GOLF DAY FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER - LAST FEW SPACES LEFT!
A huge thank you to Appleby Jersey for their sponsorship of our 2024 Golf Day. Managing Partner James Gaudin says:
“We greatly admire and appreciate the incredible work FNHC does for islanders in making Jersey a better place, and are keen to support it, as one of our chosen charities, in any way we can. We are delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor its golf day, having already sponsored the FNHC Colour Festival in May.
Not only do we enter a golf team on the day but Appleby colleagues will also be out and about helping in whatever way we can as we recognise that a little bit of our time and hands on support can make a big difference and help raise more awareness and funds.
We’re looking forward to being a part of this fantastic charity event and catching up with fellow golfers, friends and clients.”

With a case of Measles confirmed in Jersey we're encouraging Islanders to check their vaccination status and be aware of symptoms.
Symptoms of measles include:
⏺ cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough
⏺ sore, red eyes that may be sensitive to light
⏺ a high temperature (fever)
⏺ a red-brown blotchy rash will appear after a few days. This usually starts on the head or upper neck.
Check you and your loved ones have had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine - you need both does to get full protection. Contact the Childhood Immunisation Team on 01534 443741 to check your vaccination status.

FNHC would like to express their grateful thanks to the Association of Jersey Charities and CI Lottery Fund for their award of a grant which has assisted the charity to purchase and implement an electronic HR management system.
Since the ‘People First’ system went live in January 2024, it has enabled the organisation to replace and improve a number of HR processes that were previously paper-based, thereby improving efficiency, accuracy of workforce data reporting and reducing the costs of paper and printing.
Each member of staff now has access to their own individual profile, where they can update personal details, request annual leave and meetings and receive notifications when documents such as DBS certificates are due for renewal. Employee engagement has been enhanced due to the increased autonomy and empowerment each individual now has. Access to the internal news feed live on the new system means all staff can keep up to date and respond to relevant news from the organisation, enhancing employee involvement and wellbeing and promoting a connected workforce.

SAFETY IN ACTION
Our final feature on the work of Child Accident Prevention Jersey focuses on the annual ‘Safety In Action’ event at the Highlands College campus, with over 1,000 Year 5 students attending each July.
They have the opportunity to meet Safety Sam and visit six fast, fun and interactive workshops covering Fire Prevention, Kitchen Safety, First Aid, Water Safety, Road Safety and Outdoor Safety. Each workshops provides important safety messages, information and life skills to keep children, their family and friends safe.
This event is supported by CAPJ’s partner organisations including the uniformed services, local businesses, charitable and voluntary organisations.
It's IBCLC Appreciation Day!
As well as the start of World Breastfeeding Week, today is also IBCLC Appreciation Day! Debra Hennessy is our International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and in her role she offers the specialised clinical experience, education, and commitment to address everything from latching to supply issues, making those crucial early hours and weeks of parenthood healthier and happier for new families.
WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 1st - 7th August

SAFETY SAM COMIC TALKS
Every year, CAPJ co-ordinator Mandy visits Year 2 and Year 3 classes to deliver Safety Sam comics and talk about the safety messages they contain. These talks are done once in Year 2 and again in Year 3. The content of the comics changes regularly to reflect local unintentional injury data and are adapted to ensure they are age appropriate and relevant to children in that year group.
This year’s comics feature Beach Safety, Home Safety, Helmet Safety and Road Safety, how to contact the Emergency Services and what to do in the event of a fire at home. Having this information gives the children the opportunity to think about how they would deal with a situation, hopefully before it happens, thus reducing the risk of injury.
'MAKE THE CALL'
Another of CAPJ’s important campaigns is ‘Make The Call’ and this assembly is offered to every school with a Key Stage 2 group. It has been developed to help educate children about the importance of knowing how to make an appropriate and effective 999 call.
‘Make the Call’ was first delivered to schools in 2017 and the sessions are always well received by both students and their teachers.
SPEAK DOG AND STAY SAFE
'Speak Dog and Stay Safe' is a Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ) campaign designed to teach young children about how to behave around dogs and recognise when dogs are unhappy. Dog behaviourists and dog trainers have worked with CAPJ to develop this campaign.
This campaign is offered to every primary school year 1 class across Jersey and is delivered by Mandy our CAPJ Co-ordinator, working with FNHC colleagues.

