IN BETWEEN // Siluetas by Ana Mendieta

Spanning performance, sculpture, film, and drawing, Ana Mendieta‘s work revolves around the body, nature, and the connections between them.

In 1973 she began to visit pre-Columbian sites in Mexico to learn more about native Central American and Caribbean religions. During this time the natural landscape took on increasing importance in her work, invoking a spirit of renewal inspired by nature and the archetype of the feminine.

Working in Iowa and Mexico, her Silueta series represent her figure into the earth from a variety of materials including flowers, tree branches, moss and fire, occasionally combined with animals’ handprints.

In her words, with the series she looked for the “universal energy which runs through everything: from insect to man, from man to spectre, from spectre to plant, from plant to galaxy”.

IN BETWEEN // The Lightning Field by artist and sculptor Walter De Maria

The Lightning Field is placed in a remote corner of the New Mexico desert.

After sticking 400 sharp metal poles vertically into the ground over an area of about 3 square kilometres, De Maria exploits their lightning-parament effect during thunderstorms by collecting and multiplying the power of lightning in the service of a grandiose light show.

Walter De Maria invites contemplation and deep interaction with the natural landscape.

He wanted “The Lightning Field” to be experienced at different times of the day and seasons as light constantly changes the appearance of the work, creating shadows and reflections that transform the visual experience. The presence of thunderstorms in the desert can also create spectacular natural spectacles, with lightning striking the poles.
