July is a very special month for BEOWULF as we turn 1! 🎂

When we set out to launch BEOWULF in Europe a year ago it was of course a very particular time in everyone’s life all around the world, as humanity was fighting for a healthier but also uncertain tomorrow in the midst of continuous lockdowns against the pandemic. Working under such extraordinary circumstances, we felt more and more drawn to going ahead with our ideas and projects.

Proud of all we have achieved, in just one year we had our first exhibition in Zürich, published our first art book, collaborated with ECLIPSE, the 7th Athens Biennale in support of artist Navine G. Khan-Dossos and her team together with the Ίδρυμα Ωνάση / Onassis Foundation in Athens, and set out to back a year-long research residency at Casa Estudio Leonora Carrington UAM in Mexico (more on the latter very soon!), proving that art patronage is achievable at any level.

We are really thankful to everyone who showed active engagement and believed in our dream of creating an innovative, multifaceted art catalyzer dedicated to conceive, commission and promote contemporary cultural narratives for the rising generation of artists, curators and collectors alike. The best is yet to come as we are beyond excited for our 2023 programme!

Special shoutout to our talented, growing A1 team. Without you none of this would have been possible! Valeria Diaz Granada, Xanthi Skoulariki, Thomas Rhodes, Raphaëlle Boudry and Jean David Dubos.

And, this is only the beginning! We are geared towards intelligent projects that matter as we deliver notable narrative, quality and ex*****on. Here at BEOWULF, we are

Last month, the incredible Villa de Sein by the Rietberg museum in Zurich, housed our exhibition 'Louise Bourgeois x Dimitris Yeros, an Unseen Friendship', proving to be nothing short of an outstanding setting for our photography display.

We wish to thank Kay and Karin Hofmann Hunkeler, Beatrix Németh and Beda Bischof for believing in the project, the overall organizational support and for welcoming BEOWULF to Villa de Sein during the Zurich Art Weekend and Art Basel fair.

Onwards to our next exhibition in Switzerland where our European HQ is. True to our spirit, we promise a fresh exhibition location 🇨🇭 for 2023!

« In the summer of 2000, at the very dawn of the 21st century, a new friendship was in the making.

At the age 89, Louise Bourgeois had already earned the respect and acclaim of the art world when she opened the doors of her house to Dimitris Yeros, a Greek artist and photographer from the old continent. Not wasting any time, this day was the first of many that Yeros spent photographing Bourgeois.

When Yeros’ camera with his uncompromising gaze captured the artist in her raw essence, this fruitful encounter between the two of them grew into a story of love and friendship. »

Are you in Zürich this week-end ? Step inside the serenity of our 20th century fin de siècle photography exhibition “Louise Bourgeois x Dimitris Yeros, an Unseen Friendship”.

« There are some types of friendships that are easier and more widely represented and some others that are generally overlooked, such being the soft, simply joyous friendships undecorated by drama or flamboyance, the quiet yet unlikely friendships. There are also some others that are woven by humanity and celebrate the understanding that posterity is made out of collected moments. This can often be said for the friendship of the artists and in extension, the exhibition ‘Louise Bourgeois x Dimitris Yeros: an Unseen Friendship’ examines and elegantly dissects exactly that. » Valeria Diaz Granada and Xanthi Skoulariki, BEOWULF

The display presents 29 unique portrait photographs of Louise Bourgeois taken by Dimitris Yeros, her friend and fellow artist-photographer. It will run up to the 19th of June at Villa de Sein, a private residence in a leafy neighborhood of Zürich by the Rietberg museum.

The exhibition will be open tomorrow from 3pm to 6pm.

For more information or to book a visit please write to [email protected]

The exhibition is accompanied by a bespoke publication that has received the support of The Easton Foundation.

“Have you brought me something to look at?”
Louise Bourgeois asked Dimitris Yeros during a visit of his on the 15th of May, 2010, the day that was to be their last encounter.

“It was on Saturday, May 15th, 2010, at 6pm, when I met Louise for the last time. I found her seated in the same old chair, the one loaded with cushions for added height and comfort, and her legs were covered with the characteristic red blanket she was using at the time. The room was almost dark, lit only by a couple of ancient and wrecked table lamps. Nothing had changed in all those years, including the stools the guests would sit on at the Sunday Salons — these too remained in their very same spots. Louise also remained the same. In the last five years or so, it was impossible to see any noticeable change in her appearance or in her manner, and she got me thinking that indeed she had cheated time and that she would carry on in this way for a long time.”

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was a French-American artist best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art. She explored a variety of themes over the course of her long career including family, sexuality and the body, as well as death and the unconscious. These themes connect to events from her childhood, a creative process that she considered to be therapeutic.

Opening on 9 June,we are presenting in Zürich the exhibition ‘Louise Bourgeois x Dimitris Yeros: an Unseen Friendship’, a series of 29 unique photographs of Louise Bourgeois at home shot by her friend and fellow artist Dimitris Yeros.

