Lucio Blandini, full Professor/Director at ILEK, University of Stuttgart - Managing Director and Partner, WERNER SOBEK AG, Stuttgart, presented current research and teaching results at the ILEK (Institute for Lightweight Structures and Design and Construction) of the University of Stuttgart.

His holistic approach to lightweight design and construction focuses on ways of drastically reducing consumption of natural resources as well as waste generation and hazardous emissions, in order to provide innovative and sustainable solutions in times of climate changes and resource scarcity.

The chapter presents the FiberSKIN textile facade, designed engaging the potential of the i-Mesh textile.

The four panels are made with glass and basalt fibers, two of them are sliding, thus generating a special experience of overlapping patterns and allowing the interior to be fully accessible for all kinds of events.

The fibers were laid with computerized control according to the parametric design by Lucio Blandini together with Moon-Young Jeong. The color scheme, inspired by the two constituent materials of the fibers (basalt and glass), has been laid out to enhance the metaphorical level of the design. This is more evident in the fixed panel where the basalt fibers are concentrated in the bottom part and generate a metaphorical and optical link to the ground and the earth. Meanwhile, glass fibers placed primarily at the top of the panel transmit considerably more light and are used to create a link to the sky.

Inside the article you will find interesting reflections and ideas to make the future of construction increasingly sustainable.

“How can “Contemporary Tapestries” be conceived? Artistic research or High Design?”
Alberto Fiorenzi, founder and director of i-Mesh, explains it to us in this interesting interview conducted on the occasion of the Lake Como Design Festival 2023, which was held from 16 to 24 September 2023.
“My curatorship has been very careful about this dualism. I think the collection contains both pieces of Art and Design.
They are pieces of Art when the development of the tapestry is in line with the author’s personal research. For this reason, Art is the piece by Graphic Surgery, which has always expressed themselves with the same visual language by painting urban walls. High Design is the piece by Marco Ferreri, who develops a variety of themes, each time using a different material.
The creation of a tapestry is a source of pride for our craftsmen, halfway between artisan and technologist, because only the most skilled and passionate can work on it.
Also in the production of i-Mesh, they are aware that their work serves to create visual, light, and thermal comfort, to create more livable and beautiful environments and cities. This way of working too, is Sustainability.
Soft Architecture is our strategy, the mission spoken of in the film “Softness. i-Mesh. Designing the city” produced by i-Mesh, a true Manifesto, in which architects are once again the protagonists, explaining how a better world can be created”.

“The creatives we invite to design a tapestry are Architects or Artists, and we ask them to imagine a work made of thread. This request is a challenge for us each time, as each of them “pushes” us beyond our production limits.
Very often, what we have experienced in manufacturing tapestries is applied to the surfaces we create in architecture.
Giovanna Latis’ tapestry pushed us to study how colors mix to create new ones and led us to introduce melange fibers.
And so forth. Each tapestry has its own story and making them has always taught us something.”

Marco Ferreri’s tapestries are called ‘Forte Fibra’ and have taught us how to manage the reflectance of our raw materials. Mineral fibers react to light in unexpected ways, and the way they are placed makes his tapestries something you never tire of looking at.”

“Contemporary Tapestries are our visual research laboratory. They are the paradigm of what we do on a daily basis with architects who choose to use i-Mesh. The creatives we invite to design a tapestry are Architects or Artists, and we ask them to imagine a work made of thread. This request is a challenge for us each time, as each of them “pushes” us beyond our production limits.
Very often, what we have experienced in manufacturing tapestries is applied to the surfaces we create in architecture.
One example: Ico Migliore (Migliore + Servetto) likes to create tapestries whose density is variable. Ico believes that i-Mesh is an ever- changing material because its transparency puts it into dialogue with its surroundings. The surface is therefore the protagonist, but it is part of a context in dialogue. The variable he applies to his tapestries is, therefore, the density gradient.
His work has inspired us in a very technical application. When we study architectural facades with the aim of creating comfort in interiors, our surfaces have a variable density. Such studies provide a strategy to create screens with density only in the areas where the sun’s rays directly hit the window.”

