On September 10, 2024, Consul General Maruyama conferred on Dr. David Michael Malone, former Rector of the United Nations University,the decoration of Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun — Japan’s highest honour for foreign nationals. The ceremony was part of the 2023 Spring Conferment of Decoration on Foreign Nationals.
Dr. Malone, who served as Rector of the United Nations University from 2013 to 2023, made significant contributions to the expansion of the United Nations University’s research networks and graduate programs, as well as to the development of Japanese youth playing active roles on the international stage.
During the ceremony, Consul General Maruyama delivered a congratulatory address before formally conferring the Patent of the Decoration and the Order upon Dr. Malone. This was followed by Dr. Malone’s acceptance speech.
