Do you wash your mouth properly?
Mouthwash is typically used to help freshen breath and help rinse out food particles after eating. Mouthwashes containing fluoride provide a better benefit because they help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. Mouthwashes without fluoride do not provide this benefit and only help reduce bad breath temporarily.
Is Mouthwash a Cure for Bad Breath?
Many mouthwashes are classified as cosmetic and do not have a long-lasting effect on bad breath. If you use mouthwash or mints often to hide unpleasant mouth odor, see your dentist to determine the cause for consistent bad breath.
Early Childhood Caries
Early childhood caries are also known as cavities or tooth decay in young children—specifically from birth to 6 years old. Children are very susceptible to tooth decay because the enamel (protective covering) on primary teeth is much thinner than the enamel on permanent teeth. Therefore, it’s important to monitor your child’s sugar intake and oral hygiene habits, as well as scheduling regular visits to the dentist to ensure their baby teeth grow in properly and remain healthy.
When baby teeth decay, it can severely impact the permanent teeth growing underneath. Early childhood caries can be very harmful to a child’s oral health by preventing the proper growth and eruption of their permanent teeth.
Did you know - Chewing Gum Helps Prevent Cavities
The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests chewing sugarless gum after meals to help prevent tooth decay. Chewing gum increases the flow of saliva in your mouth, which naturally washes away bad bacteria. Gum that contains sugar also increase saliva flow, but the sugar produces plaque bacteria that lead to tooth decay. The ADA recommends sugar-free gums with the ADA Seal of Acceptance to assure they are sweetened only with non-cavity causing sweeteners.
It should also be noted that chewing gum should NOT be used as a replacement for regular brushing and flossing. Proper brushing twice per day and flossing once per day is the only way to remove plaque and maintain optimal oral health.
How To Prevent Cavities and Tooth Decay
Here are some tips for preventing cavities and tooth decay:
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner
Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking, especially high-sugar foods and drinks
Check with your dentist about the use of supplemental fluoride and dental sealants to protect your teeth from decay
Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and examinations.
Pit and fissure sealants are a dental treatment intended to prevent tooth decay. Teeth have recesses on their biting surfaces; the back teeth have fissures (grooves) and some front teeth have cingulum pits. It is these pits and fissures which are most vulnerable to tooth decay because food and bacteria stick in them and because they are hard-to-clean areas. Dental sealants are materials placed in these pits and fissures to fill them in, creating a smooth surface which is easy to clean. sealants are mainly used in children who are at higher risk of tooth decay, and are usually placed as soon as the adult molar teeth come through.

4 reasons to get an oral cancer screening.
With a five-year survival rate as low as 60%, oral cancer is scary. Protect yourself by getting checked for the disease today. Here are the top four reasons you should add “oral cancer screening” to your wellness to-do list.
It’s easy.
Just ask your dentist to check for signs of oral cancer during your regular dental exam.
It can save your life.
Oral cancer is a devastating disease — but you can boost your chances of survival by at least 20 percentage points when the disease is caught early.
It’s inexpensive.
When an oral cancer exam is incorporated into your regular exam, there’s no extra expense unless follow-
up procedures are needed.
It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Even if you don’t have oral cancer, isn’t it better to be sure?
Don’t Skip Brushing Before Bed – Here’s Why
While it may seem tempting to skip brushing your teeth at night if you’re already comfortably lying in bed, the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day goes beyond fresh breath. Skipping brushing at night because you don’t want to get up or don’t think it’s worth it can cause major problems for your teeth in the long
Dentists claim brushing before bed is the most important time to brush because at night, your saliva production decreases. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against bacteria in the mouth because it has anti-bacterial properties, neutralizes the acid level in your mouth, and washes away food remnants.
How Plaque Builds Up When You Don’t Brush
Bacteria in your mouth that stays there after you skip brushing before bed creates plaque. Plaque is the sticky, fuzzy substance you feel along your teeth when you haven’t brushed in a while. It takes about 24 hours for the plaque that bacteria produce to build up and mature in your mouth.
When you do brush, you destroy this growth of bacteria that has developed since you last brushed.
It’s especially important to brush before you go to bed because while you are asleep, your bodily functions are in resting mode. That means that your mouth and teeth are inactive, so they don’t produce the same amount of saliva that they usually do when you’re awake. Saliva is your body’s natural protector for your mouth because it maintains the pH balance that is ideal for healthy teeth. Saliva contains bicarbonate, calcium, and phosphate, which help your mouth destroy plaque and repair damage and decay on your teeth.
So, make sure you’re regularly scheduling dentist visits to avoid the buildup of plaque and destruction of your teeth. Also make sure you’re thoroughly brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
Next time you’re thinking about skipping brushing your teeth at night, run your tongue over your teeth and think about what you are going to let grow in your mouth overnight.
If you dont floss, you miss 40% of your tooth surfaces. Makesure you brush and floss twice a day.
Myth and truth about teeth whitening:
Myth
Rubbing fruit on your teeth can help to remove stains
Stawberries, lemons, even banana peels - we've heard of people reaching for the fruit bowl in an effort to get a shiny smile, but does it work?
Truth
"No". Not only will this not remove stains, but it will also seriously damage your teeth. Fruit acids and acids in the other foods we eat and drink cause tooth enamel to wear away and teeth can become discoloured and yellow as a result. Brushing after a meal will help, but avoid doing so for 20 minutes after consuming acidic foods. Acid softens your enamel, and brushing too soon will only speed up tooth wear before the enamel has time to settle again."
Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after consuming a highly acidic meal or drink when enamel is at its softest...

Myths about root canals
The thought of a root canal may make you fearful or uneasy if you aren’t familiar with the procedure. There are common misconceptions that endodontic treatments such as root canals, cause pain and/or illness and should be avoided at all costs. The exact opposite is true.
1) Root canal treatment is painful : Decades ago that may have been the case, but with modern technology and anesthetics you won’t experience any more pain than if you went to have a cavity filled.
2) Root canal treatment causes illness: Information you may find on the Internet or elsewhere, claiming that if you receive a root canal treatment you’re more likely to become ill or contract a disease in the future simply isn’t true.
3) It’s better to pull a tooth than have root canal treatment: Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is always the best option. Nothing artificial can replace the look or function of a natural tooth so it’s important to always consider root canal treatment as an option. Endodontic treatment has a high success rate and many root canal-treated teeth last a lifetime.
Did you know facts about toothbrushes?
1. Bristles of a toothbrush wear out within 6 to 16 weeks of usages. Worn out bristles don’t clean well and hence, replacing toothbrushes every 6 to 16 weeks is a good idea.
2. People think that putting on a cap on a toothbrush is a good idea. Actually it is not. Doing so traps moisture and helps the growth of microbes.
3.Dentists say us to keep our toothbrushes at a distance of 2 meters from our toilets. Why so? So that airborne microbes and other particles don’t reach our brushes when we flush. For example, E. coli bacteria can easily reach our brushes if within 2 meters of toilet
