We gather on April 14, 2024 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts to honour the life and legacy of Brian Stamer Heap, a man whose name will forever be intertwined with the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture and the transformative power of the arts. As we bid farewell to a visionary director, esteemed educator, and beloved colleague, we reflect on the profound impact he has had on countless lives.

Brian’s journey began in the United Kingdom, but it was in Jamaica that he found his true calling. With a passion for theatre that knew no bounds, he immersed himself in the vibrant cultural landscape of the island, becoming a driving force behind its theatrical renaissance. His directorial prowess was matched only by his deep understanding of Jamaican life and his unwavering commitment to telling its stories with authenticity and grace. But Brian was more than just a director — he was a mentor, a friend and a champion of inclusivity in the arts. His dedication to the arts and Jamaican culture was limitless and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the countless minds he inspired. From his days at St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College to his tenure at the University of the West Indies, Brian’s impact on generations of artists and thinkers cannot be overstated. As we mourn the loss of a true icon, let us also celebrate the remarkable life of Brian Stamer Heap. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever linger in the halls of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Brian. Your legacy will endure for generations to come.
