This two-day event brings together artistic, activist and academic framings of the life and legacy of Paul L. Robeson. The screening of a series of performance-based videos, a conversation series, a concert and a film premiere accompanied by a live sound performance make up this multifaceted convening. The program is designed to encompass two evenings of reflection and celebration of the global facing socio-political dimensions of Robeson, his vision of art as a tool for social change and the need for a critical reflection on this unsung figure within the Italian context. Civil Rights and labor activist, athlete, actor, singer and voice for change are all descriptors of this incredible historic figure. The work and research of Justin Randolph Thompson, spanning 15 years of performance and sculptural works that engage this legacy take us from Peekskill NY (Thompson’s birthplace and the site of the Peekskill Riots of 1949) to Madrid and on through Marrakech.

Last week we met Martina Bacigalupo
For a decade, Martina Bacigalupo lived and worked as a documentary photographer in the Great Lake region, in East Africa. Realizing the ambiguous role that photography played on the continent, perpetuating the one-side narrative whereby Africa is a place of misery and violence and needs the West to get out of it, she began to question the very language of visual expression. In her talk, Martina took students on a journey of realization and self-questioning about the ethics of representation and the liberating opportunities that collaborating with your photographic subjects can offer.
On the following day, students from various classe participated in a workshop with Martina in Villa Sassetti. Together, they explored a series of questions such as: How does editing impact a story? How do we edit for a magazine, a book, or an exhibition? What is the emotional frequency of an image? In the workshop students selected a set of images to create a visual story. Martina then led a critique session to discuss how those images had been selected and what impact they had.
Flynn Murtuagh: "Studying abroad at New York University Florence has genuinely heightened my academic and personal global comprehension, cross-cultural focus and interdisciplinary thinking. While the beautiful campus, thoughtful professors and staff, and opportunity to be in the historically and artistically important city of Florence all contributed to my having an extraordinary semester, the Villa La Pietra Museum was truly my high point at NYU Florence. As an art history student, having a museum on campus with collections accessible to students is not only personally thrilling but is enriched by an immersive in-person experience as well. In addition, Villa La Pietra’s identity as a house museum provides the artwork it houses with spatial and familiar context, an aid to artistic comprehension that many museums lack.
When I first arrived at NYU Florence I was unaware of Villa La Pietra and the opportunities available to students. Upon learning about their graduate-level conservation program with NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, Professional Development Opportunities for undergraduate students and student-driven exhibitions, I was eager to contribute to the museum’s mission in a meaningful way. Working with the museum’s curator, Francesca Maria Baldry, and lead conservator, Claudia Beyer, I designed a volunteer schedule for myself that allowed me to assist and learn in the textile department of the museum’s collection. As a student striving to connect my academic experiences with hands-on learning, this mentorship opportunity with industry professionals, and to gain experience working in a museum environment made this opportunity at Villa La Pietra invaluable to me. It is an experience that I will carry forward every day of my academic and professional career."

Students and faculty enjoyed the plays and seeing fellow students showcasing their talents. We’re looking forward to the next installment!
Our Global Equity Fellows organised a trip to Bologna where students learned about impact migrants have on the city on the decolonial tour of Migrant Tours Bologna led by .generation.italy . They then talked with, Eta, a Bologna native who runs an association “Il Cerchio della Libia in Via Libia” for migrants needing a place to stay or for those passing by. The trip ended with a late lunch of Eritrean Etiophian food at Restaurant Senafe and some free time in the city!
Students learned all about the history of Italian pottery and its uses in a class with .lab . Students were given the opportunity to paint their own plate following the traditional Florentine style or their own design!
NYU Florence and will be hosting a conversation series with curator and researcher Mistura Allison on December 4th and artist Samuel Baah Kortey on December 5th, in dialogue with artist and director of The Recovery Plan Justin Randolph Thompson. More info in our stories. RSVP at [email protected]

This past Saturday, NYU Florence students went to watch the Fiorentina Women’s soccer game against Como! After an amazing victory by Fiorentina, the students were able to tour Viola Park, the newly established headquarters for the Italian football club ACF Fiorentina!
NYU Florence students participated in the annual Olive Harvest. Students collected olives, ate a traditional Tuscan meal of ribollita soup and pork sausages. Afterwards, they participated in an olive oil tasting and learned about what makes a good quality olive oil. As a special perk, students who volunteered in these harvests will be receiving a bottle of olive oil!
The Cooking Club had a first session where they learned how to make pasta! Students made pasta from scratch, as well as pesto, carbonara, and tomato-vegetable sauces to top it off! All of the vegetables were picked fresh from the garden at Villa la Pietra.
Our students had a fang-tastic Halloween at Villa La Pietra! (👻🦇🧛) Celebrations ranged from costume and make-up contests to spooky tours of the Villa and pumpkin painting! Students also learned about the crucial role of pollinators in our food system. Did you know that without pollinators we wouldn’t have pumpkins, apples, or even chocolate?!
Thank you to Senti Toy for informing our LS freshman students about the next four years with NYU! Students were able to see what the next steps needed to transition from LS into GLS or transition to another school in NYU.
Great info session!