For our founder Valeria Diaz Granada, it is Louise Bourgeois drawings and sculptures:
“I visited Louise Bourgeois’ house and studio in Chelsea, New York. Besides being fascinated by the home, I was deeply moved by the works and studio. It was the encounter of the person behind the artist.”

We are pleased to present the exhibition ‘Louise Bourgeois x Dimitris Yeros: an Unseen Friendship’, opening in Zürich on the 9th of June.
The exhibition is centered around a series of unique photographs of Louise Bourgeois as shot by her dear friend and fellow artist Dimitris Yeros at her home on 347 West 20th Street, New York, in the period 2000-2008. The exhibition which will take place at a private residence in Zürich, is bringing to light for the first time the complete series of photographs which is co-signed by the two artists.

“The room was almost dark, lit by the same worn-out white reading lamp by her side. In the room, in all the years I had been visiting her, I had not seen anything change. Everything in it was old, worn and inexpensive. The only thing of value was her presence.” Dimitris Yeros

Dimitris Yeros (b.1948) is a Greek artist and photographer of international acclaim and one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work is found in many museums worldwide, such as Tate, Getty, ICP - International Center of Photography , Maison Européenne de la Photographie, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Kunstmuseum Bochum, Εθνική Πινακοθήκη - Μουσείο Αλεξάνδρου Σούτσου / National Gallery Nasjonalmuseet and elsewhere.

On the 28th of November, we witnessed the making of over 200 artworks during the Final Act of Ta Nea Xysta. The sizable mural that became a landmark work of ECLIPSE, the 7th Athens Biennale, was elegantly and consciously taken down and hand sewn into domestic size panels. Each work got labeled and signed by the artist on the spot who was present and involved in every step of the process. This activist gesture spoke volumes to the public that queued all day so as to be gifted a fragment of the mural of Navine G. Khan-Dossos. Perceived as a long-performance, the mural's life started in the hot days of early September and came to a full circle three months later. Raising issues on art dissemination, accessibility, fairness ,community and ecology, the event represented the ethos with which the mural was conceived and created as well as it extended the intricate conversation of building better futures via a confident yet simple decision: art for all.

It was early September when Navine G. Khan-Dossos stepped in Santarosa square in the heart of Athens, to start the making of Ta Nea Xysta, an ambitious mural she has been researching and developing for several years. Joined by Maria, Alexandra and Stephanie, the team worked daily and continuously for three weeks, until the unveiling of the work that was completed on the day of the opening of ECLIPSE, the 7th Athens Biennale. From September to today, Ta Nea Xysta has become an iconic and much loved work.
With the closing of the exhibition on Sunday 28 November, the mural will extend its life as the public will be able to take away panels. In the words of Omsk Social Club, co-curator of ECLIPSE "The stewardship of what comes after is not only one of aesthetics but one of intergenerational and multidirectional world building. The gesture of dismantling is not one of destruction but one of decentralization, creating space for another possibility: plurality".

The live event is taking place from 11am-3pm, 28 November on Santarosa square, Athens. Tha Nea Xysta: the Final Act is part of the live events of the closing weekend of ECLIPSE. The event is realised jointly with the Athens Biennale.

This Sunday, 28 November from 11-3pm (EET), the Final Act of Ta Nea Xysta is taking place as part of the finissage live events of ECLIPSE, the 7th Athens Biennale. The now iconic mural installed on Santaroza square back in September, will be transformed and in the presence and direction of the artist, a limited number of panels will be cut, numbered and given to the attending public.

A gesture of 'decentralisation, not of destruction' the mural will poignantly continue its life cycle to infinity. The event is jointly organized by Beowulf and the Athens Biennale.

When ECLIPSE opened to the public on the 24th of September, Ta Nea Xysta was almost completed. What remained was the finishing touches, and the mural was finished in a performative, intimate experience there for all to watch. Like an open air studio of public access, the making of the mural as a work in progress, drew attention and curiosity, as well as opened up the practical aspects of creativity to the visitor of the biennale. This 'involvement', acted as a prelude to the interactive direction of the exhibition, since one enters the main building through the mural, an add-on façade to a building sealed and abandoned for over thirty years. Previously housing the High Court of Athens, the building's former use is symbolically represented on Ta Nea Xysta in the form of a scale, the universal symbol for Justice.

The Myth of Survival by Rui Matsunaga 20/09/2021

“The exhibition title points to the links between ‘myths’ and ‘survival’. Survival itself is something of a myth, as we live in a world in which famine, plague and war have not been solved. Meanwhile, we need myths for survival.”

Currently on view in London at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, a new solo exhibition titled “The Myth of Survival” by Japanese artist Rui Matsunaga, open to the public from 10th of September until 26th of November, 2021.

Combining a western Christian discourse with her Japanese cultural background, artist Rui Matsunaga concentrates on the concept of to portray the spirituality of every existing creature, without placing humans at the centre of her works. The characters that Matsunaga depicts become of nature and humans, that shall encourage us to consider our place in relation to our surroundings and to the ongoing world crisis, and to ponder what kind of future humanity will face hereafter.
