I had the most complicated bike fit session with Edward, who came from Mira road with a wrongly fitted bike which apparently was one size bigger. To compensate, the seller had changed the stem to a 35mm one. Another non doing was moving the saddle forward to shorten the reach, without understanding that when the saddle is moved, so is the powerhouse from where power is developed and sent through the hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves to the foot, affecting the angle of power delivery and center of gravity. It's quite surprising that Edward persisted with this setup and endured all the associated pain. He came with wrist, knee, shoulder, and performance issues.
It became even more evident and complicated when he started shouting in pain with certain setups that I gave him. To an extent that after correcting most issues, the knee pain would come up with 1mm changes, and ultimately I had to bring the accuracy to 0.5mm to get rid of it. This was a real eye-opener for me in terms of how such a small change can make the difference between comfort and pain, something only a student of kinesiology can understand. I was in awe. Imagine he's in pain putting 150 watts of power with a 1mm change, and with 0.5mm, he's able to deliver 400 watts without pain!
The session lasted over 3 hours, and thereafter, he rode to work from Thane to Malad 'without pain and much faster', as per his words.
It was a complicated, difficult, but very satisfying session. This session itself is a testimony to the fact that bike fit is a must for all, but due to lack of awareness, the majority persists with painful and sub par performance on their wrongly set up expensive machines, instead of enjoying their rides much more comfortably.

It might surprise you to know how intertwined the realm of cycling is with factors such as gear ratios and saddle sores. Yes, you heard it right, your bike’s gear ratio can influence your likelihood of acquiring saddle sores.

The science behind this statement is relatively straightforward. When you use a higher gear, you'll notice a decrease in saddle soreness compared to when you're on a lower gear. This is due to the fact that in a higher gear, your bike generates more wattage, causing you to be slightly off the saddle, almost floating. This reduces the direct friction and pressure exerted on you by the saddle, lowering the chances of sores.

On the other hand, on a lower gear, the force of gravity is fully at play, and you're firmly seated on the saddle. The constant pressure and friction can potentially increase the risk of developing saddle sores.

However, it's crucial to strike a balance. A much higher gear requires more effort, which could lead to fatigue, while lower ratios mean lesser output and increased saddle soreness.

Remember, the gear ratio isn't the only factor that contributes to a comfortable ride. Correct posture, facilitated by a properly done bikefit, can make your cycling experience more enjoyable and less soreful. The right bike fit reduces pressure points and improves your overall cycling performance and enjoyment.
