A face mask that is possessive with its wearer, a security camera that gets offended if you don’t greet it, a speaker that wants to be cuddled, a plug that refuses overconsumption. What do these devices have in common and what purposes do they have? This small exhibit I curated for reflects the work done by my students in the last 5 years, where we looked at objects beyond the lenses of commercial design, and towards those of the mis-functional, the uncanny, the ambiguous, the adversarial. -BehaviouralThings is on display at building 4, in Dubai Design District, until the end of the June.

About

Gionata Gatto (1982) is an Italian designer, living and working between Venice, Dubai and Rotterdam. After a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from IUAV University of Venice, he continued his studies with a master at Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 2009 and opening his own studio. In 2019 he obtained a PhD in Design from the University of Loughborough, UK.

A continuous experimentation with materials and production processes, mediated by the use of emerging technologies, are fundamental aspects motivating his research praxis. Winding between collaboration of different research areas, Gionata’s work emerge as a result of a participatory and speculative research method, to breed a territory of transdisciplinary synergy. From the active phase, he derives series of artefacts and installations that perform as perceptual bridges to generate -through the instruments of the present- visions about speculative future scenarios.

In 2019, Gionata joined the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) as Assistant Professor, to coordinate the concentration of Product Design and contribute to the development of the school’s curriculum.
