Bruno’s House is an exhibition by Salvatore Arancio that brings together a group of works – some of which are now part of the MACTEmuseum’s collection thanks to the PAC Piano per l’Arte Contemporanea – created during 2023 and inspired by suggestions and memories triggered by a visit to the Bruno Weber Park: a sculpture park built in Dietikon (Canton Zürich) by Swiss architect and artist Bruno Weber. Combining sculptures, a video and a soundscape, Arancio recomposes an imaginative journey through the architecture and presences that animate that site, where imagination is celebrated, as well as the pleasure and experimentation of art in its various forms.

The exhibition unfolds in a series of environments through the museum’s central hall and side rooms and ends in the MACTE garden, where thepermanent sculpture Voyager, was installed by the artist in September 2023.

The video “Bruno’s House”, with an original soundtrack commissioned from British musician Robin Rimbaud/Scanner marks my second collaboration with the artist. It features a jarring montage of lysergic images shot amidst the kaleidoscopic architecture of Bruno Weber Park, accompanied by a sound that introduces a dark sense of unease, shifting the visual narrative out of linear time. The result is a sequence of scenes that compose a hallucinatory journey of dreamlike visions and acid atmospheres.

Naples is the city chosen for the first stage of the new edition of “Qui, dove ci incontriamo”, a project by Galleria Tiziana Di Caro, Federica Schiavo and Laveronica.

#2024

ANDREA SALA (Como, 1976)

Andrea Sala’s artistic research, inspired by traditional aesthetics and the avantgarde movements of the 19th century, particularly in the fields of Design, Architecture and Visual Arts in general, finds fulfilment in the essentiality of forms and the use of traditional techniques applied to industrial materials, or vice versa. The choice of materials plays a central role in Sala’s practice: the artist selects them on the basis of the intrinsic peculiarities of the material, which changes during all phases of the production process. Observed closely, explored in its making, it is like a tale, composed of pieces to be put together, as enigmatic as it is evident and manifest as the history of our material culture. This attitude makes it possible to go beyond the completeness of the initial source to leave room for works increasingly ‘corrupted’ by different influences. Sala investigates the world of industrial goods, in which the function of objects is gradually lost thanks to the decontextualising effect of the artistic process. He dissects the world of things with care and obsessive scrupulousness and transforms them into a personal alphabet at the basis of a making always in search of its own reasons.

La Biblioteca (Sospensione) is part of a group of works created at the end of 2020 where the artist explores the skin of objects and spaces, metallic abstractions of a domestic environment that remind us of the familiar shape of the heater. The title of each work refers, in an almost prosaic way, to the different spaces of the house: the Living Room, the Bedroom, the Bathroom, the Rumpus Room...

National Park Blanket (2023)
National Park Blanket is realized in graphite, dry pastel and greasy tempera. The artist starts from the study of blankets that belong to the history of different cultures.

ITALO ZUFFI
(Imola, 1969)

Italo Zuffi is a visual artist mainly working with sculpture, performance, and writing. The thematic cores expressed in his works are space/architecture; competition (as the relationship between centers of power and the individual body); trembling (in works that declare conditions related to uncertainty, defect, fragility and distance); and rustic faith.

Manager a passeggio (Vicenza) is the ceramic reproduction (based on photos and relief) of the external portion of a building in the center of Vicenza. It is part of a series of similar works based on buildings in some other cities (Milan and Utrecht). Zuffi imagined a “respectable” person (a manager) making a micro-act of vandalism and a compositional one at the same time. The work therefore contains the recording of the rapid gesture of the hand pressing chewed chewing gum (also made of ceramic), to express minimal aggression towards the architecture.

PATRICK TUTTOFUOCO
(Milano, 1974)

Patrick Tuttofuoco’s practice is conceived as a dialogue between individuals and their ability to transform the environment they inhabit, by exploring notions of community and social integration in order to combine immediate sensorial allure with the power to trigger profound theoretical responses. Tuttofuoco melds Modernism and Pop; he presses figuration into abstraction, using man as the paradigm of existence, as the matrix and measuring unit of reality. From this interpretative and cognitive process, infinite versions of man and the context of his existence are produced, from which shapes able to animate the sculptures are generated. Surrender the Eyes: two joined hands that open in a gesture of tenderness, of mutual abandonment in a suspended time that belongs to the sphere of “feeling” which excludes the possibility of “seeing”, of being distracted by the images, as the title also suggests. In this sculpture, made of pink Portuguese marble, there is all the artist’s urgency to consider art as the only possible space that can restore what is elusive and converges in the complexity of experience. -
Patrick Tuttofuoco Surrender the Eyes (drawings) (2024), invites us to abandon the sense of sight in the dialogue with the work of art and an indication to inhabit the energetic field traced by the works, rather than to look at them. In these drawings, the eyes are cut out from the face and deprived of their function.

