No other animal is as quintessential African as the giraffe. Their unique silhouettes are as highly recognisable as are their iconic patterns that normally cover their bodies.
However the birth of a spotless giraffe has made headlines around the world.
First of, Kipekee the spotless reticulated giraffe that was recently born in a zoo in Tennessee in the USA and now only weeks afterwards a similar giraffe was discovered in the wild at Mount Etjo Safari Lodge in central Namibia.
While this extraordinary plain brown giraffe has touched so many people around the globe, it has not helped to draw attention to the real issue that giraffe are facing β a silent extinction. And, to make matters even worse for these iconic animals, we now know that there are four distinct species of giraffe in Africa.
Meerkats in the Kalahari have been compared to the gorillas in Rwanda. They are possibly the most endearing creatures in the whole of Africa, and only found in desert regions of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
Can you imagine the privilege of following a family of these comical mammals in a desert? As safari curators itβs an absolute joy to help people discover rhythms of such amazing creatures.

Born in 1919, Ahmed came from the forests of Marsabit and grew to become a truly giant tusker, justifiably known by all as the βKing of Marsabitβ He was and still is the most famous elephant to have roamed the African Continent.
Ahmed was the only individual elephant in history to have been protected by presidential decree. In 1970, the First President of Kenya - Jomo Kenyatta ordered the protection of Ahmed by two armed soldiers at all times. (Slide two)
One morning in 1974, his personal body guards found Ahmed dead, he was not lying on his side but majestically on his tusks, half leaning against a tree.
Today Ahmed of Marsabit can be admired as a mounted exhibit in front of the Kenya National Museum in Nairobi. (Slide three)

Africaβs iconic βTree of lifeβ - πππ πππ πππ
Baobabs symbolize life in a landscape where little else can thrive. Their distinctive silhouettes loom over the acacia scrubland, with Medusa-like branches spreading chaotically above a bulbous body.
With bark and fruit offering over 300 life-sustaining uses, it is the root of many Indigenous remedies, traditions, and folklore. Hence, perfectly nick-named βthe tree of lifeβ
They are the giants of the ages Predating both humankind and the splitting of the continents, this prehistoric species is over 200 million years ago.

Happy people donβt demand a lot from the world because their happiness proceeds from a place deeper than the world can touch.
Here, you see a little boy from the Omo valley from the Dassanech tribe of Ethopia.
A tribe that has been showing off their latest fashion accessories made entirely from old pieces of rubbish such as bottle caps, SIM cards, old watches.
In a time where we struggle to recycle they are repurposing all the rubbish of the βmodernβ world into beautiful accessories.
Hippos can stay beneath the surface of the water for periods of up-to five minutes and are capable of snoozing while submerged, resurfacing to breathe automatically.
However, if they stay out of water in hot weather they are liable to dehydrate and overheat.

We see hope, they see hope.
The word βMaraβ in fact means spotted. The reserve earned this name thanks to the typical landscape of short bushy trees and shrub dotting the huge rolling grassland plains, commonly referred to in Africa as the savannah.
Great location is key for the most amazing memories and experiences when going on a safari.
The Mara Bush camp offers exactly that, it boasts one of the best and most spectacular locations in the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. It is located on the banks of the seasonal Olare Orok River, overlooking a large hippo pool with over 40 hippos at any given time.

A safari experience is about much more than just beautiful lodges and wildlife.
It is also about the people you meet on a safari.
The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best-known local populations internationally due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes and their distinctive customs and dress.
The Maasai have always been special, their bright red robes set them apart visually. Spear in hand they are calm and courageous regardless of the danger.
If you are visiting Africa make sure you enjoy some time with the local Maasai community!

A safari is about many things, the big and the small.
Sometimes when you take a closer look you will notice the relationships that lie in plain view.
One of many is a symbiotic relationship between the oxpecker and the hooved host which is known as mutualism.
The birds have a steady supply of food and the host benefits from the removal of parasites from its body. The tiny oxpecker is tolerated because of this win/win relationship.
Cheetahs are Magical cats. They even stretch with grace and determination. This was a lovely sighting captured by our guests.
