يتألف النوم أو تتكون دورة النوم من مرحلتين هما:
1. مرحلة REM Sleep) Rapid Eyes Movement Sleep)
2. مرحله NREM Sleep) Non-Rapid Eyes Movement Sleep)

مرحلة الREM Sleep هي مرحلة النوم العميق. هنا يقوم الجسم بحرق سعرات حرارية حتى أكثر من لو كنت تقرأ كتاب و أنت مستلقي على سبيل المثال.
في مرحلة النوم العميق يكون دماغك نشط جدا حتى في بعض الأحيان أكثر نشاطا من لو كنت مستيقظ !
بمأنه الطعام هو مصدر للطاقه و الدماغ يحتاج طاقة للتفكير فأن جسمك يقوم بشكل مستمر بحرق سعرات حرارية لتوفير طاقة على شكل كلوكوز لدماغك النشط للتفكير.

لهذا السبب الأشخاص المصابين بالSleep Apnea لديهم زيادة بالوزن و سمنة لأنهم لا يدخلون مرحلة النوم العميق بشكل كافي لحرق السعرات الحرارية.
لهذا عندما يبدأ مرضانا بأستخدام أجهزة الPAP التي نوصفها لهم كجزء من خطة العلاج, يبدأ المريض بملاحظة خسارة في الوزن لأن هذه اأجهزة عملت على تنظيم النوم عن طريق منع حدوث أنقطاع التنفس و بذلك سيدخل المريض في كل مراحل النوم من ضمنها مرحلة النوم العميق و التي يحدث بيها حرق السعرات الحرارية

Why A Good Night's Sleep is Great For Weight Loss?
Sleep Cycle is divided into two stages:
1. Rapid Eyes Movement Sleep ( REM Sleep)
2. Non- Rapid Eyes Movement Sleep ( NREM Sleep)

People with Sleep Apnea are deprived or don't pass through the REM Stage because of the Frequent awakenings when their breathing stops.
The REM Stage is the deep sleep stage, here you burn more calories than when you just for example lying and reading a book.
When you are in REM Sleep, your brain is highly active, sometimes more active than when you are awake.
Food is fuel and you need fuel for thoughts so during REM stage your body is continuously manufacturing glucose during sleeping hours.
That's why most of the people with Sleep Apnea have excessive weights and obesity, they don't enter the REM stage so they are not sleeping deeply enough to burn optimum calories.
when we prescribe PAP machines for our patients as a part of the treatment plane, the patient will start to note some weight loss because these PAP machines have regulated the patient sleep by preventing the apnea, thus the patient is entering all sleep stages Including the REM Stage so he/she is sleeping deeply enough to the calories to be burnt.
