Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot extended a warm welcome to the 2024 first years' students and emphasized the institution's commitment to fostering both intellectual and personal growth. He highlighted the university's renowned faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and diverse academic programs. "You have made an excellent choice in selecting the University of Eldoret for your higher education," Prof. Cheruiyot stated. "We are dedicated to providing you with the resources and support necessary to excel in your studies and achieve your academic goals."
The Vice Chancellor encouraged the students to embrace the opportunities offered by the university, engage in research, participate in discussions and develop a strong reading habit. "Reading is the cornerstone of academic success," he emphasized. "The more you read, the more you learn, and the better equipped you will be to contribute meaningfully to society."
Prof. Cheruiyot also emphasized the importance of social growth and encouraged the students to engage with their peers, participate in extracurricular activities and immerse themselves in the university's diverse culture. Selina Mwao, Charles Omondi, and Ebenexer Akhonga, students from the School of Science, participated in the 2024 Kenya National Worldskills Competitions at the Kenya School of TVET in Nairobi. The event which saw over 170 students from universities and technical training colleges compete in over 17 skill areas including Mobile Applications Development and IT Network Systems Administration where students from the University of Eldoret participated. Selina Mwao was the 1st runner-up position (Position 2) in the Mobile Applications Development category, while Charles Omondi was the 2nd runner-up in the same category. This gives our students the opportunity to advance to the regional competitions in 2025, subject to the criteria that will be established by the organizing committee.

The University of Eldoret celebrates the recognition of Dr. Frank Masese during the Inaugural National Outstanding Research Awards (NORA) organized by National Research Fund during the Kenya National Research Festival 2024 held on 23rd August, 2024: “Celebrating Academic Excellence and Collaboration”
The award is a special recognition for Young Researchers under the Category on Physical Sciences, Technology and Innovation. This prestigious recognition is a testament not only to Dr. Masese’s work but also to the unwavering support of our university and its leadership. The NORA Award holds significant importance for researchers like myself, as it shines a spotlight on the vital role research plays in addressing societal challenges and advancing knowledge. More importantly, it highlights the university's commitment to supporting innovative research and providing a platform for academicians to grow and make meaningful contributions.
In expressing his appreciation Dr. Masese said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, whose nomination was pivotal in my achievement. The TAGDev 2.0 implementing University Academic Registrar’s attended a 3-day conference at the Hilton Windhoek in Windhoek, Namibia on “Safeguarding through Institutional Strengthening (Systems Practices and Processes)” as they were on-boarded onto TAGDev 2.0 program. During the sessions the participants were taken through the TAGDev 2.0 workplan which elaborated the expected outcomes and activities which would deliver the programs desired impact and reach. The participants learnt from the TAGDev 1.0 Universities (Egerton University and Gulu University) about the successes, opportunities and challenges faced during the program's implementation.
University of Eldoret was chosen as one of the 12 Universities in Africa that will implement the TAGDev 2.0 program, a collaboration between RUFORUM, 12 African Universities and the Global Confederation for Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA). Its main objective is to strengthen universities and TVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient transformation of agriculture and agrifood systems.

TAGDev 2.0 Capacity Building Workshop for Communications Officers - Windhoek, Namibia
On the sidelines of the 2nd RUFORUM Triennial Conference, the Communications Officers drawn from the 12 (twelve) TAGDev 2.0 implementing Universities in Africa were taken through an induction training on TAGDev 2.0. The intensive 2-day strategic workshop titled “Strengthening the Capacity of University Communications Officers to Serve as Development Communications Professionals” reiterated the key role that the communications officers play in the University and during the implementation of the program as transformational agents ensuring that impactful narratives of the young African men and women are effectively communicated, how the program has transformed their lives, not only financially but empowering them socio-economically as entrepreneurs to become the next generation of job and wealth creators in agriculture.
During the workshop the participants engaged with the TAGDev 2.0 program and the brand voice that best resonated with the goals and aspirations of the program to reflect the transformational impact experienced by the young people, the differently enabled and the refugees while aligning to the University’s goals and vision. The participants were guided through the wholesome content development best practices focusing on the young person, considering inclusivity and diversity and the stakeholders perspectives with emphasis on influencing the narrative of the young Africans being empowered through agricultural education and by extension encourage more young people to engage in agricultural activities. The participating officers got to interact and and learn from the success stories, opportunities and challenges experienced by the TAGDev 1.0 implementing universities, Egerton University and Gulu University.
The participants were from Egerton University (Kenya), Gulu University (Uganda), Uganda Martyrs University (Uganda), Universite Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P, Morocco), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), National University of Agriculture (Benin), University of Port Harcourt (Nigeria), University of Bamenda (Cameron), Malawi University of Science & Technology (Malawi), Africa University (Zimbabwe), University of Free State (South Africa) and University of Eldoret (Kenya). other participating Universities were Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Botswana), Haramaya University (Ethiopia) and Makerere University (Uganda).

Food and nutrition security is a key component to creating food and nutrition sustainability.
Our Ph.D. Candidate from the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology, Henry Tamba Nyuma, talked about his study to various participants at the ongoing RUFORUM conference in Windhoek, Namibia between August 12th - 16th, 2024.
Henry's study aims to 'Assess the Potential of Fortified-Pelletized Agroforestry Organic Amendments for Enhanced Soil Fertility Under Small Holder Agriculture in SSA.'
From his initial findings the advantages of organic pellets are the improvement of soil fertility (soil ecology), recycling of organic resources (circular economy), reduced use of chemical fertilizer (socio-economic), reduction of carbon emission (carbon sequestration) and ease of transportation and storage (socio-economic).
Henry Tamba Nyumba is our postgraduate student from Liberia pursuing his doctorate degree in Soil Science.

University of Eldoret team led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot joined Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) for the 20th Anniversary and the Second RUFORUM Triennial Conference 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia, which officially opened on Monday 12th August 2024.
The conference, under the theme "Operationalizing Higher Agricultural Education and Research Ecosystems for Innovation, Industrialization, and Economic Development in Africa: A Call for Action," has brought together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and promote agricultural education and research in Africa.
The conference aims to transform agriculture in Africa through innovative scientific research, educational and training approaches. University of Eldoret is committed to train the next generation of science leaders, job and wealth creators and entrepreneurs.
The University team members in Namibia are Prof. Julius Ochuodho (UoE Coordinator of RUFORUM program), Dr. Nicholas Rop (Dean, School of Agriculture and Biotechnology), Dr, Ruth Njoroge, Dr. Abigael Otinga, Dr. Javan Were and Ms. Cynthia Chebii (Asst. Registrar-Corporate Affairs and Marketing).
It will be a week of upskilling, networking and creating linkages to the benefit of the University.
