🗣 Democracy in the world can only be made into a reality if human rights for everyone are respected and protected. Freedom of expression and of political association are key fundamental rights that play an essential role in protecting liberal democracies.

📃 On this occasion, we would like to share the research work by Francesca Corcella for her Master’s thesis in 2020 on “The Scandinavian countries and the populist radical right” that shares an important perspective on the freedom of expression and political association.

⚫ In Italy since the start of the year, 65 detainees have already taken their lives. A number that risks to become the highest in the last decades. While showing solidarity and support to the call by Associazione Antigone on the urgent need for reform of the prison system, we want to share the research work by Sofia Vanzan that sheds light on the need to offer adequate mental healthcare to prisoners in need.

⛓ Vulnerable detained people shall not be let alone or subjected to inhuman treatment. They shall be treated with dignity to facilitate their re-education and rehabilitation.

🏆 While it is a time to enjoy all the different competitions, it is also important to shed light on the relationship between sport and human rights. In particular, today we want to bring forward the case of the Olympic Games in China and the human rights violations happening behind the Games.

In his research, Giuseppe Scuccimarra concludes that it is still possible for big sporting events to be used as a tool for positive change. They may not be drivers for social change, but they can at least help raise awareness and concern for worldwide human rights violations. In this regard, the International Olympic Committee can have a big impact and should act upon it.

In Paris this year, the Host City Contract 2024 contains one specific obligation regarding human rights, but also focuses on anti-corruption and sustainable development standards, which obliges France to pay due respect to these topics.
