The Guarda Archaeological Project (GAP) is a collaboration between the Município da Guarda, the University of Lisbon (Arqueologia NOVA FCSH), the University of Groningen (RUG), Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut Rome - KNIR, and the Cultuurfonds.

For the entire month of July 2024, a Lusitano-Italian-Dutch team of students and researchers will be generously hosted by the Municipality of Guarda. They are exploring at high altitudes the archaeology of ancient mountain society between the Iron age and the Roman times in the Serra da Estrela and Mondego valley (Beira Interior, Portugal). In the past, this was a very important region for mineral mining and metal exploitation, located at the fringes of the Western Mediterranean world. Through excavation, remote sensing with drones and various field survey techniques our team is currently finding new information about ancient hillforts, sanctuaries and villages in Guarda.

Best wishes to the GAP project, keep up with the good work in the hot, sunny mountains of Guarda! ☀

This summer, KNIR contributes to 'Expodemic', the second edition of the Festival delle Accademie e degli Istituti di Cultura stranieri a Roma. The festival consists of an exhibition in the Palazzo Esposizioni Roma about the history of exhibitions in Rome and that of the foreign academies and cultural institutes in Rome, both going back to the 17th century. The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Benedetti, with assistance from Francesca Campana. KNIR lent four historic posters of exhibitions that were held in our villa in Via Omero, retrieved from our special collections. The exhibition will be open until 25 August.

Secondly, the organizers initiated a poster project titled '3500 cm2: art and democracy' (after the square centimeters of the most common poster format). 18 posters have been specially designed by contemporary artists for this exhibition and are available at the collaborating institutions throughout Rome, inviting the audience to discover the rich network of foreign academies and institutes in Rome, and at the same time to enable them to become an element of the artistic panorama themselves by actively collecting these posters.
For KNIR, the poster was designed by Domenico Mangano & Marieke van Rooy. On the first occasion of their poster to be collected at KNIR, Marieke was present in Rome. She also invited KNIR guests and staff to a performance that was part of their show at Magazzino Gallery.

The Palaexpo posters are available at KNIR for free and can still be collected on July 5 and July 26, 2024, between 2 and 4 PM.

Congratulations to Maarten on behalf of the KNIR Team! 🥳

The Ted Meijer Prize is named after the ex-director of the KNIR who died in 1997. It is awarded yearly for the best (R)MA thesis or PhD thesis in the field of the humanities, in relation to Italy and Rome in particular. The prize consists of a research grant, three months free stay at KNIR, and a travel allowance.

In his thesis, Maarten Schmaal systematically evaluates the evidence for a 'Grand Bargain'-model of Roman imperialism in the fourth century BCE. Deploying a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the thesis concludes that while competition, negotiation, and cooperation among elite families (Roman and non-Roman) played an important role in the early expansion of Rome, not all elite behavior and imperial development can be explained by this model.

Winner Ted Meijerprijs 2023: Maarten Schmaal This thesis provides insight into the nature of early Roman imperialism, particularly focusing how elite lineages leveraged (imperial) state resources to further their private agendas. Professor Joanita Vroom, together with the KNIR, offered the course Byzantine Rome in September 2023.

The course, co-taught by Vroom, Letty ten Harkel and various guest lecturers, investigated the transition of the city of Rome from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, with an emphasis on cultural and socioeconomic developments. Notably the course took place in Rome. ‘We got to see a side of Rome that is not usually seen.’

Fernando Maggi has worked with dedication and care at the KNIR since September 1, 1997. In these 27 years, he has made an indelible impression on our institute, not only by keeping our spaces clean and maintaining the building and garden but also by touching the hearts of many with his warm smile, jokes, and helpfulness. Fernando officially retires on August 1, 2024.

Janet Mente has been with our institute since March 16, 1998. As the head of the library, she has taken care of our collections and assisted many researchers and students in their search for books, articles, and special resources. She never shied away from a difficult question and used her extensive knowledge and network to help everyone as best as she could. Janet officially retires on July 1, 2024.

We take the opportunity to thank Janet and Fernando for their work for the institute in these decades in which they both were such important members of our team! Many of you will be able to say goodbye to them at the 'Dag van Rome' on June 22, when both of them will be present in Amsterdam.

Following recent developments in cultural and postcolonial history, this seven-day workshop stimulates reflection on the relationship between historians and their archives. Set in Rome, a focal point in the global commerce and codification of information, and a city rich in archives, we will combine inquiries into the nature of archives with reflections on how we can make these repositories speak to us. Building on recent work by environmental historians and archeologists, we will also read the urban landscape and ask what cities as archives can tell us about the past in its many guises.

We will visit a variety of sites, such as the Vatican Library, the Antonio Gramsci and Communist Party Archives, the State Archives of Rome, the archive of the Inquisition, and other sites on the modern and premodern history of Italy.
