What is ?

, also known as , is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

In 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger of the U.S. Army arrived in Galveston, Texas - two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed - to issue General Order No. 3, proclaiming all enslaved African Americans were free.

Black Union soldiers traveled to plantations throughout Texas to ensure all enslaved persons knew they were now . Those persons rejoiced in the streets, in a celebration that continues annually to this day.

The celebrations that followed the reading of the Proclamation began a tradition that has lasted over 155 years and continues now as a federal holiday, and a day to forging tighter bonds, partnerships & greater understanding.
