What an Honor and a Dream to be part of the Jordan Delegation at the68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the UN's largest annual gathering on gender equality and women's empowerment. This year's theme. “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.

Her Excellency Wafa Bani Mostafa, Minister of Social Development led the delegation with value and shared the achievements of her leadership at multiple sessions. Jordan Shined at the United Nations!.

How to build a world of global understanding, compassion and empathy is to educate through travel, storytelling and innovation with my experience in Travel in Jordan.

A group of 16 K–8 educators visited the ACOR center in July as part of their month-long Fulbright-Hays Country Seminar in Jordan, which was hosted by the Binational Fulbright Commission in Jordan. Focused on refugee and migration issues, the seminar provided opportunities for the participants to develop curriculum modules for their students in the United States based on their experiences and knowledge gained in Jordan. Jehad Haron, associate director for projects, gave an overview of the heritage and history of Jordan and ACOR’s work here and addressed the key question of how migration has shaped and contributed to the country and the region.

The group received a tour of ACOR facilities and residences and visited Khirbet Salameh, the archaeological site next to the center. The 16 teachers and myself shared an informative and impressive visit by Jehad Haron and Zovi Mananian.

The UN Genocide Convention lists five acts that fall under its definition. Israel is currently perpetrating three of these in Gaza:

“1. Killing members of the group. 2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group. 3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.” The Israeli Air Force, by its own account, has so far dropped more than 6,000 bombs on Gaza, which is one of the most densely populated areas in the world—almost as many bombs as the US dropped on all of Afghanistan during record-breaking years of its war there. Human Rights Watch has confirmed that the weapons used included phosphorous bombs, which set fire to bodies and buildings, creating flames that aren’t extinguished on contact with water. This demonstrates clearly what Gallant means by “act accordingly”: not targeting individual Hamas militants, as Israel claims, but unleashing deadly violence against Palestinians in Gaza “as such,” in the language of the UN Genocide Convention. Israel has also intensified its 16-year siege of Gaza—the longest in modern history, in clear violation of international humanitarian law—to a “complete siege,” in Gallant’s words. This turn of phrase that explicitly indexes a plan to bring the siege to its final destination of systematic destruction of Palestinians and Palestinian society in Gaza, by killing them, starving them, cutting off their water supplies, and bombing their hospitals.

Bethlehem usually comes alive at Christmas. Not this year. In the Holy Land, celebrations have been canceled: no parades, no bazaars, no public tree lightings. In Jordan, where Jesus was baptized, our Christian community has chosen to do the same.

In a Bethlehem church adapted its nativity scene, placing the infant Jesus among the rubble of a bombed-out building. It is a reflection of the story playing out on screens everywhere: the horrific images of the destruction of Gaza, and especially, its bloodied and broken children.

In just over two months, Israel has turned Gaza into a hellscape. Almost 20,000 dead. At least 8,000 are children — more than the death tolls of Pearl Harbor, the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina combined.
