019 - PRATISSOLO
Two Phases Open Competition
3rd Prize
Reuse of a Primary School in Scandiano, Reggio Emilia, with a composite structure of wood and concrete. This creates a dynamic, open layout, complemented by sliding doors that triple interior spaces, adapting to various educational needs.
A generous interior courtyard connects the school building with the sport hall volume, allowing all the proposed facilities to be in constant relation with the surrounding nature.

010 - ENFILADE HOUSE
Reuse project for the Piano Nobile of a 15th-century Palazzo in the heart of the city of Bologna. The flat has undergone significant refurbishments over the centuries, resulting in incoherent interventions that have led to the loss of the quality of the existing spaces.
These pictures of the work site depict the creation of a new enfilade formed by a series of precise openings and minor demolitions, aiming to visually connect all the spaces within the house. The enfilade is an intentional breach through the Piano Nobile, with the purpose of restoring what the passage of time had eroded.

Reuse project of a Piano Nobile flat in the historical center of Bologna.
Through specific researches and investigations our team conducted on site we slowly found and unveiled a wonderful original series of terrazzo floors, paintings and decorations, all from the XV century.
These pictures from the construction sites depict the beautiful details of the existing.

016 - MAXXI HUB
Last year our team was awarded with a special mention in the international competition Grande Maxxi in Rome.
Starting from the competition brief request of a so called “tetto verde” at the top of the building, we took it as a chance to make our building more specific.
By studying the beautiful gardens of Rome and its species we decided, together with João Nunes, to plant a series of regular citrus trees on top of our building.
The dark leaves of these types of trees generate an interesting contrast with the colorful fruits, wrapping the rooftop with a dense green canopy.
Our aim was taking this request as an opportunity to bring the green roof idea further, offering a calm and detached space where to relax or enjoying an open air exhibition.

Last year our team was awarded with a special mention in the international competition Grande Maxxi in Rome.
The image shows the art restoration laboratories hosted in a lightful timber structure first floor, where natural light is controlled by external permanent metal brise soleil combined with an electrical system of movable interior curtains.
The extremely light and open feeling of the first floor counter-balances the heavier and hermetic structure of the ground floor archives.

Completing this series of three publications about our work, we share a text published on Architecture Competitions] Issue No.01
“Between Collages and Renders: Images” investigates our specific way of images production. Starting from a lack in rendering expertise we developed a method mixing collages, 3d modeling, textures, real materials and references, in order to compose and address themosprecise kind of atmosphere we considered appropriate for each project.
We took this opportunity to reflect on our working method, our references and ideas, aiming to convey possible inspiration to turn a lack of experience into a possible new language opportunity.

Our journey started as collective under the Italian word “orto”.
Meaning vegetable garden in our native language, we intended as a metaphor for an open ground of projects, ideas and contributions we carried into our current path.
On the occasion of the NIB award we received in 2019, we were pleased to release this brief interview at telling about our early days and the influence on our professional and educational path.

018 - THE RITUALS OF EATING
Together with Alice Bidorini and Beatrice Zago we proposed a temporary pavillion for the ‘23 edition of the in Logrono, Spain.
The location we chose was the beautiful Rioja’s vineyards landscape of Vina Lanciano.
The Rituals of Eating works as a scenography structure where the vineyards landscape is the protagonist.
The visitor crossing the threshold will find a rounded room with a bench, a long table, some loose stools and portable electric kitchen powered by a photovoltaic panel on top of a wooden truss.
The idea of the project is to define space of detachment, inclusion and conviviality where everybody could cook a meal and sharing with others.

002 - LANDSCAPE FORTRESS
Landscape Fortress is an early project of ortus developed for an open competition located near the village of Sagres in Portugal.
The whole intervention aimed to define a landscape landmark on top of an high cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Our idea made concrete the act of walking designing a zig zag shaped building where each side and each inclination responds in specific way to an element composing this landscape.
An internal path allows the visitor to continue the existing path getting naturally into the building. Once inside a dark corridor reveals a series of rooms where a specific element of this landscape become the protagonist: the wind, the ocean, the lighthouse, the rocks and the village of Sagres.
This project which aimed to be a landmark itself turned to be a landmark of the landscape itself.

009 - WAREHOUSE PADEL
Warehouse Padel is a reuse project proposal about a new padel sport center located inside an existing abandoned warehouse in the industrial area of the little town of Asti in the north of Italy.
The project is defined by a light metal structure with plywood planks infills. The purpose of this choice is to propose an adaptable structure allowing easy possibilities for extending, enlarging, tweaking.
The images refers to the interior dressing room spaces where we aimed to provide a sequence of spaces with different tones.
The main room where players will change their clothes is all black in order to offer a more discrete and relaxed moment, balanced by a top opaque glazing allowing natural light to pe*****te.
At the end of the corridor the shower room is located which has been conceived as a lighter bright room, cladded in very small white tiles in order to counteract the darkness of the rest of the spaces.

016 - MAXXI HUB
An ermetic rammed earth cladded ground floor as a natural plinth for the lightweight wooden and metal structures above: this was the main concept of our MAXXI Hub project nicely portrayed in this draft image by our friend Filippo Bolognese and his studio.
The nature invades and contaminates the whole ground floor cladded with rammed earth in order to exploit its low embedded carbon footprint and its natural quality of insulation and passive climatic performances.
The image focuses on the main staircase leading to the public roof through a completely different journey made of steel, Led, and wooden elements.
The ambivalent condition of the building responds to the requested program hosting all the archives on the ground floor where no daylight is needed and leaving the whole laboratories areas to the upper floors full of daylight, natural ventilation and a constant mutual relation with the city of Rome.

016 - MAXXI HUB
Ahead of an important week at the in Rome with the opening of the exhibition of the award-winning works from the Grande Maxxi competition, we are now happy to share our proposal which was awarded a special mention by the jury and will on display in Rome from monday.
Maxxi Hub imagines the extension of the Maxxi as a building with an ambivalent character: on the one hand, a hermetic and closed basement made of a concrete structure and clad with rammed earth hosting the archives and collections that require protection from natural light and on the other hand a lighter pavilion realised with a wooden structure and metal façade where the laboratories and research areas engage in a mutual visual dialogue with the city.

A ribbon embraces and unites the two floors of the building, transforming itself into an LED light band communicating to the city of Rome the daily activities and events of the new hub.
On the main facade, facing the Maxxi museum square, two iconic elements highlights the public circulation system from the square to the sculpture garden on the roof.
A slender concrete tower and an oblique public stairway separates the employers circulation from the visitor's ensuring full accessibility to all the people at any time of the day.
