"The Amboseli ecosystem includes Chyulu Hills (pictured), Tsavo West, and Kilimanjaro West in Tanzania. These landscapes are born out of tumultuous volcanic eruptions and happenings, which can often be very harsh and yet to me, Chyulus and their foothills, the rock formations and the view to Kilimanjaro, are the gentlest of landscapes that cradle you in their eternal arms.

This is where I know and feel that Africa is a woman. The ancient name of Africa was Alkebulan. Alkebu-lan “mother of mankind” or “Garden of Eden”. To this day, the land belongs to the Maasai who originate from here. Wildlife roam free, fiercely guarded by Tusk Trust, Big Life Foundation - heroes of the conservation world. I can't imagine it has changed much from the days that Hemingway came here on safari (see vintage photograph of him in a jeep)."

The Deck & Egg Bar at Eden,

"When I build anything, and I've built a lot in my life, I first look at the landscape, which I never want to manipulate. Before the deck and pond were created, there was a massive, naturally created depression in the ground, the bottom of which was solid rock. It was about half an acre big, and I honestly didn't know what to do with it. It was a very hot, tree-less area, so I figured a water feature would work well. And if I had a water feature, a deck would act as a kind of dockside - a place which opened up wide to nature.

I didn't opt for a solid roof, which would have been too dark, so a clear roof was installed with camouflage netting, creating beautiful dappled light. The wooden columns were roughly carved to look like palm trees so that whatever was used in the space would make one feel deeply outdoors and in a cosy extension of the natural surroundings.

The ostrich eggs were an accent idea that just came to me late one night, as many ideas do. I had a lot of eggs leftover; I'd been using these for furniture pieces. I initially wanted to put lights inside the eggs, but the wiring was not straightforward. I then thought it would be amazing if the eggs looked like they were floating, like a swaying curtain, a dance of eggs in the wind." -