What is the meaning of the “Arazzi Contemporanei” collection and the link between it and the activity of i-Mesh?
Alberto Fiorenzi, founder and director of i-Mesh, explains it to us in this interesting interview conducted on the occasion of the Lake Como Design Festival 2023, which was held from 16 to 24 September 2023.
“To explain the link between the Tapestries and i-Mesh, we thought of an architectural installation on Villa Olmo’s façade.
The exhibition of three large panels pays homage to i-Mesh’s most monumental urban and dynamic installation to date: fifty-three thousand square meters of retractable roofing embedded in the urban fabric of Expo City in Dubai.
The three panels, discarded at the time due to minor defects, were reused for this new mission.
Adapted in size and appearance, they are a prime example of how we work at i-Mesh. We design our production to be long-lasting, and we may not need to recycle a piece of i-Mesh until 20-30 years after it is made, or it might not even be necessary depending on its usage.
This does not take away from the fact that whoever owns it may get tired of it or move and want to use it differently.
If possible, they may modify it or ask us to adapt it to the new situation.
In fact, we prefer not to recycle, but to reuse a material that is very durable. This policy helps to keep the energy cost of our product low.
The sustainability of a given material is measured in terms of the energy required to create it and to dispose of it.
We discuss these themes with the authors and involve them in the creation of the material. “

Three tapestries by Ico Migliore (Migliore + Servetto ) are exhibited in Como on the occasion of the Lake Como Design Festival .

“Shades.BW+R” is on display at San Pietro in Atrio (Via Odelaschi), while the “2BW” and “Shades.BW” is on display at the Sheraton Lake Como hotel, Via Per Cernobbio, 41°.

They are part of the "Contemporary Tapestries" collection, the edition curated by Alberto Fiorenzi who is also the founder and director of i-Mesh.
We ask Alberto Fiorenzi to explain to us the meaning of the collection and the link between it and the activity of i-Mesh:

“Increase” by Graphic Surgery is on display at the Lake Como Design Festival

San Pietro in Atrio,
Via Odelaschi, Como
Italy

“Increase”
90 x 120 cm
Carbon fiber woven with i-Mesh technology
2020

«Increase" is a stunning artwork that addresses the profound issue of density in the complexity of layering. The work is an astonishing representation of overlapping layers, where fullness merges with emptiness, and the guideline, tenacious and opaque like a carbon fiber, takes us through a fascinating passage from the smallest of signs to the complex structure. Gysbert Zijlstra and Erris Huigens, the two artists, find inspiration in the industrial and urban landscape, with a predilection for steel structures, scaffolding and construction cranes. The characterizing element that fascinates both is the temporary nature of these construction sites and their lack of premeditated aesthetics. The crane, in particular, emerges as a universal symbol of cities in constant transformation. The crane becomes a powerful symbol of progress, change and rebirth, as it represents the continuous transformation of cities and places. The density and layering that characterize the work seem to reflect the controlled chaos that envelops the evolving urban landscape. As a city grows and develops, new layers of construction are superimposed on previous layers, creating a dynamic dance between old and new, full and empty. In "Increase", this balance between opposites takes shape in a visual harmony, where carbon fiber becomes a metaphor for the strength and resilience needed to face change.

