Bloomberg: Apple Online Store for India to launch next month Apple is set to launch an official first-party presence in India, with the launch of the Apple Online Store beginning next month according to a report today from Bloomberg. This lines up with a Q3 timeline reported by TechCrunch earlier this year.

Apple is finally able to start direct sales in the region as Indian government rules that companies must source 30% of components domestically were relaxed last year. The launch of the Indian Apple Online Store will be followed by the opening of physical stores, starting in Mumbai.

The Mumbai store is currently in development and is set to open in 2021.

Bloomberg says that Apple has already scouted a location for its second India store, located in Bangalore near Minsk Square.

Previously, Apple has had to rely on a network of third-party resellers to sell its products.

For a long time, Apple has looked at India as a potential growth market for iPhone sales, having already saturated most other regions. India’s population of 1.3 billion people is tantalizing, however relative earnings remain low and Apple’s premium-priced products are out of reach to many. Over the last few years, Apple has kicked off manufacturing of iPhone models in India to avoid foreign tax penalties in an effort to keep prices down.

Apple’s share of overall Indian smartphone sales remains small. However, it is beginning to capture the high-end market segments, which inspires potential for long term sales growth as the spending power of Indian consumers gradually rises.

This giant glowing orb is the world’s first floating Apple Store

Apple’s worldwide retail network may be struggling during the coronavirus pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped the company from indulging in its penchant for pricey-looking, unique, and outlandish exterior design. The iPhone maker’s newest retail location, located in Singapore on the city-state’s waterfront and known officially as Apple Marina Bay Sands, can claim a world’s first title: it’s the only Apple retail shop on the planet that floats on water.

The location, part of the luxury hotel and resort of the same name, is Singapore’s third Apple Store following Orchard Road, which opened as Singapore’s first in 2017, and Apple Jewel Changi Airport, located in the world-famous retail sector of Singapore’s transportation hub that also features the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. (Singapore seems cool, huh?)

During the daytime, the new Marina Bay Sands store appears to look like an odd spacecraft of some sort or perhaps some form of futuristic theater.

Apple Watch dominating global smartwatch market in 2020 Apple's flagship wearable, including the latest Apple Watch Series 5 iteration, has long dominated the smartwatch market. The company's leading position in the industry remains strong, despite a slight waning in market share due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to new data via Counterpoint Research, the Apple Watch accounted for an estimated 51.4% of global smartwatch market revenue during the first two quarters of 2020. It wasn't even close, as Garmin devices and Huawei devices were the next in line with 9.4% and 8.3%, respectively.

The global smartwatch market is still growing, as well. Counterpoint estimates that total shipments grew 20% year-over-year, even during the pandemic. Across every manufacturer, about 42 million smartwatches were shipped in the first half of 2020.

For Apple specifically, the company's Apple Watch segment grew 22% with Europe and North America clocking in as the faster growing markets.

Counterpoint also estimates that the Apple Watch Series 5 was the best-selling smart watch globally during the time period, followed by the cheaper Apple Watch Series 3. After that, Huawei's Watch GT2 and Samsung's Galaxy Watch Active 2 took the third and fourth positions.

As far as where the smartwatch industry has to go from here, Counterpoint analysts suggest that fall detection and SPO2 blood oxygen monitoring will be two key features going forward.

The Apple Watch Series 4 already introduced intelligent fall detection, and there are rumors that an upcoming "Apple Watch Series 6" device could add blood oxygen monitoring to the Apple wearable lineup.

Apple at $2 trillion market cap tops GDP of Italy, Brazil, Canada, Russia and more!

Mumbai: Market capitalization of Apple rose past $2 trillion on Wednesday, and its value is now more than the GDP of a host of countries including Italy, Brazil, Canada and Russia.

The Cupertino, California-based company's shares briefly rose as to as high as $468.65 on Wednesday, equivalent to a market capitalization of $2.004 trillion, and even surpassed GDP of countries such as South Korea, Spain, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and Norway among many others as well.

Apple, which is the most valuable company in the world has seen its shares more than double from March lows. They are up around 57 per cent so far in 2020, with the share price seeing a boost from the strong forecast-beating earnings despite the Covid-19 pandemic and optimism over its upcoming 5G iPhone.

