Mrikula Mata mandir in Udaipur district (Himachal Pradesh) near the confluence of ChandraBhaga River and Miyar rivulet.

While it is now known as Udaipur (after Udai Singh, Raja of Chamba), the previous name of this village was Margul/ Marul, but the earlier name was Mrikula, from which the Devi temple took its name. As per local beliefs the temple was constructed from a block of wood by the Pandavas.

The temple with no particular date of origin was likely to have been built /rebuilt in the 10th or 11th century CE, though there are clear evidences of workmanship of early 8th century art & style. The temple style later further evolved, showing several phases of influences during the repairs made in the 11th and 12th centuries, clearly depicting transition phases of Hindu Kashmiri art to the Buddhist art of western Tibet.

Dedicated to Devi Kali, it is an unique and likely the last remaining wooden temple with evidences of workmanship from the early 8th-century artistic tradition.

As of now the temple shows the typical Himalayan Kath-Kuni style of architecture as seen in the Hadimba temple in Manali. The top of the temple is a steep gabled roof with wooden shingles, giving it the look of a pyramid.

Konark Sun Temple 🌻-



12 pairs of wheels and the 12 stone-carved wheels of the Konark Sun Temple represent the 12 months of the year.

These wheels that are found at the bottom of the temple also show time. The spokes of the wheel form the form of a sundial.

The exact times of the day are often calculated seeing the shadow cast by the wheels.

The Spokes of every Wheel Each structure inbuilt Konark Sun Temple represents the passage of your time.

Each wheel here has 8 spokes, each representing a 'prahar' which may be a 3-hour period, adding up to 24 hours which may be a day.

Seven Horses the temple is formed within the sort of an enormous sun chariot. This chariot is drawn by 7 horses, which represents seven days of every week.

The temple is one among the UNESCO sites in India for its unique model of antique architecture.

Sluice gate of Koravangala lake dating back to Hoysala period.

The Hoysala kings realised irrigated land gave more revenue by way of tax as compared to dry land. To enhance their revenues and hence the welfare measure, lakes and canals for irrigation became a necessity. Thus started a journey of the construction of dams, canals, tanks, sluice gates, temple tanks and wells. This dynasty is rightly famous for its temple construction. They should also be acclaimed for their work in the field of irrigation and water management.

Hoysalas hold the record in building most number of new tanks as well as renovating the old tanks. The regions of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru and Mandya enjoyed plentiful water, thanks to the rulers. These tanks were so expansive that they were often compared to the seas and named as Pala Samudra, Bheema Samudra etc. These kings had also decreed that the citizens should spend an annual amount of 30 gadyanas towards the maintenance of the canals and outlets of the tanks.

The Hoysala kings encouraged the farmers to move on to commercial corps that yielded more revenue. To achieve this goal, betterment in irrigation system was their route. After setting up water sources, the kings increased the tax nominally for a few years and once the cultivation stabilised, the full rate of tax was charged.

To regulate the flow of water from the tanks, Hoysala kings constructed sluice gates on the tank bed. These could be operated by the village council.

The artistic flare of the dynasty shows even on these simple structures. Many of the sluices are now gone and cannot be traced. The tank at Arakere in Arasikere taluk had eight sluices. Today, we can find two of them. The sluices are seen in Koravangala, Nuggehalli, Tiptur and other villages. Unfortunately, these are not maintained and have become inoperable.