“Forte Fibra B” by Marco Ferreri is on display at the Lake Como Design Festival

San Pietro in Atrio,
Via Odelaschi, Como
Italy

“Forte Fibra B”
210 x 210 cm
Carbon fiber woven with i-Mesh technology
2014

The «Forte Fibra B» tapestry is as light as the fiber that composes it, the carbon, and as technological as the machine that manages to make it with millimeter precision. With millimeter precision, the machine spins the fibers according to a design dictated by physical performance, but that machine and those fibers are also used for aesthetic performance. Aerospace-derived fibers with a very high elastic modulus, the result of a fusion process of minerals that are then stabilized and spun, or extruded to be transformed into yarns. Glass, basalt, carbon, kevlar, zylon, technora. The lines traced in the terrestrial space overlap without intertwining, while the threads draw fluid curves, all while keeping the shape perfectly. A symphonic work of weaving, where the fibers become notes and the threads are transformed into melodies, creating a unique visual synergy. This tapestry is not only a pleasure for the eyes, but holds a surprise that goes beyond mere aesthetics. Thanks to its extraordinary features, it is able to warm the soul. Each fiber embodies the power of technical performance, the strength of innovation and the passion for art. Observing the «Forte Fibra B» tapestry, one is enraptured by a play of light and shadow, of fluid lines that seem to dance in the light. It is a sensory experience that involves the eye and the soul, as if there were a story to be read and a message to be grasped from every detail.

“Cascata/Griglia Morbida – Tribute to Cristiano Toraldo di Francia” by Tomo Ara is on display at the Lake Como Design Festival

San Pietro in Atrio,
Via Odelaschi, Como
Italy

“Cascata/Griglia Morbida – Tribute to Cristiano Toraldo di Francia”
60 x 180 cm
Carbon fiber woven with i-Mesh technology
2022

The “Cascata/Griglia morbida» tapestry was designed by Japanese architect and designer Tomo Ara as a loving tribute to Cristiano Toraldo di Francia of Superstudio, who passed away in July 2019. This tapestry bears witness to the worldwide echo of the Superstudio Avant-garde. The «Cascata/Griglia morbida» tapestry is a reinterpretation of the geometries of Superstudio's Histograms of architecture, a three-dimensional diagram, with a homogeneous and isotropic surface, a transposable grid, which thanks to some rounded surfaces passes from one plane to another of the space, crossing it with elegance and softness, a physical and mental diagram, whose grid, highlighted by the carbon thread of the i-Mesh network, frees itself from the grid to invade the space in a final act of freedom.
Tomo Ara, architect, designer and creator was born in Tokyo in 1950 and graduated in Fine Arts, Nihon University College of Art. Tomo Ara arrived in Italy in 1976 and participated in numerous architectural projects as a member of the staff of the Pietro Frenguelli Architectural Design Studio (Perugia). In 1979 he joined Superstudio and collaborated with Arch. Christian Toraldo of France. He won an award at the XVI Triennale di Milano in 1981. Since 1982 when he founded STUDIO TOMO ARA, creating a bridge between Italy and Japan, he has been involved in architecture, interior and product design.

From tomorrow until the 24th of September “Istogramma” by Cristiano Toraldo di Francia will be on display at the Lake Como Design Festival

San Pietro in Atrio,
Via Odelaschi, Como
Italy

“Istogramma”
180 x 162 cm
Glass and carbon fiber woven with i-Mesh technology
2020

“Istogramma” is a tribute to the transformation of the hard enclosure of architecture into a new digital window that connects different spaces, past and present, reducing the rigidity of the object to the soft and light texture of the transparent i-Mesh fabric. The Histograms series was born in 1968 as a reductive attitude of the function of the Superdesigner - the inventor of models with a strong emotional value, and therefore certainly a desire for consumption - to sweep away the design field from quality problems and leave available on the working table drawing pure neutral amounts of space. The physical space measured by an electronic grid, and conceptually prefigures the planet's surface, as a large spherical histogram. The internet will soon be born, a large digital tapestry that will redesign the new geography by eliminating borders. This tapestry is very important for cultural reasons because it is a bridge between Superstudio and i-Mesh, representing a tribute to the transformation of architecture into a new digital window that connects different spaces, past and present, through the soft and light texture of the fabric transparent. This concept is linked to the theme of Soft Architecture, of which i-Mesh is a spokesperson. Cristiano Toraldo di Francia himself recognized the cultural connections between i-Mesh and the innovative ideas of Superstudio and this tapestry represents the testimony.