Last month, the iPhone maker delivered robust quarterly results, reporting revenue gains across every category and in geography as consumers working and learning from home during the COVID-19 pandemic turned to its products and services, Reuters reported.

Apple is followed by Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp, the second and third-largest U.S. stocks, both of which are valued at below $1.7 trillion.

In August 2018, the company had topped $1 trillion market cap for the first time.

Saudi Arabia's state-owned Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest producer of oil, reached the $2 trillion mark inDecember 2019 stock debut, but subsequent global economic slowdown and a plunge in oil prices has led to a tumble in its stock price.

Six Apple production lines capable of $5 billion in exports allegedly moving to India An inconsistent report claims that unnamed Apple manufacturing partners are moving six iPhone production lines to India, as part of an increasing trend to relocate from China. Following reports that Apple has pressed Foxconn to invest $1 billion in developing iPhone production in India, local sources claim that an unnamed iPhone manufacturer is establishing a new facility in the country. The claim also follows separate reports that Foxconn is now manufacturing the iPhone 11 Pro in the country.

In a new but inconsistent report published on Monday, The Times of India is claiming that what it calls a "contract manufacturer for Apple" is "shifting six production lines" for iPhones to India. It says that unnamed sources are saying that as well as making iPhones for sale in India itself, the new establishment will produce up to $5 billion worth of iPhones for export.

There's no detail over when that figure may be achieved. However, the report does say that it's expected the new plant will create 55,000 jobs over the next "year or so."

The new facility is specifically for the production of iPhones. However, the publication claims that manufacturing will expand to iPads and computers at some point.

The unnamed manufacturer may not be Foxconn, however, as The Times of India also says that "Wistron, Pegatron and Foxconn," will make phones under the country's incentive schemes. It notes that Foxconn already has a plant and says that Wistron and Pegatron are like to build in the country too.

However, Wistron already has three plants in India, and is building the iPhone in the country. The third, at Narasapura, one of the largest industrial regions in Karnataka State, to the north west of Bengaluru, is believed to be producing iPhones.

The Times of India asserts that manufacturers are moving production to India specifically to avoid reliance on China. It claims that "container loads of goods from Apple's key contract manufacturer have already reached India." But it does not refer to India's ports having blocked some such containers over customs disputes.

Report: Apple led global Q2 tablet shipments with 14 million iPads

Apple posted record results for the June quarter which sent its stock price soaring. Now Canalys is out with its estimates on global tablet shipments that detail how much Apple is leading Samsung, Amazon, and others.

Apple’s June quarter performance included $59.7 billion in revenue with $11.25 billion in profit. One of the strongest areas of growth for the quarter was iPad revenue, with the company highlighting it saw an increase of 31% compared to the same quarter in 2019.

Apple doesn’t break out unit numbers but just shared that iPad brought in $6.58 billion in sales in Q2 (fiscal Q3). Canalys is out today with its estimate on how many units Apple shipped and how it compared to the competition.

The analysis points to 14.2 million iPads shipped in the June quarter giving Apple a 38% market share of the global tablet sales for the period. Samsung came in second with 18% of the market. Huawei and Amazon came in third and fourth, respectively with 12% and 8% shares.

Interestingly enough, even though Apple certainly had an amazing quarter, Canalys estimates that Samsung, Huawei, and Amazon all saw greater growth when it came to tablets. The firm pegged Apple’s iPad unit growth at 19.8% while Samsung saw 39.2%, Huawei had 44.5%, and Amazon achieved 37.1% unit growth.

That contributed to Apple losing 2% of its global market share. The entire tablet market saw growth of 26.1% YoY.

iPhone 12 lienup to be released in two stages due to supply chain issues

This isn't the first time we hear about Apple's supply chain issues and how it may affect the release of this year's iPhones. In fact, last week Apple itself confirmed those rumors saying that the handsets will hit the market later than usual, meaning sometime in October.

But this new report coming from Digitimes claims that the rollout of the new devices will be split into two stages. The first stage will deliver the two 6.1-inch iPhones while the second stage will bring the 6.7-inch and 5.4-inch members of the lineup.

