Hyenas or hyaenas are feliform carnivoran mammals belonging to the family Hyaenidae. With just four extant species, it is the fifth-smallest family in the order Carnivora and one of the smallest in the class Mammalia. Despite their low diversity, hyenas are unique and vital components of most African ecosystems.

Spotted hyenas are 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒇𝒕𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔. But these hardy beasts are also skilled hunters that will take down wildebeest or antelope. They also kill and eat birds, lizards, snakes, and insects.

1. Hyenas live in territorial social groups called clans.
2. The spotted hyena is the largest species of hyena.
3. Female hyenas possess similar looking reproductive organs to males therefore accurate sexing can be difficult.
4. The hyena is more closely related to the mongoose and cat than the dog.

They eat the bones which helps prevent the spread of infections from a bacteria called anthrax and deposit concentrations of calcium back into the environment through digestion.