“Prospettiva Centrale”
100 x 100 x 12 cm
Wood, acrylic and carbon fibers woven with i-Mesh technology
2018

«Prospettiva Centrale» is the figure in space. That is: it must be possible at any moment to be able to determine its image on a plane as, conversely, given the image, it must be possible at any moment to be able to trace the figure in space.
The tapestry is inspired by two other works by Alberonero:
“Altro Paesaggio”, Etna, Italy, 2017 (picture number 3). Photo: Sirio Vanelli. Courtesy RITMO.
Personal exhibition at the Ritmo Catania gallery, made in 2017 on the Etna volcano photographed by Sirio Vanelli.
The work is a perspective of fabrics, a chromatic nuance that summarizes the atmosphere of that moment and of that territory set on the southern slope of the volcano.
The environmental installation stimulated and suggested to Alberto Fiorenzi the decision/vision to involve Alberonero in the project of Arazzi Contemporanei.
«Esercizio 26» (picture number 4), part of the solo exhibition Supernaturale created by Varsi gallery in Rome in 2019. The work, 165 x 110 x 18 cm, is made with acrylic, i-Mesh and wood (as central perspective).

“Riflessioni Cielo-Mare”
160 x 270 cm
Basalt and Technora fibers woven with i-Mesh technology
2020

The figurative aspect of «Riflessioni Cielo-Mare» expresses the imagery of the maritime landscape in its chromatic variability along the day times. The tapestry is realized with
i-Mesh mineral fiber deposit technology. Different versions of the tapestry can be made, where the prevalence of yellow or gray fiber are composed differently accordingly to the time chosen. The collection is realized in small series and can be done with different chromatism using colored fibers that reflect the color variations of light on water. The inspiration is the reflections of the sun and the sky in the sea at sunset, when the colors blend together and only the golden light of the sun that has already disappeared colors the reflections on the water in a continuous iridescent movement. In the work the lines intersect and dissolve into each other, the thread is rippled by light golden veins, while the memory of the setting star is concentrated on the horizon. Reflections are the reflection on our perceptive abilities, which can over time and in relationships amplify or contract our sense of space, light and the world in general. The fibers used, like the graphic lines of the project sketches, overlap and move on the "sheet“. The scale of the tapestry brings back the human dimension, like a window onto the world from which to observe the magic of the sky merging into the sea.

During the Lake Como Design Festival which will be held in Como from 16 to 24 September, i-Mesh's intervention on the splendid eighteenth-century façade of Villa Olmo consists of three large pieces which are inspired by the large installation created for Expo 2020 Dubai.
An ideal connection stretched on the thread of i-Mesh, the story of sustainable technology invented by the Marche company focused on urban comfort, is transformed into a large banner that indicates the presence of the Lake Como Design Festival within the admirable construction designed by the architect Cantoni. The membranes designed to cover the walkways of the Expo by the architect-engineer Werner Sobek (creator of the Triple Zero principle "zero consumption, zero emissions and zero waste") are therefore inserted between the columns of the facade designed by the Ticinese architect in an area loved by Italians as well as by predominantly German tourism. The cultural cues and references multiply as always, when i-Mesh shows off itself.

From 16 to 24 September 2023, the Lake Como Design Festival renews the appointment with its selection of contemporary design, this year curated by Giovanna Massoni.
Also for this new edition, all the selected works will be exhibited during the days of the festival and sold through an online auction dedicated to the event, organized exclusively by Catawiki, already a partner of past editions.
The 2023 exhibition will be inside Villa Salazar, an eighteenth-century location with a neoclassical style open to the public for the first time.
“I like to think of contemporary design as an open catalogue, a shared and interconnected repertoire of objects and experiments, of materials and technologies that challenge climate change and the scarcity of natural resources. A dialogue between past and future, between vernacular manufacturing practices and technological dematerialisation, between organic materials and new biocomposite materials, between reuse processes and future scenarios where our waste becomes fossils. Design - which has always been a collaborative act - is today more than ever an anti-disciplinary exercise, an encyclopaedia of hybrid attitudes that combines applied or speculative research with making, through a paradigm that lets the human and non-human interact.” Giovanna Massoni.