Unfortunately, there's no info on when those waves will happen but according to people familiar with the supply chain issues, the PCB production will peak 2-4 weeks later than usual. So we will be likely see all four iPhones on the shelves towards the end of October.

iPhone 12 launch date revealed, MacBooks with Apple chips coming in October
According to a reputable tipster on Apple-related stuff, the company is going to unveil the iPhone 12 family on September 8 and the Apple Watch Series 6 will tag along as well. Additionally, the leakster suggests that new iPad Pro, the rumored Apple Glass and MacBooks with Apple's in-house chips will make an appearance on October 27.

Although nothing is confirmed, we tend to believe the rumor given Apple's choice of dates in the past. Last year, the iPhone 11 family came to be on September 10, Tuesday and this year's September 8 is on Tuesday as well. Apple likes to keep things on schedule. Moreover, the report suggests that a new iPad and the long-awaited AirPower charging pad for iPhones and AirPods will finally hit the streets. Of course, the event will be online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On October 27, we will likely see new MacBook and MacBook Pro 13, both powered by Apple's silicon alongside the rumored Apple Glass project and a refresh of the iPad Pro.

Apple confirms rumors of slight delay in iPhone 12 shipments

For some time now we've been hearing rumors about a delay this year in the start of shipments of the upcoming iPhone 12 family, compared to Apple's past release timelines. This wouldn't be anything very large, the story goes, but would shift things by a few weeks.

Today during its earnings call for the third fiscal quarter of 2020 (also known as the second calendar quarter), Apple has pretty much confirmed this. Luca Maestri, the company's CFO, said that while last year Apple started selling the new iPhone generation in late September, in 2020 the company projects supply will be "available a few weeks later".
This is obviously expected to impact the results of the next quarter, the third calendar quarter, since the new models will completely miss it, not being out before the end of September.

According to some past rumors, the new iPhones could still be unveiled in September as usual, but wouldn't ship until sometime in October. Yesterday in its earnings call, Qualcomm also hinted at something similar when it talked about a "slight delay" of a "flagship phone launch" it's involved with (by supplying modems to Apple).

Sony at TGS 2015: New Controllers, Hard Drive Panels, and PS4 Price Drop

While the PlayStation 4 (PS4) has had an unprecedented run at retail the world over, it seems that Sony has sold enough to justify some slick new accessory options at its pre-Tokyo Game Show 2015 conference. These include hard drive panels and controllers. The former come in a host of colours such as yellow, blue, pink, and gold.

As for the controllers, they come in gold, silver, steel black, and transparent crystal. Both will be available in Japan from November 6. The hard drive panels will cost JPY 2,500 each (around Rs. 1,400) and the new DualShock 4 controllers will be available at JPY 6,480 (approximately Rs. 3,600).

(Also see:Gravity Rush 2 Announced as PS4 Exclusive)

And if you're not in Japan don't worry, Sony's European blog has said that the gold and silver controllers will be available in the West, but has not said when, nor has it commented on the availability of hard drive panels outside Japan.

In addition to this, the company also announced that its much awaited Morpheus VR is now being renamed PlayStation VR and that the PS4 will have a price drop to JPY 34,980 (around Rs. 20,000) in Japan. Safe to say other regions will see a price drop closer to the holiday season.

Due to stringent BIS regulations in India, don't expect the coloured controllers or the hard drive panels to make it here. As for PlayStation VR, it should be available the same time a release date is announced for Europe as is the case with every PlayStation hardware launch.

Facebook's Working on a Dislike Button, but It May Not Be What You Expect

Facebook's Working on a Dislike Button, but It May Not Be What You Expect
Brian Fung, The Washington Post | Updated: Sep 16, 2015 11:47 IST
Facebook's Working on a Dislike Button, but It May Not Be What You Expect
After years of requests from its users, Facebook has confirmed it's working on a "dislike" button.
"People have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day, because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it," Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said during a live Q&A session Tuesday.

You've long been able to "like" something on Facebook with the click of a button. But for some content, that doesn't work so well, Zuckerberg acknowledged.

"Not every moment is a good moment," he said. "If you share something that's sad, like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away it may not be comfortable to like that post."

The answer to that problem might casually be referred to as a dislike button. But Zuckerberg wanted to avoid creating a system of reddit-style up and down votes.

