โNow, when we smoke, it make ya cool, ya know? It stimulate your mind and make you sit down and meditate. Instead ya get foolish, ya sit down and then you can meditate and be someone.โ

NASIO FONTAINE: THE FASCINATING STORY OF A REGGAE ARTIST FROM DOMINICA
Discover Nasio Fontaineโs biography in his own words!
The following is an extract of Nasioโs interview that ran in The Beat in the December 2003 issue.
โI was born in Bagatelle/Carte-Bois, a little village on the South-eastern coast of Dominica. The island was named by the Caribs Whittikibuli, that is the original name for the island, until Chris-thief a Crumble-us [Christopher Columbus] came and named it Dominica. I โn I was raised by a Carib mother and an African-descent father who are my mentors, they have grown me into who I โn I am today. They are my best friends. Their strength and love has been with me throughout my life and I love themโ.
โI was brought up in a little old country house, a little one room country shack. I look at myself as old as yesterday and as young as tomorrow. I am the last of seven children โ three sons and four daughters. We went to school from the age of five, but we never had the opportunity to go to so called secondary or high school. So when we were 14 we had to leave school because there was just no other way. Weโd then be farming with our parents so that we could feed the family, yโunderstand?โ
Nasio continued by telling of his musical influences and when he originally got into music.
โWell, anyone from the Village would tell you that I started making noise very young,โ said Nasio. โI would pound on everything. Those milk tins, ya know, milk pans, and my sisters would hide them but Iโd always get them back. I would even get beat at school by teachers because I was always pounding on my desks. Ya see, that vibe was always inside of me, and Iโve always wanted to express it. Iโve always felt like music was the only vehicle that would be available to me. And growing up I never really listened
โThere are two roads. One is life and one is death, and if you live in death, then you must death. And if you live in life, you must live. The way the mouth say, make you live... Look for things marked positive to you, like songs, because all dem things are right.โ
โReggae music is heart music from the people of Jamaica. A music within its own self. Music and family. You cannot separate music and family. You can separate lyrics, but you canโt separate music.โ

BOB MARLEY SAID...
"Most people think
Great God will come from the sky
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your right"
I want to be free
From all misery
To be with you
Is like living
With a beast ๐ถ
