Bullying can trigger depression and anxiety, and it can lead to low self-confidence and low self-esteem. Many individuals who are part of the LGBTQ community continue to face discrimination in their personal lives, in the workplace and the public sphere, and in their access to critical health care. This experience of discrimination leads to many adverse consequences for their financial, mental, and physical well-being. Many LGBTQ individuals report altering their lives to avoid this discrimination and the trauma associated with unequal treatment. Younger generations generally report higher levels of discrimination and attendant problems than do older generations.

Mental health issues have been linked to family genetics, biological factors, and life experiences. Mental health issues don’t discriminate. There is no specific type or age of persons that mental health problems affect – they can impact anyone.