And with good reason: Unlike reddit, Facebook's feed is the product of a sophisticated algorithm, which means it would need to be taught how to handle the new button. Would a torrent of dislikes serve to bury a post in your newsfeed? Or elevate it?

Facebook's answer seems to be "neither." What the service appears to prefer is something that allows you to express "empathy" with "more options."

This isn't the first time Zuckerberg has considered the idea. In December, he revealed that he had been weighing how to implement a dislike button that would be a "force for good."

This may mean a range of possible responses that offer alternatives to the like option without being its direct opposite.

Two Men Reportedly Try to Sell Kidney for iPhone 6s

In a bizarre incident, two men in China's eastern Jiangsu Province apparently tried to sell their kidney for Apple's latest offering, the iPhone 6s. One of the men identified as Wu, wanted an iPhone 6s but could not afford it. His friend Huang suggested they sell a kidney each for money.

The two found an illegal agent on the internet who asked them to take medical examinations at a hospital in Nanjing, state-run China Daily reported.

However, when they arrived at a hospital, the agent did not turn up as promised. They later reconsidered selling the organs. Wu told his friend, Huang, to stop the plan but Huang did not listen. Wu then called the police, but Huang ran away and has been out of reach ever since.

This is not the first time people in China have gone to crazy lengths to get their hands on Apple products.

Two years ago, a Chinese couple illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, using the proceeds to reportedly buy an iPhone. A year before that, a Chinese teen reportedly sold his kidney to buy Apple iPhone and iPad.

Of course China is not the only country to witness such things. Last year, an incident came to light where a Saudi man reportedly asked for an iPhone 6 as dowry from the man who proposed to his sister.

"We have heard of quite a few things, but an iPhone 6 that has not even hit the markets here is a bit bizarre," Saud Ahmad, a Bahraini office clerk, had said at the time. "We need to promote a culture where marriage should not be used by anyone to get gifts or make profits in any way. If I had been the groom, I would have confronted the brother."

Apple will reportedly unveil the next iPhone on September 9

For those of you who are waiting for the next iPhone, here is some good news: Apple will unveil the device in the second week of September, most likely on September 9, according to a latest report.

The report also notes that alongside the new iPhone, the Cupertino-based company will also announce the iPad Pro as well as the next-gen Apple TV, something which is in-line with what we've already heard earlier.

If recent reports are to be believed, the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 6S. It will feature a Force Touch display and the Series 7000 aluminum, which is up to 60% tougher than the current aluminum alloy.

Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) officially launched, two versions after all

The Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) is finally official, putting an end to the endless rumor marathon. We already knew what to expect, but a very important detail eluded us, but it is now set in stone.

So fret not, the Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) does have 2GB of RAM, only not all versions of the smartphone. There are two options you can choose from and the 2GB of RAM come coupled with 16GB of storage, while a more modestly equipped 1GB/8GB variant is also available. A microSD slot allows expansion by up to 32GB in either model.

A 5-inch 720p display adorns the front of the smartphone, and it’s protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The Snapdragon 410 provides computing power with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 306 GPU inside. You get LTE support, as well as the obligatory Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The smartphone boots the latest Android 5.1.1 too, so no surprises here either.

The primary camera is a 13MP unit, aided by a dual-LED dual-tone flash. On the front, there’s a 5MP selfie shooter.

The Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) measures 142.1 x 72.4 x 11.6mm, though the thickness does go down to 6.1mm towards the edges. It weighs 155g, and Motorola have upped battery capacity to 2,470mAh, compared to the 2,070mAh of the predecessor.

Perhaps what’s most important in terms of hardware, is the IPx7 certification, which makes the handset capable of surviving after being submerged in up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes.

LG G flex 3

It will be powered by Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset, aided by 4GB of RAM. There will be 32GB of expandable storage inside, while in the camera department we should see a 20.7 MP main unit as well as an 8 MP front-facing one for selfies.

Oh, and the G Flex 3 will also apparently come with a fingerprint scanner embedded in its power button. The leak doesn't tell us if it will keep the button arrangement of its predecessor (pictured above), which has all of its controls on the back.

Since we're about seven months away from the claimed unveiling of the G Flex 3, it goes without saying that all of this may just be conjecture, or simply made up by someone with too much time on their hands. If any of these specs turn out to be true with regard to the G Flex 3, expect to hear more about them in the coming months.
