure. The unnatural winter gripping the city dissipates in moments as Garraka's power over it fades. Melody, her spirit redeemed by her act of self-sacrifice, bids farewell to Phoebe as she fades into the afterlife, fulfilling her wish.
The Ghostbusters exit the firehouse to the cheers of a surrounding crowd, grateful to the team for saving the city from an extradimensional threat for the third time. Mayor Peck prepares to have the Ghostbusters arrested, just as he did after causing the containment unit explosion 40 years earlier. Zeddemore however, by rallying the crowd, convinces Peck that it would be smarter for him politically to support the team, since they have just saved the city from being frozen under 3 feet of ice. The three Spenglers depart in Ecto-1 moments later to catch Slimer and the sewer ghost from the beginning of the movie, joined by Gary, who considers himself an honorary Spengler and whom Phoebe now accepts as her stepfather. Phoebe is reinstated back onto the active team for her heroics.
In a post-credits scene, several sentient Stay-Puft mini marshmallow men left over from the incident in Summerville steal a large tractor trailer filled with Stay-Puft marshmallows from a truck stop.
