I had the opportunity to be on the radio earlier this week, and speak on trauma and orthopaedic problems, and what we can do to deal with them best. Grateful to RedFM and RJ Sameen for hosting me, and also for providing the excerpts of the interview which I am sharing here for everyone interested to listen.
Drop any questions in the thread and I'll try my best to get back.
Best wishes.
Hello
I am away for about 10 days, starting tomorrow. Please bear with me. You can book appointments on 6006684736 for consults starting Dec 10, InshaAllah.
Robotic joint replacement surgery is rife, and there is a mistaken assumption that it is better than the conventional method. IT IS NOT. There exists no convincing evidence that robotic knee replacements perform better than regular done operations (by well trained surgeons!) A lot of the hype is industry driven for obvious reasons.
The Australian Orthopaedic Association which is the regulatory body for the speciality in AU and NZ, published a consensus statement about this because surgeons claiming better joints with their robots started to become a problem..

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend.
I keep getting patients who are candidates for joint replacement surgery, and who ask whether their 'golden' card will be enough.
The short answer is no.
I spend quite a bit of time explaining why, so I thought I might do it here in the interest of the general public. The allowance for, lets say a knee replacement, in the GC is barely enough to buy a good quality implant and a few consumables. The only way you can get a high quality implant while you use your GC is if you get your operation in a government hospital where everything is free (no surgeon fee/anesthesia fee/theatre and room charge, running supplies, etc) To do in a private hospital, where the staff needs to be paid, and then a profit made as well, there has to be significant compromise at several levels, including the implant you get and the consumables that are used (quality and quantity) to fit in the GC budget. I wouldn't want that kind of care for my own family, so I can't want it for my patients. Hope this helps.

So I havent had time yet to make the short educational videos like I had promised. Not good quality ones anyway (editing is tedious!)
While I work on the videos, here are some short posts about some very common problems that I hear in the clinic fairly regularly. Esentially myths, some of which seem to have had the help of healthcare workers in propagation.
The first one is what I had two patients for today: Vertigo.
