The origin of this clan is associated with the descendants of a sacrificial girl called Chesong’ony. It is said that Kipsigis had gathered to offer the girl as a sacrifice to god of rain (ilet) when the girl suitor killed the rain god. He threw his sword and chopped the rain god into two, took away the girl and married her. The name Barkesa means kill in the course of prayer which he found as a result of his union with chesong’ony. The clan’s totem is red ants while the war division is Kipkaige.
