कॉर्बेटच्या कथा
--
रात्रीचे साधारण दोन वाजले होते. दिवसभराच्या वाघोबाच्या, पक्ष्यांच्या आणि इतर प्राण्यांच्या कहाण्या कथून, पर्यटकांसहित सगळं ढिकाला (म्हणजे जिम कॉर्बेटच्या जंगलातील वनखात्याचे विश्रामगृह) शांत निजलं होतं. समोरच्या शिवालिक पर्वतरांगांना ढगांनी कुशीत घेतलेलं होतं. प्रोक्षण केल्यासारखा पाऊस सुरू होता. रामगंगा नदी नेहमीप्रमाणेच संथ वाहत होती. रानात गेल्यावर अशीही माझी झोप जागतीच असते. कसल्यातरी आवाजाने मला जाग आली. खाली नदीवर हत्तींचे चित्कार ऐकू येत होते. हळूच टॉर्च घेऊन कँटीनसमोरच्या कठड्यापाशी आलो. समोर पाहिलं तर क्षितिजापर्यंत फक्त अंधार आणि त्या अंधाराला एकटं वाटू नये म्हणून मधूनच त्याला भेदत जाणार्‍या वीजा. एकटाच शांतपणे मांडी घालून बसलो. डोळे मिटले आणि कानात हत्तींचे आवाज साठवू लागलो. आधी वाटलं एकच कळप असेल. मग वाटलं असतील अजून दहा पंधरा. डोकं जरासं चक्रावलं. न राहवून डोळे उघडले आणि त्याच क्षणाला लख्खकन, नेहमीपेक्षा दोन सेकंद अधिक काळ वीज आकाशात रेंगाळली आणि वीजेपेक्षा समोरच्या दृश्यानेच माझे डोळे दिपवले. खाली नदीवर सुमारे दोन अडीचशे हत्ती उतरले होते आणि परमोच्च आनंदात पाण्यात डुंबत होते. पण पुढच्या क्षणी पुन्हा अंधार. काही क्षणांनी पुन्हा उजेड. पुन्हा हत्ती. पुन्हा अंधार .. तासभर हा खेळ पाहात राहिलो. एका क्षणी तर इतकी उत्कट अवस्था झाली मनाची की वाटलं सरळ झोकून द्यावं स्वतःला खाली नदीवरती .. पण हलक्या सरींनी पाणी शिंपडून मला ताळ्यावर आणलं .. की नाही .. असं इतकं नाही वाहावत जायचं ... तू अजून त्यांच्यातला नाहीस .. तुझी औकात फक्त काठावरती. आणि कायमच काठावरती.

Savanna Nightjar
During my recent night safari in Pune, we heard a high pitch calling 'chree-ik' and it was too loud. Our expert immediately identified that it is Savanna Nightjar's call and the sighting is rare. So we followed the calling direction to spot the nightjar and finally we spotted. The view was mesmerizing as it was resting on a flat rock. As we geared up our camera it flied far away and the calling was also gone. We waited for some time but no luck. We decided to come back at this spot later and we moved on. After an hour or so, we came back and again heard the calling, we spotted it and this time we were able to capture few shots. The experience was beautiful.

Well-camouflaged nightbird, usually encountered roosting on gravel riverbeds, open areas in grasslands, rooftops, or roadsides. Sometimes found in small loose flocks when roosting. Fairly well adapted to urban life in some parts of its range and often found in towns and city edges. Intricately patterned gray-brown with less white than other nightjars; only males have a fairly small white patch on the wing near the tip. Most often detected by its distinctive, high-pitched, burry “chree-ik” song, repeated over and over.

'Common Iora'
During our recent birding expedition in Pune, this was the first spot early morning where we halted for tea. There was a small water body nearby and the morning sun had already lit the location. We were observing the beautiful place, While sipping the cup of tea and came across this beauty, the common iora. There were quite a few of them hopping from one branch to other on a tree which was nearby the water body. I was always fascinated with this bird, the rich yellow spread, the black and white layers on the wings, the black eyes makes this a piece of beauty.
The melodious chirping of these tiny beauties, while enjoying their morning meal, i.e. the fruits on the tree, made the ambience and our morning tea mesmerizing.
I loved this shot, the rich yellow color of the bird is standing out against the simple white background, there are highlights and shadows over the bird, which showcases a lively image and moreover, the bird is hanging upside down giving the frame a creative look from my perspective.

Breeding adult males are black above and rich yellow below with white wingbars. In nonbreeding plumage the upperparts are greenish-yellow, but the wings are still black with white wingbars. The female is similar in appearance to a nonbreeding male. These birds are quite vocal and can produce a wide variety of calls. The most commonly heard is the whistle “twiii tuiii twiiii.” Apart from this, it utters variable “chirrs” and chattering. The song is a trilled “wheeeee-tee.” Common Iora are frequently seen in wooded areas, scrub, and cultivated lands.
