Today, we organized a programme to unveil & celebrate our newly revamped infrastructure, bringing in a world class facility equipped with all modern diagnostic and treatment instruments crucial to ensure quality treatment reaches to all in the region.

The programme “Hamara Naya Chehra, Hamari Nayi Pehel” was organized to inform the region and the press of our newly undertaken initiatives, expansion of service basket and the scope of services that the hospital today hosts to create accessible eye care spaces across the region continuing with the trust that we have earned from our patients.

As we upgraded ourselves to a new administrative block, we prayed today for a clearer vision, the tenacity and vigour in planning, taking decisions that reflect through our hospital and community based programmes to reach all in the region.

Today, also revives our promise, our reassurance to our people ensuring world class affordable quality eye care services.

INTEGRATED PEOPLE-CENTERED EYE CARE- TO DECLARE NAMCHI DISTRICT AS A CATARACT BACKLOG BLINDNESS-FREE DISTRICT.
Namchi District Hospital Eye Department hosted a training session on Integrated People-Centered Eye Care, aiming to declare Namchi District as a cataract backlog blindness-free zone. The event started with the Ophthalmologist, District Hospital Namchi, and Programme Manager, extending a warm welcome to the attendees, including the Senior Optometrist, and Trainer from Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital.
The training, under the ambit of Project UJJYALO-Disability Inclusive Universal Eye Health Sikkim, witnessed the active participation of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and ASHA workers from Namchi District Hospital, alongside counterparts from primary and community health centers across the district.
The primary objective of the training was to equip clinical staff and ASHA workers with the skills for conducting door-to-door assessment surveys using an innovative mobile application (EMR). This application facilitates comprehensive screening of all village inhabitants, enabling prompt identification and documentation of visually impaired individuals for subsequent rehabilitation. Additionally, the EMR app promises to offer valuable insights into the prevalence of various diseases among the screened population.
In the initial phase towards achieving the cataract backlog blindness-free district status, several villages have been earmarked for focused interventions. These include Wok Omchu, Omchu, Mamley-Kamrang, Kitam-Manpur, and GOM Sorok-Shyampani, situated within Namchi South Sikkim.
Vision impairment, including blindness, is a serious public health problem globally with a disproportionately larger prevalence in middle to low-income countries. As per the recent WHO estimates, approximately 2.2 billion people have near and distance vision impairment globally, and out of this almost 90% of VI is avoidable.
Vision impairment has a huge impact on quality of life and can jeopardize educational attainment and employment. Beyond patients, it also places a heavy burden on caregivers and society.
Door-to-door assessment surveys are less expensive and less time-consuming compared to detailed and resource-intensive epidemiological studies.
D2D assessment of Avoidable Blindness methodology provides valid estimates in a short time to assess the magnitude and causes of blindness.
More than 90% of visual impairment can either be treated or avoided. A "cataract backlog blindness-free district" refers to a district where there's no backlog of untreated cataract cases, meaning all individuals with cataracts have received timely treatment. This status is a significant milestone in healthcare, particularly in regions where cataracts are prevalent.
Here's why achieving this status is important:
Preventable Blindness Reduction: Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness worldwide, but they are treatable with surgery. By ensuring there's no backlog of untreated cases, districts can significantly reduce the incidence of preventable blindness.
Improving Quality of Life: Cataracts can severely impair vision, making daily activities challenging. Timely treatment not only prevents blindness but also improves individuals' quality of life by restoring their vision.
Economic Impact:Blindness or visual impairment due to untreated cataracts can hinder individuals' ability to work and earn a living. By addressing the backlog, districts can potentially enhance economic productivity and reduce the burden on social welfare systems.
Healthcare Access and Equity: Achieving a cataract backlog blindness-free district status reflects improved access to healthcare services and equity in healthcare delivery. It ensures that all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status, have access to essential eye care services.
Healthcare System Strengthening: Eliminating the backlog requires efficient healthcare systems, including robust infrastructure, trained personnel, and streamlined processes. Achieving this status can contribute to the overall healthcare system strengthening in the district.
In summary, the need for cataract backlog blindness-free districts stems from the goal of reducing preventable blindness, improving quality of life, enhancing economic productivity, promoting healthcare equity, and strengthening healthcare systems.
