Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott has simplified chasing for his batters by giving them set targets for every 10-over mark in this World Cup. They followed that to get to 283 and 243 with ease against Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively.

“There is a bit more focus with regards to breaking it down into smaller targets, for sometimes you know sitting out in Pakistan getting chasing 280 and starting on nought, it’s a long way,” Trott said.

“If you break it down, that seems a lot more manageable, so those sort of little things, motivating the players and keeping them in touch with where we want to be, And that’s also a feel-good fact if you know you are on the right track, it’s also a nice feeling as well.”

Twice in a row, Afghanistan have put up a chasing masterclass. It was Pakistan a few days ago, and Sri Lanka today. In both chases combined, they just lost 5 wickets and scored 528 runs in total. Gee, isn't that impressive? Rashid Khan (playing his 100th ODI) is chuffed to bits as he joins his mates in the rally along the circumference. The Afghan players are thanking the crowd and are getting plenty of support from the fans present at the stadium. On a good batting deck, 241 was never going to be enough and although Sri Lanka nipped out Gurbaz in the opening over, the others weren't ready to budge. Only Ibrahim Zadran missed out on a fifty, but the trio of Rahmat Shah, Azmatullah and Shahidi compiled fifties to complete the chase with barely any hiccups. Sri Lankan bowling was good in patches, but unfortunately they didn't have enough runs to play with the required rate pressure. Well played Afghanistan !!!

What a thrilling game of cricket. Absolute eye-feast and a much-needed one for this tournament. In an ideal scenario, chasing 389 - you need someone from the top 3 to get a big score, a cameo from a couple of batters and a decent start. New Zealand got all of it but still failed to get past the finish line. Perhaps you can attribute a little part to bad luck, but fielding is something New Zealand dearly pride themselves on and unfortunately for them today, they weren't at their best and it did seem to be one of the major difference between sides. Rachin Ravindra played the best knock of his life and his century ensured the Kiwis were on level with Australia (292/5) at the end of 40 overs. The untimely wickets of Phillips and Latham combined with absence of a set batter in the last 9 overs came back to haunt New Zealand. All said and done, Australia seized the crunch moments and their fielding effort too (barring a couple of blips) deserves a special mention, especially in the last couple of overs.
