The storm Shanshan, which has brought record rainfall to wide areas, weakened from a typhoon to a tropical depression around noon on Sunday. As warm and moist air continues to flow in, localized downpours with thunder are possible in the Tokai, Kinki and Kanto regions through Monday. The Meteorological Agency is calling on people to be on heightened alert for landslides and urging caution against flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning strikes and violent gusts, including tornadoes. Landslide alerts are in effect in parts of Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Saitama Prefectures. The operator of the Tokaido Shinkansen, linking Tokyo and Osaka, suspended train runs between Mishima and Nagoya stations for all of Sunday. It also says services between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka stations are significantly reduced. The Sanyo Shinkansen, linking Osaka and Fukuoka, has been running with services reduced from the first train on Sunday. The operator says it will run as usual starting with the first train scheduled for Monday. Check your plans before you travel, exercise caution if you are in an affected area and follow instructions issued by local authorities. 🫘Minazuki - a sweet June custom in Kyoto🧊

Many customs in Kyoto are related to its food culture.
Among them, minazuki - a triangular dessert made of uiro (sweetened steamed rice cake) with azuki beans on top is particularly well-known.
Since a long time ago, on June 30th the people of Kyoto would eat it in order to dispel bad luck.
Today too, it is highly popular, and every Japanese sweets shop in the city prepares it for this occasion.

How come it garnered this popularity and why is eating it considered a good luck charm?
The answer to that question lies in the old rituals of nobles and commoners right around the middle of the year, during the hot ending of June.
