Skira è il più antico e glorioso marchio nella storia dell’editoria d’arte internazionale.
Fondata a Losanna nel 1928, Skira è il più antico e glorioso marchio nella storia dell’editoria d’arte internazionale.
«It’s always a very thin line between doing something abstract and something representational. All abstraction is in some form representation in terms of working. [...] I love abstraction: Joan Mitchell, Barnett Newman, his bold streamlined colors, his palette. Also, Mark Rothko. Although some of his works appeal to me, others don’t. I like to borrow from abstraction, figuration, portraiture, cubism, and minimalism; I think of them as different languages.»
Born 1995, Khalif Tahir Thompson is best recognized for his powerful portraiture and figuration work, which incorporates painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, and paper-making.
One of the most interesting artists on the Italian and international art scene, Nico Vascellari (born 1976) has been conducting research since his beginnings into different practices, from performance to sculpture, from installation to drawing, from video to the exploration of sound.
Through an anthropological approach, he analyses themes linked to nature and its relationship with man, ancestral phenomena and rituals, afolklore and traditions, contaminating them with an underground dimension.
"Fossils of Experience" offers an account of more than fifteen years of research by Nico Vascellari, his distinctive components (body, volume, sound), his chosen languages (sculpture and performance combined with drawings, collage, video and sound), his continuous questions on the relationship between man and nature, folklore and spirituality.
His paintings have a strong visual impact and for this reason the artist has sometimes been associated with the pop movement.
However, behind images of immediate legibility a deeper narrative is implied: Adami's images are filled with sophisticated visual metaphors and encapsulate philosophical, literary and mythological concepts, representing the evolution of European and Western thought in his work.
The exhibition "Valerio Adami. Painter of Ideas", curated by Marco Meneguzzo, is now open at Palazzo Reale Milano. A well deserved celebration for 65 years of artistic research.
The catalogue is a not-to-be-missed monography, published by Skira.
In 1931, with Jacqueline Apollinaire’s help, the young Albert Skira, at the age of 25 and at Pierre Matisse's suggestion, convinced Pablo Picasso to illustrate Publio Ovidio Nasone's Metamorphoses with thirty etchings. Printed in 145 copies, the exceptional edition is the first title of the newly founded Skira.
Ovid's Metamorphoses in 11,995 verses and fifteen books collect and re-elaborate over two hundred and fifty Greek myths, and they’ve been described as an “encyclopaedia of classical mythology”.
Centered on fifteen myths, Picasso's etchings outside the text are of a rare homogeneity, in a style of pure contours and discreet eroticism. The etchings at the head of the chapters break free from the constraints of the text and depict faces, n**e studies and a delightful lithotype of the female body (XXVII etching).
«Light is life and this is also expressed in the only sentence in the video on display: “Life is light”! For me, it is a vital element that delights the soul, which is why I strive to paint it in the most vivid way possible. [...]
I hope that when people see my lights, they will be able to clear their minds of worries and feel light-hearted and good. I want them to experience a moment of relief and delight in the painting, essentially taking a breath of fresh air!»
from Omar Hassan's conversation with Mariacristina Ferraioli about his "Exit Lights" exhibition, now open at Malpensa Airport. The catalogue will be out this Fall, published by Skira.
A powerful reflection by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) on the nature of creativity and change. Even today, it reminds us that to create something bold and new, we often must be willing to let go of something existing - no matter how hard that can be.
«My aesthetics developed not only from visual sources of inspiration like pop art, propaganda posters, album packaging, and skateboard graphics but also from my financial limitations and my desire to produce easily understood, applied, and disseminated visuals for the sake of a more democratic conversation about issues and the role of art itself.
I have always strived to invite a broader audience to art and social conversations.
My “do-it-yourself” roots persist in my ethos of empowerment and inform how I construct and produce my art using techniques and tools I began exploring as an art student, such as spray-paint-stenciling, screen printing, and collage.»
Shepard Fairey, from his statement in " OBEY. The Art of Shepard Fairey", published by Skira, catalogue of the exhibition still open at Fabbrica del Vapore, Milano.
A house, a life. Discover Giovanni Segantini through a stunning photographic book on the artist’s house in Maloja.
Maloja is a small Swiss alpine village at 1817 metres. Here stands Casa Segantini, built in 1886 and still owned by the family, which has preserved numerous old photographs, documents and original furnishings, including the famous furniture by Carlo Bugatti. Next to the Segantini family chalet there is a small wooden round building, the so-called Atelier Segantini, built in Maloja is a small Swiss alpine village at 1817 metres. This photography book edited by Diana Segantini presents the unique shots by the photographer and artist Gabriele Heidecker, who has captured the spirit of this artist’s house and the people who still live in it today.
Celebrated in the 1930s, discussed and forgotten in the post-war period, finally rediscovered today, Piero Portaluppi is an undisputed protagonist of 20th-century Italian architecture. An eclectic and agnostic protagonist, who eschewed styles and schools; the master of electric architecture, the grand bourgeois who changed the face of Milan with his designs.
Featuring a new photographic campaign by Ciro Frank Schiappa and previously unpublished essays, the volume is edited by Pietro Maranghi.
Devoted to an examination of the extensive recognition Peter Halley has received in Europe, the volume traces the history of Halley's forty years of activity in Western Europe through 100 images.
Published by Skira and Maruani Mercier Gallery, "Peter Halley. Europe" has been curated by Domitille d'Orgeval, art historian and curator, who writes a comprehensive essay of the reception of Peter Halley's work in Europe along with his on site interventions there.
«Nothing, I think, is more difficult for a true painter than to paint a rose because, before he can do so, he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted. [...] The first step towards creation is to see everything as it really is, and that demands a constant effort. To create is to express what we have within ourselves. Every creative effort comes from within. We have also to nourish our feeling, and we can do so only with materials derived from the world about us.»
A great lesson on creativity from Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 - Nice, 1954).

Towards the end of the 19th century the café was a favorite gathering place for artists and intellectuals seeking a place that was independent of official and academic circles. Above all, the café became a place to exercise free thought.
Among Parisian neighborhoods, Montmartre was the best known for its literary cafes; artists from different social and artistic backgrounds, such as Cézanne and Renoir, gathered there.

🏞 Discover François Avril’s refined and sensitive universe in this monograph compiling around a hundred of the artist’s painting.
🏙 With his coastal landscapes sculpted by the sea, frail silhouettes, soaring buildings, and isolated houses, François Avril's artistic creation is based on a stripped-down vision of the world. The rigour of his compositions is combined with a personal, contemporary, and universal poetry.

📆 The Huberty & Breyne gallery is devoting an exhibition to the artist’s latest creations. To be seen in Brussels, Place du Chatelain, from 16 May to 15 June 2024.

Quale futuro ci attende?
Con interventi di:
Lino Zagolin (ingegnere informatico, Direttore Commerciale in Scai Itec);
Giulia Bini (PHD, curatrice e responsabile del programma Enter the Hyper-Scientific all’EPFL Pavilions dell’Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale di Losanna);
Giuseppe Ragazzini (artista visivo italiano);
Stéphanie Rotelli (avvocato esperto in proprietà intellettuale e digitale, media e intrattenimento e nuove tecnologie. Cofondatrice di Cosmo Legal Group e Creative Law Alliance);

Skira editore
