Have you ever wondered why composites are such successful materials within aerospace and racing sports? It is because they have outstanding mechanical properties and they come together with such a lightness that cannot be rivalled by other materials. Nowadays there are several structural (not only!!) applications that can benefit from an update of traditional design through the introduction of innovative materials. From eco-friendly wind turbines to oil pipelines, from city car chassis to sewage systems, lightweight tanks, even musical instruments!! But what will happen to a composite when exposed to the environment for decades, especially in the presence of harsh agents? Engineers need to first verify the durability and reliability of such materials before entrusting them to critical applications. To ease this validation process, our Early Stage Researchers Silviu and Matteo are investigating how to improve testing methodologies when accelerated ageing on composites is needed to understand their long-term behaviour in an operative environment. At the same time, Cristian is developing innovative embedded sensors for real-time monitoring of the health of these components. Fancy finding out more?
