A journey from a TEMP AGENCY to a KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT PARTNER.

In my early days, I used to develop and deploy temp resources in support of a strategy consultant (however still doing it with more agility). The first is always special. Be it your first salary or your first client and first business too.

I had to spend from my pocket to complete my 1st industrial project. Based on requirements, I came up with a roadmap. Being a beginner, had no idea of how to negotiate with a client. The client agreed without negotiation. And I had that feeling of being on top of the world. That was a proud moment for me.

However, little did I know that I had made a huge mistake. Got aware, after completion of 30-40% of the project, I am going to surpass almost 40% of the cost of the project.

All the money that client paid has already been exhausted. I had no idea how to keep things moving. That project cost me a lot of money.

But the client really liked our work and I was happy that I executed it successfully.

I become confident about our *****ON capabilities. It helped me to on these intangible gains for my modest success so far.

You know, sometimes, it is okay to face some loss for a bigger gain. You have to change your mindset and look at the intangible gains.

Next time before quitting, reanalyze how we can make things better with what we already have.

My journey began with my .

My startup did not come out of brilliant ideas, conscious efforts, and structured thinking.

I wanted to work for and investment banking firms. Later I realized that I can’t get into such a role because of various factors.

I was jobless and was doing nothing 'productive' for more than 2-3 months.

I had pressure to get a job to live in Pune as my parents will stop sending money.

One fine day, one of the friends got an inquiry about a survey project from a contact in a local agency to carry Auto dealers' interviews across Maharashtra. He discussed with me and I said yes immediately for a contract job. We delivered the project successfully and earned a good amount of money. But we had no clue how to go ahead. This role me into what I am .

I started searching for a and got it after a couple of . During my job, I got deployed at the client site for a research consulting role.

However, got laid-off after a couple of years because the client withdrew . That was a painful and embarrassing feeling.

I didn’t waste my time looking for a new job. I started working on my . Now proudly working with the top-tier firm as a valuable .

This is not like usual research, Rajiv.

Think twice before committing to this job.

Confused?

So I remember, we had a client query to gather data. They required us to gather data as per their requirements and present it within the next 48 hours.

This was not it. The data collection was part of due diligence. We were not allowed to talk directly about anything to anyone. Just observation.

Believe me, this was challenging.

You have to observe every single thing for 24 hours and the next 24 hours are for drafting the report. If you miss a single thing, it can change the results of the entire research.

Although we had never done anything similar, we accepted it. We put in our best efforts to get this thing done to perfection. And we were successful.

Our client was happy. They even extended the contract. We were even happier.

But do you know, what this taught us?

It taught us perseverance. It taught us the value of hard work and self-belief.

When you believe in yourself, have faith in your potentials, no one can stop you. No challenge is bigger than your self-belief.

Sustenance during 1st few years of my start-up.

There are tonnes of struggles that come with it.

Survival Instinct is the only mantra to stay in the game. How to survive?

I am a proud entrepreneur of a bootstrapped company. I was in a kind of situation where I have to manage everything with personal savings and goes on to survive through initial sales.

It is not a very pleasant situation. You can not depend upon anyone to give you money. You have to build everything from scratch with whatever you have.

How did I manage everything?

I used to help MBA students with their assignments and tests preparations. These students were mostly from Middle East countries. I helped them perform market research, prepare presentations, etc.

I did not have many clients-partner then. I had to do other things to keep my Knowledge Management company going. It was a kind of side hustle that kept me floated in the market.

The time was difficult, but I knew I had to make things work out for my company. And I did it.

This proved to be a lasting impact on my venture. Side hustle paved the way for entering into education research as well. Thereby, opening new doors of opportunity for me in the long run.

Today I started my day with a fascinating story about a fruit vendor who employed an ingenious marketing method to sell his fruits. That was justified or not but he saved his customer base.

Such MIS-SELLING happens every day.

A fruit vendor who guaranteed that the watermelon he sold to his customer would be red and sweet and that if that did not happen, he can return the fruit. After a few hours, the buyer returned, furious and disappointed, claiming that the melon was neither delicious nor red. There were many other customers in the shop at the time, but the fruit salesman responded with a smile, stating that those were the sugar-free and pricey melons he had purchased exclusively, which had been supplied to him by mistake. With a sigh of relief on his face, the customer inquired calmly if those melons may be kept by him if he pays the additional amount.

We could notice both positive and negative aspects of the given story. If we look at this materialistically, the customer has been fooled. But we can't deny the satisfaction level, after a changed narrative, on the customer's face when taught that those were rare fruits that he bought for a very low price.

Customer happiness is always a significant factor in marketing, regardless of how you grow your sales.

In my initial days, I used to attend networking events. Attending those events was quite expensive. I was always short of money due to so many things going on simultaneously.

But I had one thing in mind, I needed to network with different people. I knew how powerful right networking was. And I was ready to put in my best efforts at it. However, to get an opportunity to meet and interact with industry leaders, I had to spend some money.

I thought of it as an investment in myself. And today as I look back, my investment has given me confidence and some success. It seems my investment was profitable.

A friend of mine once asked me, what do I do? I told him, I create knowledge. And he was like, how can anyone create knowledge?

I know for people who have no idea of my industry, this may sound weird. But knowledge creation is what my job is. I made him understand what knowledge creation is.

To make him understand, I answered the following questions:

Q. What is knowledge creation?
M. Suppose you came up with a problem and for that, you want to study the market. So, you started collecting data followed by analyzing and interpreting it to reach a solution. The information that you get is called a form of knowledge creation.

Q. How do I create knowledge?
M. I gather, observe, analyze, and interpret data for my clients. I deduce conclusions from the above steps. And thereby, create a fresh set of information. This is how I create knowledge.

Q. Does anyone need these kinds of services?
M. People need information. Suppose, you want to start a consulting project. You will need information about the market. You don’t have the resources. What do you do now? You hire me, and I will create that knowledge for you. So, there are a lot of people who need these services.