We would like to introduce Mandy Le Tensorer, who is the Co-ordinator for Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ). Here she explains how she came to be in her current role:
“After gaining my NNEB qualification I worked in various roles before joining FNHC in 2003 as a Community Nursery Nurse. I quickly became involved in supporting some of the Child Accident Prevention campaigns that were running at that time. When the role of CAPJ co-ordinator came up I was thrilled to be offered the post and have now been in the role for 10 years”
Mandy also told us what she loves most about her role:
“I love being in schools and meeting all the children. It’s a great feeling knowing that the information we have delivered will help to keep them safe for years to come. I also really enjoy the opportunity to develop new campaigns and working with CAPJ partners, appreciating different priorities and limitations. It a great thing to have so many people around the table all there to help keep children safe”.
JILLS Leg Lounge will be taking August off to elevate and rest its legs! Sessions will restart on Wednesday 11th September at Wholly Ground Café, St Marks Church.
Over the next week, we will be featuring the work of Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ).
CAPJ is part of Family Nursing & Home Care (FNHC) and is funded through charitable donations. Working together with a number of other organisations as a partnership, the aim is to keep children in Jersey safe from unintentional injury.
CAPJ provides education to children up to 12 years of age and advice to parents, carers, child care educators and anyone who may need advice of information about keeping children safe.
CAPJ’s website has lots of information, including videos, interactive games and safety advice for children and adults www.cap.je

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to our feedback event earlier this week at the Channel Islands Co-operative Grande Marche, St Helier, taking time out to chat to our staff and complete our survey. Some of you gave us suggestions and ideas for possible future improvements and we also received lots of lovely comments about our services such as:
"Lovely service"
"They were brilliant"
"Worth their weight in gold"
All your feedback is valued and will help us to continually develop and improve services for islanders.
THANK YOU!
We would like to express our thanks to the Condor Ferries Community Fund for their recent grant which will enable us to purchase a toe pressure Doppler sensor. This equipment will be used by our Tissue Viability team as an aid to earlier diagnosis of Peripheral Artery Disease, allowing patients to be put on the right treatment pathway sooner, thus improving their care and outcomes.
Join us on Thursday 1 August to meet the Island's Breastfeeding Specialist Health Visitor and Infant Feeding Specialist Midwife at:
📍The Boundary, St Saviour, 9am-12pm
📍The Portelet Inn, St Brelade, 2:30pm-5pm
New and returning breastfeeding mums will be able to get information, advice, support and together we can celebrate .
A community organised breastfeeding friendly picnic will also be held on Saturday 3 August, at Howard Davis Park, 11am-1:30pm. Mums, dads, children, and extended family are all welcome.

We are delighted to announce that Debra Hennessy, Health Visitor and BFI Lead with Family Nursing & Home Care, has recently attained accreditation as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE).
In order to gain the qualification, which is valid for five years, Debra was required to complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of lactation-specific clinical practice, undertake 95 hours of lactation-specific education and pass the IBCLC examination.
As the only current lactation consultant in Jersey, Debra explained how having this accreditation will impact her practice and support for new parents:
“The health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby are now widely recognised and mothers feeding their babies breastmilk gives children the best possible start in terms of health and development. The advantage of being an IBCLC and working for a charity like FNHC, is that all mothers who need help with breastfeeding will have access to high quality evidence based information and support that is recognised globally as the gold standard of care, and women will no longer have to pay for and access this service from off island”.
Mandy our CAPJ co-ordinator is being kept busy - lots going on up at the Highlands College campus with Safety In Action in full swing!!!
