Here’s the full schedule for ICBE 2021 our first international undergraduate student conference
titled ‘On Questions Concerning our ’. Mark your calendars, as we are only 2
weeks away from this engaging 3-day event!
The International Conference on the Built Environment ( ) will take place from 17th to 19th
September 2021. The conference includes lectures by our distinguished keynote speakers, Prof (Dr.)
Hilal Ahmed and Mr. Thomas Crowley alongside 8 panels curated by our esteemed review panel
and JSAA School Research Committee. Selected papers under each panel address questions related to
built heritage, architecture theory, dwellings, representation, building practices and other similar
discourses.

Over the past month we received more than 100 abstracts from students across the globe for the
International Conference on the Built Environment . Spanning between 17th to the 19th
September 2021, our first undergraduate student conference aims to encourage undergraduate
students and researchers in the field of to engage with each other and discuss their
research in varying fields of built heritage, architecture theory, dwellings, representation, building
practices and other similar discourses.

The S*x of Design course invited architect Madhavi Desai for a special talk titled : Women Architects and Modernism in India: narratives and contemporary practices.
We are very proud to share that the session started with Ms. Desai congratulating JSAA for being the only school so far in India offering a core course on Gender and Architecture.

“As a student I have always read about works of Male Architects but never questioned about their dominance and representation. It was only after this talk (about women architects and their struggle) I began to acknowledge the lack of representation of women architects in this profession. Madhavi ma’am shared her own experiences and work on women and the built environment. She discussed about a few women architects and some of their works which were quite unrecognised. It left me questioning

Madhavi Desai is an architect, researcher, writer and teacher. She is a founding member of the Women’s Architect Forum, author of Women Architects and Modernism in India and the editor of Gender and built Environment in India.

The Design Theory II course invited artist Bhasha Chakrabarti for a special talk titled: Histories of Indigo_ Working with Indigo.

“The talk was about indigo, how it was traded and the way it was used (basically the history). She showed her work with indigo and how she dyes the fabric using blocks of indigo. Before the talk if somebody talked about the word 'indigo, I would've thought about what I read in the school history books (the sufferings, power, domination) But in this talk I learnt how one object is entangled with history and how it passed through so many stages to get the meaning it has now.”

Bhasha is an artist based out of Yale, and primarily works with dyeing, mending, and making her artistic works with cloth and Indigo. The talk also included a studio visit!