MICHAEL BAUER
(Erkelenz, Germania, 1973)

The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings he’s become known for. Says Bauer of his process, “I will say, especially in paintings, there is always a figurative sense behind it. I look at figures and I look at inventions of f igures. But then of course once you paint, it jumps back and forth between something that could be a landscape but is also certain color arrangements. So, you’re constantly changing back in the way you look at it and in the way you work. It goes both ways.” In Michael Bauer’s paintings the eye and mind of the viewer work together to distinguish and reconstruct hidden shapes: hands, feet, faces, but also objects such as masks, boots, gloves, tubes.

ANDREA ROMANO
(Milano, 1984)

“My work consists in the combination and layering of different media and languages, as if to prevent a univocal definition of work and force the margins of representation. My research is aimed at the relationship between the private dimension and the collective sphere by measuring personal references and experiences with what we call art, its tradition, its possible role, and the values we commonly attribute to it.” - Andrea Romano Cast Of Pillow is a series of photographic works (made with the collaboration of Delfino Sisto Legnani) describing the physical interactions of some artist’s friends with two polyurethane sculptures, depicting the mold of a pillow, during their own creation process. The series, in addition to translating the theme of contact into visual qualities, stages specific ways of creating images to tell the story of the two sculptures destined to crumble in the time. “[…] Of the image sequence shot what remained are only a series of closeups of a process, hands touching and examining, exploring and hugging tightly an object that is in truth nothing but the abstract simulacrum of itself. Almost as American literature fragments from the ‘90s – “to cast an eye”, “losing our way in the description of a corner” – the details composing the series appear as synthetic images of a narrative where are gathered and thickened from one hand possible feelings, on the other icy atmospheres referable at the simple machinery of a contact or related to the presentation of an object.” - Francesco Garutti

ITALIA 70 – I NUOVI MOSTRI
(THE NEW MONSTERS)
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni
FONDAZIONE NICOLA TRUSSARDI

once again emblazons the streets of Milan, this time with works by seventy artists for “ITALIA 70 – I NUOVI MOSTRI,”, curated by Massimiliano Gioni. The seventy artists have each been invited by the Foundation to create a new work or choose a particular image of theirs to be multiplied on hundreds of posters. The public poster campaign takes over the streets and squares and involve both locals and visitors in a “treasure hunt” of sorts from one end of the city to the other—drawing a new map of Milan from the Monumental Cemetery and old city center to CityLife and Porta Romana.

Together, the posters of “ITALIA 70 – I NUOVI MOSTRI” make up a temporary collection of art en plein air: a metropolitan museum camouflaged among the billboard advertisements and reflecting the desires and anxieties of Italy today.

MICHAEL BAUER

“… (it)  might be a bad trip at times but someone is definitely holding our hand,
helping us face both friendly fellas and the ever transforming orcs and ogres,
guiding us from cave to cave and garden to garden, gentle sanctuaries where we can rest and restore, before we step into the next world within worlds, moonstruck, to find our proximate opponent, or dancing partner, or some half-creature that’ll accompany us for a few steps, as we set our eyes on the radiating path that meanders through it all,
knowing it’s going to be fine.”
(Stefanie Popp, Köln, February 2020

Michael Bauer was born in Erkelenz, 1973; lives and works in New York.
Bauer collaborated with Charlie Hammond and Raynes Birkbeck and is a member of the experimental music group Ylmaz House Band ( with Robert Kraiss and Florian Gass ) and TB5 ( with Steve Panovich,Nickolaus Typaldos).

Quotes by Svenja Deininger is accompained by a powerful text by Davide Ferri: “These works thus have articulated surfaces that emerge from the combination of shapes produced by the curves and shaping of the stretcher and color fields that may either repeat or disarticulate the shapes, varying them. They are divided into areas with perimeters marked by a line that may thicken, narrow, or sink into the support as if cleaving or cutting it (the contours of these areas may recall details of reality and its particulars, if but vaguely); they involve a close range of tones capable of reciprocal relay within individual paintings and between different paintings in the sequence.”
